He should be at least 12 lbs, if not closer to 14 lbs.  He's still a rack of bones, hence I was hoping for more weight gain.  I'm inexperienced in trying to put weight on cats.

Julie tries to play with his tail when he's not looking, then hisses at him even when he doesn't move.  Told ya'll she was crazy!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! :heart2:

Do you have access to Kerry Butter there? (Sold in supermarkets here). You it's butter from grass-fed, pastured cows. Some extra fat in his diet would help. You can give him a dab of unsalted Kerry butter on his food. Or pull off some of the fat from the thighs when you make the food for them and freeze it in little bits - that should thaw quickly, and you can just add some extra fat to his meals.

As you know, cats do great with fat, and it has almost twice the calories of protein. Obviously he needs the protein! But he's getting that. :)

Butter!!!  I think I have seen that butter in the butter aisles!  And you know what, I didn't even think about it, but the chicken thighs recipe is only 25% skins else my others will balloon out.  I didn't even THINK about adding more fat since I feed the pork and chuck (beef).  But fat would definitely help.  I can also get regular unsalted butter if I can't get the Kerry brand, but I'm pretty sure I can get that brand.  He doesn't like chewing gizzards, so I wonder how he'll take to skin?  Or I could grind just skin and freeze in little bits to add to his food.  It's going to be a while until I make chicken thighs, but I can still add butter if he'll eat it.  How much should I add?

The vet is thrilled that he's getting so much protein, and I'm letting him have all he wants at meals.  He just doesn't eat much more than a regular serving.

Awww, sounds like  he is doing great!  I think him getting in the cat tree is good progress.
I got a cat tree for Angel a few months ago, & he loves scratching on it, but has JUST started getting up on the platforms a couple of weeks ago!  ........took him long enough.

I don't know how many calories butter has off-hand. But assuming he's eating - or should be eating - something on the order of 180 calories a day, I'd consider adding 20 to even 40 calories of butter. If he likes it.

And the skin will have more nutrients than butter, I'd think. Sounds like you'll need to chop it up or grind it. ;)

Love seeing him in the cat tree and making himself right at home! I agree that an improvement is an improvement.
The weight gain might take a little time. Glad to hear he's doing well overall.

Sending lots of vibes for that eye.

He's still eating his raw very well, and I'm going to try butter very soon.  I have some plain unsalted butter, I'll try a small pat tonight.  Fats are 9 cals per gram whereas protein and carbs are 4 cals per gram, so we can get a bit of an idea from there, right?  I use the max amount of fish oil listed on Dr. P's recipe.

Grinding chicken skin only will not be a problem.  When I make chicken thighs, I open all the packages into a scrubbed and well-rinsed sink and rip all the skins off.  Then I grind only 25% of the skins first to "grease" the grinder so to speak.  So after I grind up the 25% skin I can grind up the rest of the skin and save it in baggies and freeze.

He stretches upward and looks in the bowls of the tree like he wants to get in them, but he's still wobbly/weak and can't quite make it yet.  He's gained a lot of strength since I've had him, he plays with toys, bunny kicks them, scratches the scratchers, and runs and chirps a bit now, but he still needs a lot of weight/muscle to climb the cat tree.  He wobbles when he makes biscuits on a blanket, poor fella.  Gadget and Mason both try to love on him, but he's just not ready for that yet.  Julie still hisses but thankfully she keeps a distance instead of swatting.

Thanks Stewball, he really is a sweet boy.

He did not like the butter in his food, I tried a teaspoon and then a half teaspoon and he walked away from his plate each time.  Maybe the skins would be better?

At this international market a few towns over from me, they sell just pork fat in a quart-sized white container. I'm not sure if something like that would work (if you could find it)?

Have you tried coconut oil? It might work instead of the butter. I let my cat lick it off of my hand instead of mixing it into his food.

I'll give the coconut oil and animal fats a try.  He loves pork, so that would ideal...if I can find some that isn't salted.

Awwww, he looks so cute in the cat tree! I love reading about how he is progressing and integrating right into your family. Sounds like the perfect new sibling. :)

I second (third? fourth?) the suggestion for pork fat, otherwise known as "lard" or "manteca". You might be able to find this at your grocery store.

No go on the coconut oil.  Actually, when I opened the door that separates them for meal time, Mason and Gadget ran in to finish his food and THEY avoided the coconut oil too.  I have weird cats.

I looked at the pork fat where you find ham hocks and such, and as I thought it everything is salt cured, smoked, etc.  But I didn't even think of lard!  I bet I can find lard.  The next food that I'm about to run out of is beef, which is fatty chuck roast.  He likes it and I've got several roasts.  I also need to look at the higher fat options at Hare Today and put in an order.

He still seems to be gaining, just slowly.  OH!  He finally had enough energy to jump up into "bowl" just above and to the side of the house he was in.  He's also jumping up onto the couch from the back of the couch (the highest part).  So he's definitely gaining some muscle/strength.  His eye appointment is 9-11, so all warm thoughts are appreciated.

According to the eye specialist's office, any blood work, x-rays, etc are to be performed by my regular vet, so I have an appointment Monday morning to get this started.
