In addition to insulation, you may want to check into whether or not your windows are allowing air in. We have an older house and it needs new windows badly. This is something we are hoping to have done in the next few months. Carpeting also helps with keeping the home warm... You can purchase throw rugs to use if you don't want to put carpet down. In the winter we keep our thermostat set to about 69 or 70. In the summer, its up to 75 or 76, not by choice though. With our window problems, our AC can't get the house down to 72 (my ideal temp in summer). Our electric bill runs almost $400 in summer for that reason. In the winter, our has been down to about $200 because it doesn't get that cold here, so the heat doesn't have to run much.
