@sneakyblonde...when you said i could check her temperature and see if she feels colder without a thermometer did you mean feel if her tummy is cooler or warmer or her head??

What all is going on with your furr baby?
Sounds like you are all ready same as me! Off topic, saw about your windows. Mine are like that too. I found kits at Wal-Mart in the winterizing area. It is a kit with plastic that goes over the windows. You use a hair-dryer to adhere it to the windows I got some to try and it is so much warmer in my house that I haven't had to use my little heaters. And it has been COLD out here too. They are inexpensive kits, easy to apply and work great!

I didn't know storms trigger labor either. Supposed to be cold, rainy day here tomorrow fingers crossed toes too!!

My furr baby is moody one minute and all lovey dovey the next. She went from wanting her belly rubbed to do not touch me, do not even think about touching me!! Mama cat (That is her name as she has always "mothered" the other cats) the past few days had been practically forcing my younger cat to nurse off of her. (Milk came in a few days back.) Earlier today she went from trying to get the other cat to nurse over to refusing to let my other cat near her. Right now, she is keeping my younger cat close to her.

She still has discharge off and on. And I think she is having contractions, just not active labor contractions.

Talked to my vet today, they said this is normal it can take a few days. My vet actually called it the first stage of cat labor. I am new to having newborn kittens and like you I am sooooo VERY excited and can't wait for them to get here! Do you know how many kittens your cat is having?

I always use a digital thermometer and take the cat temperature under the arm. I just add a degree to it. That is how my vet suggested to take a cat temperature. I checked Mama cat's temp last night and it was 99 when you add the degree under the arm.

Yea thanks a ton @sneakyblonde  you really have helped a lot and i hope you get to feeling better. Sounds like you are the one that needs to get some sleep lol. And the vet said that the are pretty crammed but he estimated between 4 to possibly 6. I'm hoping only 4 so she doesn't have to endure too much pain :( I am going to look for a kit at Walmart tmrw. I hope my walmart has some because i desperately need a few haha. @Lovelife  let me know when those precious kitties arrive! and obviously no kittens on my end....yet :) Hopefully by either tomorrow night or sunday...i hope it doesn't take that long though. I wish you all luck in helping your little fur babies bring their little fuzzy angels into the world! GOOD LUCK!!!!

HI,

actually THE ears ARE A GOOD PLACE TO START. (LIKE  RABBITS, CAT'S EARS DISAPATE  BODY HEAT.

BUT ANY WHERE SHE WILL LET YOU TOUCH HER, RIGHT NOW.  YOU SAID SHE IS TOUCHY ABOUT HER BELLY.- SO LEAVE IT ALONE!

(Sorry cap lock was on.)

Just try to be near with out invading her space.  If she stays stressed - LABOR CAN TAKE LONGER. I know you mean well, but she has a lot of WORK AHEAD!  AND LEAVE HER CHOICE OF NESTING BOX ALONE - OR SHE WILL FIND A PLACE YOU PROBABLY WON'T LIKE.

With Ashes, I can put my hand on him - and I guess it is like a "Length of time"  thing"?   I know about how long it takes from room air on his fur, to until the 101 - 102 DEGREES " WARMTH"', comes through his fur from his skin.  Does that  make any sense at all?  Cats are "warm and furry", and if I put my hand on a cat - I expect to feel their warmer temperature in a pretty quick time.

( Helpful hint: Also, IF you ever need to get a cat's temperature DOWN with a fever, USE a damp  cloth with  some isopropol alcohol on it and "wipe" their tummy and "arm pits" and let it evaporate.  And repeat every 15 - 30 minutes until lowered.)

I can't do the math right now...   Cat's normally is about 102  and  a " low temp for a mom"  would be - 100.5.?

Sorry, I am not even making sense to ME anymore.

It is ONLY about a 2 - 2 1/2 degree drop. ( Sort of like when a woman ovulates, not much of a change, but enough to know if you are ovulating or period is ready to start.) I believe it is approx.  102. dropping to about 100. I can feel my cats back or head, like you would a baby's and tell if "they are burning with fever" - or running a "sub-normal temp."  because they feel a bit  too cool. Is she looking to get under the covers, or cuddle close for body heat from you.  Is she all "fluffed up" like a cold cat?  Or sprawled out, belly or side up - to lose body heat?  Or lays where the heating system blows?

If you were to take her temp - it would drop about 2 - 2.5 degrees.  but it is enough that the cat can tell.

I hope this answered your question well enough.

It is about 1:30 am and Ashes and I are going to bed. I am shot, and Ashes NEEDS some LOVE and cuddle time before I pass out from exhaustion.!

We will be back on here tomorrow afternoon.  I have some things to do in the morning - if I wake up be for noon!

(Crap!! Ashes just JUMPED MY ARM!! Have to go find gauze and tape, etc.  I take prednisone AND blood thinners.  So, I have to go fix this.  I don't think he will EVER STOP!!!)

Later,

Cindy

I am so happy I can help.  I am sure there are some that do not post and just "listen", and that is okay too. I guess when they have something to say, they will jump in.

Right now, I have to go fix my arm.  Ashes just ripped my with 4 - three corner tears!  I doubt he will ever stop that!!

And yep. Probably already tried that (What ever anyone is about to suggest).

Rejection, Squirt Bottle, Time outs and more.

I was gone all day and on the computer doing Medical Research last night on here.

In 5 minutes he is BACK and humble and apologetic, IF  A cat can be apologetic.

Maybe tomorrow will be a better day for both of us!

Good night all,

Cindy

P.S. Ashes is NOT a Bad CAT. He was abused and malnourished. I almost lost him several times as a kitten.  His VISION has improved with good food and some vitamins

I don't know what else he suffered besides   having   ALL    his whiskers cut off, just when he was starting to explore his world at about 6 weeks.

You can get those window kits at hardware stores, too. It's a film that covers the window. If you have a lot of windows, you may need more than one kit. They really work.

Yea i have around 11 to 14 windows down stairs so i would need quite a few kits. Probably not just yet because she actually chose another nesting spot other than my bed and she has been there all day since she woke up this morning. I woke up and started freaking out because i thought she had gotten out of my room and went and had them in my food pantry downstairs in the cold so naturally i jumped up and went to looking all over down there just to find that she is in the room right next to my room (my daughters room) hiding in her nesting spot in there. I'll upload a pic of the spot she has chosen lol. Also she is acting weird today...she was in her spot and she is usually constantly wanting attention like i mentioned before and this time when i went to pet her just on the head she jerked away from and wouldn't let me touch her. Kind of hurtful but i completely understand that she needs her space so she can be comfortable and that she can do this on her own. Of course I'll still watch over her by checking in and making sure she doesn't have any problems or doesn't need any help. Sooo excited to see these babies!!!

Hi,

NO BABIES YET??!!

BEFORE I CONTINUE, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING NOTE:

FOR INFO:  StefanZ. (An Advisor), Commented that he DID NOT LIKE  "The Isopropyl  Alcohol on a damp cloth" , I suggested for quickly bringing down a high fever in Kittens & Cats. Since I don't know his background or education level - Don't use the Alcohol!

I was told by MY trusted Vet to use that formula. ( IF I have the choice between That and a brain injured animal, I am going with the alcohol.)

All of you need to make your own choices, based on what YOUR TRUSTED VET suggests!  Or THE SITE ADVISOR.

Cindy

Back to BABIES! Tiny Kitties!  My favorite!

The fact she seems to have chosen a  'NEST" - FINALLY!  Is a very good sign!

Animals are like humans, and visa versa.

Some take their time in a "slow labor process", over days (or even weeks)!  They clean house, knit some booties and finally seem to decide it is time to have the baby.

And others are more like,  "I think I  might feel a Labor Pain?"...   And in 10 minutes, there is a new baby in the front seat of the family car!!!

A friend of mine had her son in the hospital hallway. They had just had a delivery and needed to clean the delivery room for her. And told HER to please wait... She gave one small "grunt" and there he was!

(Or between your matching recliners, like my cat Cuddles almost did!  She was either a Diva and wanted an audience and applause, or was scared by what was happening to her and wanted company and comfort from us.)

My Vet said it also can depend on the number and size of the babies and how long it takes for the babies to move in to the birth canal, etc. A lot of that can depend on how relaxed the Mom is about the whole process.

So, Mom cat has picked the place, but has she finished knitting the booties, yet?

I think you are wise to leave her alone and quiet now, and only offer what support she seems to want or need from you.  Note, after YOU were asleep - she found a "NEST" she liked and did not seem to appreciate you disturbing her.  You will know if she is in distress or not.

Please note - She moved away from the food and cat box, as they can bring possible predators to harm her babies.

At least she did not get out, or hide somewhere - like in a wall or attic.

I think it is neat - she picked your daughter's room. (Maybe you could write your daughter a "Short story" about all of this that she can read when she is older. Maybe Mom cat knows how much care she gets and thought that was a "Great place" to have her babies, too.

I am off to bed very soon.  (Today was pretty rough - My friend's first day of Chemo., the radiation will be scheduled....)

Hi,

Thank you for all your kind words.  I seem to have "been in the right place at the right time".

It is not so much the info anyone might have,  as it is "Moral Support", at that hour of the morning.  No one likes to think they are "alone in the world" , with a possible problem...

It is nice to have someone, anyone - to share the "panic" with, if there is any.  A calm voice can help a lot.  Right?

You can feel free to ask me,  if you ever have any questions I might be able to answer for you..  I am not an expert, but I have a lot of "hands on", personal efforts to save animals and people.

As for the pelvic bones...  Well, I was told ONE broken one would keep me on a walker for maybe a year.  BUT FOUR BROKEN BONES?  My doc would not even guess.

But then, I  had WALKED into his office that way.  ( I did not go to the E.R. after I fell...  When he asked my, " WHY NOT"?  I told him, "They can't cast my ass, Doc!"  He fell over, howling with laughter and agreed, no they can't.  I already had ice, pain meds, etc. at home, and I did not want the "Flu" from all those sick people,  to just get  X-rays.  That is ALL they would have done for me.  I would have been there 6-8 hours and I could have had a "sprain".)

I am pretty tough. The worst is over, but the storms really make me hurt.  It is an EL NINO year and I just have to plan ahead. I am well stocked on the things my cat and I need.  I make sure I have clean clothes, a big pot of chili, "unstuffed" bell peppers, or home made soup I can just Nuke, and be prepared to do as little as possible for several days at a time.

(I have a rare, fatal disease - so 4 broken bones is pretty insignificant, compared to that.  I just, "deal with it" , as the saying goes.

Thanks again for your kind words and concern,

Cindy

Not the alcohol, but THAT alcohol.  isopropanol  on the outside, is useful, sure.  But take inside is poisonous.  And as cats usually cant read, and may immediately lick off that wetness, its not healthy to them.  Google on isopropanol (whatever spelling) and look for yourself.  Most  places are giving strong warnings.

So, either find some etanol-alcohol to put a few drops etc...   OR if you use the propanol- alcohol, be near so you are sure the cat cant lick off this.

The alcohol does quickly disappear into the air - that is why its useful as cooling device, and is often part of "put on the skin-alcohols" so you dont need to watch very long.  But dont risk the cat gets propanol alcohol nor other alcohols inside, other than the human grade ethanol.

Ethanol alcohol isnt exactly healthy for them either, but as for example Dr Bachs drops (Rescue Remedy) are  in a brandy-solution, so apparently some few drops suitably solved in their drinking water, or put on their soles, isnt that dangerous.

ps.   if the cat has such a high fever there are risks for brain damages, its a VERY high tem.  A cat with THAT high temp wont be able to lick off anything. It will jsut lay there and breathe.  So yeah, in SUCH emergency, use any cooling device you do happen to have at home, even if it contains propanol-alcohol...   :)

Hey sorry I haven't been on here in a few days everyone! But sadly no kitties yet. I have no clue as to when she will have them but it will been sooner or late (probably later). It is like one minute she is showing sooo many signs of impending labor and the next she is totally normal. I'm so lost but i figured the best thing i can do as of now is just relax, sit back, and just wait. She is killing me with this whole waiting game thing but there is honestly nothing i can do to change it lol. She is still being very clingy and she is starting to sleep in her nesting spot almost every night now and stays in there for a good while during the day. Her temp. also went down to 98 when i checked her earlier so i hope labor comes soon at least. She likes her spot that she has chosen a lot haha so i will leave her be. I'm going to run in there and check on her right fast and ill be right back. If anyone has any questions regarding Brigitte then feel free to ask. Thanks everyone for all of the help!!

Just a reminder to all -

Caring for ones companion animals is a very serious responsibility, and often, in light of that concern, members will create threads seeking information from other members. While we allow and encourage expression of opinions and the recounting of personal experiences, it is the forum's official position that no online advice can ever supercede or replace the care and advice of trained medical professionals who have first hand knowledge of the individual animal's condition. Your vet always knows best.
