I would not have them test for FIP. They can't actually test for FIP...they test for coronavirus, which, since these little guys are not from a breeder (if I recall correctly, their rescues, right), there is a good chance they would test positive for Coronavirus. That does not mean that they have FIP....but trust me, if a vet gets it in their head that your cat has FIP....good luck convincing them otherwise. After Zoey, I will never again test a cat for coronavirus unless it is an absolute last resort. She got the "diagnosis" from the first vet, and vets 2, 3, and 4 followed suit, regardless of what her test results were. Since FIP is ultimately fatal, any treatment she received from that point on was "palative" - which was really frustrating to deal with since I still do not think she had FIP.Originally Posted by Snake_Lady
Quick update, with some questions.
- ask to test for FelV, FIP ( his first vaccine was a 3 in 1 for Panleukopenia, rhino, calicivirus....hmmm.
It's the correct one - it's actually FRVCP, which sounds like 5-in-one, but it's just 3 things: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR), calcivirus, and panleukopenia.Originally Posted by Snake_Lady

Kizzy was 6mos for first shot) so we should have no false positives if I understand correctly (from the current posts on the in office testing...I assume we have the same tests here in Canada).
That's a good point. When Smudge was a little baby and not doing so well, I made up a mush containing Gerber baby food, tinned kitten food, Pedialyte, KMR and a cat specific high calorie supplement that I got from the pet store. I figured the mush was high calorie, high fluid, and was fairly nutritious. She gained weight well on it and I credit a lot of her turn around to the mush.Originally Posted by zoeysmom
The vet was also able to give me a nutritional supplement to get some extra calories into her and make sure she got some extra nutrients/minerals. It was a bacon-flavoured liquid.

will let you know when I get back... I'll be leaving in 35mins or so.Originally Posted by CoolCat

My mistake, I meant the combo test, FelV, FIV......not FIP.....too many things in my head at the moment. Thanks for the info, and explanation.Originally Posted by zoeysmom

CBC is the full blood panel, yes? What does serology show?IF you are going to draw blood, I would try getting a CBC and serology done, as well as maybe a FelV/FIV test.
thanks, I will definately ask about the supplements along with a high cal food.OH! Popsicle sticks worked really well for me when I was force-feeding Zoey. I used Hills A/D, warmed it up a bit, and put small portions against the roof of her mouth (scraping with back of top teeth). I ended up with a huge portion of it on me at first, but she eventually got the hang of it and realized she was going to eat whether she liked it or not!

I stand corrected. That is what a vet tech told me when she taught me how to give pills to Gray One.
