Good heavens.  I had Hekitty done for $130, but that was a few years back...oh, all right, NINE years back!  Hard to believe my baby is coming up on her 10th birthday!  The girls will be much happier without those pesky ovaries.  But you know this, being the responsible, caring cat-guardian that you are!
Well I called our old clinic and they'll do it for 160 each plus a 48 dollar exam since they've never seen the kits. Kitten and Mook were spayed there. It seems the VCA hospitals have been purchased by Mars who own Banfields. That makes me wonder about their future. We figured 300 each at the VCA so I wasn't too put off with the 350 quote. When they added the requirement of 160 dollar blood tests each my mental calculator fritzed. You want some extra in the pot in case there are complications.

Tell me about it.  My vet is very reasonable, but still...I'm thinking about talking with them and see if I could pre-pay a set amount each month for future bills, shots and the like.  Worth asking, at any rate.  There isn't another vet here in town that I would take her to.  There is one really good vet in the next little town over, but without transportation, he might as well be on the moon.   It's getting to the point that responsible pet ownership is a hard thing for seniors, who really need the company of their pets.  SIGH...

I'm tickled that you are able to handle it, although I know it is a hit.  You take such exemplary care of your furbies.  They couldn't have asked for a better, more caring home!

I think we take the best care of them we can.  I wouldn't take them to the other clinic if I had any doubt about their reputation.  Let me know if you need a bit of help with Hekitty's shots and chip.

Thank you so much, and I will!  It is a huge comfort to have friends like you.  My hope is that with the little extra I'll have on my power bill since qualifying for LIEAP this year will allow me to cover it, but if not, I promise I'll let you know!

How goeth the clowder of clowns?  And the ever-so-dignified Ms. Mook, as well!

I question my sanity at times. They kits work as a unit and we sit and watch in horror as they assist each other through complicated moves to obtain the desired target.  Toad is throwing her food dish in the cage up side down for the past two nights. It may be protest to being caged. Just like when they protested being in the nursery it's time to start letting them stay out at night or much later.

Mercy was trying to sleep and the baby was trying to help her.

I'm big on spending my dollars where they count. Again Yes I was shopping for a better price but it's not like I went in the phone book or a dark alley and started to call everyone. We called a clinic we had used for years. I had a real backside of a vet tech there one day and felt the vet should have sent her out of the exam room. If they had quoted close what the VCA charges I would take them to the VCA. You can't buy peace of mind. If you get your kittens from a rescue more than likely they'll be fixed already or you'll get a voucher. We've done this all out of pocket so the real time costs have always been there. Honestly I have nothing but insane respect for rescues that absorb these costs though donations and often their own pockets on a daily basis year after year.
i'm not sure where you live, but have you tried doing an internet search for spay/neuter assistance programs in your area (area in which you're comfortable traveling)? i understand that going to a spay/neuter clinic might very well not be comfortable for you. i'm thinking about assistance programs which allow you to choose a participating vet, and that possibly the VCA or the vet who spayed your Kitten and Mook might participate in such a program. my impression is that the vet's don't usually tell their clients if they participate in such programs.

Not only seniors -- people of any age!  Prices go up but not what we get.

I have that option but I don't know either of the vets on the program that isn't income based. As I said I knew the VCA would be expensive and didn't really balk until even more was added onto the 350 each. I know the vets at Canyon Crossroads and their reputation. otherwise I would probably just bite the bullet and use the VCA. Also I consider it wrong to use a resource to get for free what we are capable of paying for. Also the vet the killed Kitten is on the list for one of the foundations which to me says they don't screen their vets thoroughly most a vet like her would see this as a way to get extra income. Even the county AC here made an interesting comment about her when we had to have the four newborns PTS from Tera's litter.

VCA is outrageously expensive out here, so I won't use them although I have in the past.

They are expensive but using them on a regular basis I have been given many price cuts. Also since there were two kits they were fine with doing just one fecal. Its also this particular VCA as they have an awesome staff. Mercy had some special needs with her dental. My vet at the VCA got a colleague in a specialist clinic to look at the pictures and determine what it was. For free. Also all of their pre estimates were spot on. There's pros and cons. In this case I think paying what would probably be 1200 for two spays isn't necessary or negligent of us to find someone we have used to do it for considerably less.

I seen the kits playing out of the corner of my eye and thought it looked really cool.

Sounds like they, or Toad, at least, might be ready for a bit more freedom.   They are just progressing by (literally) leaps and bounds!

41/2 months and 6lbs. I think the food tipping was them wrestling and it was simply collateral damage. I ended up crating them at 2AM last night until 6 this morning. Hard to believe the first time I put them in this cage I was bopping their heads on the openings to make sure they couldn't get their heads stuck

Oh good.  That will be done.  And I'm not surprised that they are good.  They were reared right.  Although that isn't always an indication...When H. Renee goes to the vet, you'd think she was raised by wolves, and they are SO sweet with her!  She just does NOT brook strangers trifling with her royal self.

What a precious picture!!!

I haven't had to spay for quite awhile so don't know what it runs -- and of course it varies widely depending on location.  It sure has gone up a lot (like everything else, right?) and that's concerning to me, because spay/neuter should be kept very affordable, for all the obvious reasons.  $160 each is still high, but at least better than exorbitant $1100!
The vet I go to neuters for $40 and spays for $60, I believe. It's too bad the meatballs' spay will cost so much.

Back from the vet with Mercy. All her 3 year shots.  My poor little flower just wilted on the exam table and said not a peep. She got a new collar and bell last night. shinny pink and Hello Kitty bell.
