I know that you can get the high fiber vet foods, do you guys think that would help?? or is the canned pumpkin or Metamucil a better option?
CALL the vet about the food - Pumpkin is best in her case; it is safer for her - she has a very high risk for megacolon, if she already doesn't have it, and Metamucil can give too much volume, if it gets stuck and harden, then she is in BIG trouble.

Get some canned pumpkin - just make sure to get it plain.

I'll have to pick up some pumpkin tomorrow and try that then. She's out right now playing, but she still seems to be walking funny, I guess her bums probably still a little sore. I'll give her some more laxative tonight before I go to bed and hopefully that will help keep everything moving.

I keep watching this thread. First thing I did when I got up this morning was come on here, then at work, as soon as I got home - I'm off and on this forum like a yo-yo.

Sending loads of healing to little Alley and strength to you

Hi,

I showed the pic, post to a knowledgable friend of mine and she suspects the kit has the beginnings of a prolapsed rectum, and possibly coccidia.

For what it's worth, I myself had a bit of a prolapsed rectum (well, hemorrhoids didn't help) and things worked out ok. But here's hoping kitten had a good night!

She's doing great today. Still eating and pooing.
I was talking to a different vet on the phone today for like half an hour, and she agrees with what I think (a parineal hernia). She also said if this is the case, she would need to go all the way to PEI (6 hours drive) to have surgery.
She agreed to continue the laxative once a day to keep the stools moving, and do not give her any extra fiber (just until we figure out what it is)

What I think I'm going to do is contact the PEI vet hospital and see if they would like to take her on as a 'teaching case'. This type of hernia repair would be a special type of surgery and I'm thinking that they might like to use her as a subject. There is no way i can afford a surgery like this, so I'm hoping they will help.

Its worth a try. What do you guys think about this??

I think it is a very good idea. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I think I'll write them an e-mail tonight and see what they say. If that doesn't work then I'm going to try fundraising and see if I can get the money together to bring her up there.

So, I was about to send a small donation to your vet (Dr Jeff Goodhall). Should I wait and see if you would need the donation in the name of PEI instead? It's nothing, really, but if we all pitch in a give a bit of money it would cover part of the surgery for the hernia (if that's what it is). Just tell me where to send the donation (and advise them checks might be coming with "for Alley" written in the memo part of the check!) and I will post it today.
Thanks for everything you are doing.

Yes, I guess it would be best to hold off until I find out if they will take her. I'm going to e-mail them later tonight so hopefully I will here back soon.
I will definately keep you guys posted!!
BTW- Her crate is an absolute mess!! hehe, she had so much fun tearing it apart today- definately feeling better!!

I would back up your e-mail with a snail-mail letter - maybe you could get your vet to have a word with them too?

Really hope this little one pulls through and she can be helped.

Great idea - and, nothing ventured, nothing gained. sounds like your vet would be willing to give you any supporting documentation you might need for the specialist. Let's hope the little girl keeps tearing up her crate - nothing better to see than an energetic kitten!

I think this vet would definately help me out if I asked. She seems like she really wants Alley to get better.

I just sent off the e-mail, so hopefully I recieve a response in the next few days. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope they accept her.

O gosh, I hope they can do something for her. I would also be willing to send a contribution for her.

Keep the vibes coming and fingers crossed, and maybe a prayer that she will end up a healthy, big, loving cat.
