That is a great cover (and I usually hate covers of songs I love). The original is very, very good and can make me cry, too.

Other songs that tear me up are "Release" and "Psychopomp," both by the Tea Party. I miss the Tea Party.

I have to leave the room when that song plays, otherwise I will make a blubbering, sobbing fool out of myself. I had to have it banned at my wedding.
My daddy is gone too.

There is an Irish Folk song called Kilkelly Ireland that makes me sob every time I hear it.

I honestly cannot think of a song actually I've shed tears to, although "When The Tigers Broke Free" by Pink Floyd chokes me up.

The only song that has ever made me cry is an oldie but a goodie. ITs Last Kiss by J. Frank Wilson. Pearl Jam did a cover of it a few years back. That version gets me to. I wanted to post the lyrics co you guys would know which song. It just makes me think on my DH and how sad life could be. Just reading it has got me going now.

J. Frank Wilson Lyrics

Last Kiss Lyrics

[Chorus]
Oh where oh where can my baby be
The Lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world

We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road straight up ahead
A car was stalled the engine was dead
I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screaming tires the busting glass
The painful scream that I heard last

[Chorus]

When I woke up the rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Something warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while
I held her close I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love that I knew i have missed
Well now she's gone even though I hold her tight
I lost my love my life that night

[Chorus]

What a great idea, posting the lyrics...thanks for doing that.

I will do the same because I know that many of y'all might not be familiar with Dishwalla's music (if you are, please let me know...I'd love to talk to you!) Anyway, here are the lyrics to Every Little Thing...this song makes me feel like the writer/singer,JR Richards, sat down with me and asked me how I was doing...and afterwards, he wrote down these words...

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Dishwalla Lyrics

Every Little Thing

Let me in
to see you in the morning light
to get me on and all along the tears they come
see all come
I want you to believe in life
but I get the strangest feeling that you've gone away
will you find out who you are too late to change?
I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
some times

lift me up
just lift me up don't make a sound
and let me hold you up before you hit the Ground
see all come
you say your all right
but I get the strangest feeling
that you've gone away- you've gone away
and will you find out who you are too late to change?

I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
some times

Don't give me up
don't give me up tonight
or soon nothing will be right at all
salvation
will you find out who you are too late to change?

I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted

Cattybird -- When I was four years old, my parents bought the Peter, Paul, & Mary record of "Puff The Magic Dragon" for me, and I loved it for a few days... and then I started to get it. On some little-kid level, I understood what a sad song it was, about growing up, and it just broke my heart. When I cried and asked my parents not to play it anymore, they wanted to know why it upset me, and I couldn't put it into words. I finally explained it to them when I was 45.

Still can't listen to that song, either!

Ryn -- You're so right about Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt." Not just his rendition, but also his adjustment to the words. He had such a gift.

Here's the song that has been on my mind for a few years now, as it continues to reveal more and more of itself to me... it relates to so much that's happening now, in my life and in the world.

The Cool, Cool River
Paul Simon

Moves like a fist through the traffic
Anger and no one can heal it
Shoves a little bump into the momentum
It's just a little lump
But you feel it
In the creases and the shadows
With a rattling deep emotion
The cool, cool river
Sweeps the wild, white ocean

Yes Boss. The government handshake
Yes Boss. The crusher of language
Yes Boss. Mr. Stillwater,
The face at the edge of the banquet
The cool, the cool river
The cool, the cool river

I believe in the future
I may live in my car
My radio tuned to
The voice of a star
Song dogs barking at the break of dawn
Lightning pushes the edge of a thunderstorm
And these old hopes and fears
Still at my side

Anger and no one can heal it
Slides through the metal detector
Lives like a mole in a motel
A slide in a slide projector
The cool, cool river
Sweeps the wild, white ocean
The rage of love turns inward
To prayers of devotion
And these prayers are
The constant road across the wilderness
These prayers are
These prayers are the memory of God
The memory of God

And I believe in the future
We shall suffer no more
Maybe not in my lifetime
But in yours I feel sure
Song dogs barking at the break of dawn
Lightning pushes the edges of a thunderstorm
And these streets
Quiet as a sleeping army
Send their battered dreams to heaven, to heaven
For the mother's restless son
Who is a witness to, who is a warrior
Who denies his urge to break and run

Who says: Hard times?
I'm used to them
The speeding planet burns
I'm used to that
My life's so common it disappears
And sometimes even music
Cannot substitute for tears

YESSS! Thats it, thank you! For some reason his name just wouldnt come to me!!

I also forgot Diamond Rio has a few that will make me cry.
They are: Believe and One more day...those are some tear jerkers!

Ok I wanna post the lyrics since maybe some of you arent familar with a few of these songs.

This one my brother picked out for my dads funeral

"Thats my job"

I woke up cryin' late at night - when I was very young
I had dreamed my father - had passed away and gone
My world revolved around him - I couldn't lie there anymore
So I made my way down the mirrowed hall and tapped upon his door.

And I said, "Daddy, I'm so afraid!
How would I go on, with you gone that way?
Don't wanna cry anymore
So may I stay with you?"

And he said,
"That's my job, that's what I do
Everything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me ...
That's my job, you see."

Later we barely got along - this teenage boy and he
Most of the fights it seems - were over different dreams
We each held for me ...
He wanted knowledge and learning - I wanted to fly out west
"Said I could make it out there - if I just had the fare
I got half, will you loan me the rest?"

And I said, "Daddy, I'm so afraid
Theres no guarentee in the plans I've made
And if I should fail, who will pay my way back home?"

And he said,
"That's my job, that's what I do
Ev'rything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me ...
That's my job, you see."

Every person carves his spot - and fills the hole with life
And I pray someday I might - light as bright as he.

Woke up early one bright fall day - read the tragic news
After all my travels, I settled down - within a mile or two
I make my livin' with words and rhymes - and all the tragedies
Should go into my head and out instead - as bits of poetry.

But I say, "Daddy I'm so afraid
How will I go on - with you gone this way
How can I come up - with a song to say, "I love you."

"That's my job, that's what I do
Ev'rything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me ...
That's my job, you see."

"Ev'rything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me."

I've never heard Hurt before so I googled it yesterday but only found the lyrics...which are so painful...I'd love to hear it by Johnny Cash but can't find it. Any ideas where I can hear it?...(please keep in mind that I'm computer challenged
)

Since you mentioned Paul Simon, I'd have to add to my list 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' by Simon & Garfunkel...

"Don't Take the Girl" - Tim Mcgraw, "Remember When" - Alan Jackson "My Immortal" - Evanescence "Sara" - Rascal Flatts "What hurts the most" - Rascal Flatts! I just realized country songs make me cry! I like country but it's not my top favorite genre (now I know why lol j/k)! If I think of more I will add! Oh and "Wind Beneath My Wings" -Bette (Love her) such a funeral song! Hurt by Johnny Cash is a good song!

I saw Dishwalla appear on Charmed, and haven't yet gotten around to actually looking for their music, but I liked what I heard.

Okay, since we're posting the lyrics, I know probably no one has heard of the one I put in there... it's about an Irish family.. whose son goes to America to find work (and ..ends up working on the railroad, I believe). There was a series of letters found in an attic, and the person wrote this song based on the story told by the letters from the father. :
: I can usually make it through the first couple of verses before I start crying...but I'm always crying by the end.

Kilkelly Ireland, eighteen and sixty, my dear and lovin' son John
Your good friend the Schoolmaster Pat McNamara, so good as to write these words down.
Your brothers have all gone to find work in England, the house is so empty and sad,
The crop of potatoes is sorely affected, a third to a half of them bad.
And your sister Bridget and Patrick O'Donnell, are goin' to be married in June,
Your mother says not to work on the railroad, and be sure to come on home soon.

Kilkelly Ireland, eighteen and seventy, my dear and lovin' son John
Hello to your missus and to your four children, that they may grow healthy and strong
Michael has got in a wee bit of trouble, I suppose he never will learn
Because of the dampness there's no turf to speak of and now we have nothing to burn.
And Bridget is happy you named the child for her, although she's got six of her own
You say you've found work, but you don't say what kind, or when you'll be comin' home.

Kilkelly Ireland, eighteen and eighty, dear Michael and John my sons
I'm sorry to give you the very sad news that your dear old mother has gone.
We buried her down at the church in Kilkelly, your brothers and Bridget were there,
You don't have to worry, she died very quickly, remember her in your prayers.
And it's so good to hear that Michael's returning with money he's sure to buy land
For the crop has been poor and the people are selling, for any price that they can.

Kilkelly Ireland, eighteen and ninety, my dear and lovin' son John
I suppose that I must be close on eighty, it's thirty years since you've gone
Because of all of the money you sent me, I'm still living' out of my own
Michael has built himself a fine house, and Bridget's daughters have grown
And thank you for sendin' your family picture, they're lovely young women and men
You say you might even come for a visit, what a joy to see you again.

Kilkelly Ireland, eighteen and ninety two, my dear brother John,
I'm sorry I didn't write sooner, to tell you that father has gone.
He was living with Brigid, she said he was cheerful and healthy right down to the end
And you should have seen him play with the grandchildren, of Pat McNamara your friend.
And we buried him alongside of mother, down at Kilkelly churchyard
He was a strong and a feisty old man, considering that life is so hard.
And it's funny the way he kept talkin' about you, he called for you at the end
And why don't you think about comin' to visit, we'd all love to see you again.
