Hi

I have 4 Persians one ( Harvey )  is more flat faced than the other 3 but he doesnt have nearly so much trouble with tear staining Harry my largest cat is the worst one for tear staining he is 10 next month and has always been the same very often I clean his eyes twice a day and he is very prone to ulcers in his left eye too  My other Pewter Persian Oscar sometimes has a few problems and Cindy Harveys sister does not have a flat face but her eyes are constantly weeping so it doesnt always mean that the flatter the face the more trouble they have with their eyes

So would you say this is excessive to the point of me not getting the kitten? I'm not sure if the woman is too elderly to care for them or if this is a red flag for health problems. I'm going to see kitten today and will ask all the questions I can think of. But I don't want to make a huge mistake in getting him.

You need to ask a lot of questions.  Can you see the pedigree?  How many litters do the moms have before they are retired?  How about the dad?  Does she only breed registered cats?  The breeder should be able to tell you about their health histories as well.

Also look around the breeder's house.  How many cats does she have?  Is it overwhelming?  Is it clean?  Is each cat getting the proper care and socialization that it needs?

If I were you, I would walk away from this situation.  A reputable breeder wouldn't be showing photos like that to a possible buyer.  It says to me that her cats are not getting the care and attention that they need.
Thank you so much for this valuable information! I've never purchased a pedigree kitty before and can use all the advice I can before diving into this. I posted a pic of the kitten above if that helps

The above does not look great to me.  A breeder who is too elderly to care for her kittens is a big problem itself.  Has she socialized them all properly?  Did all of the moms and all of the dad receive proper medical care and attention?  I personally wouldn't want a kitten, especially one I was going to breed, from any cattery that wasn't running at its 100% best.

This is a difficult one but I can see from the pic you will have quite a problem with its eyes I have had 3 Persians in the past ( 2 were rescues ) and I had no problems with their eyes at all I have shown my Persians and met many breeders too quite a few have problems with runny eyes which can be a nightmare when you show them

I think you have to ask yourself can you cope with the constant runny eyes and obviously I am sure you have looked into the grooming they need too my cats are 9, 10 and brother and sister will be 11 next month and I would not have changed anything for the world they are beautiful affectionate cuddly cats let us know what you decide to do

She has their pedigrees and said parents are very healthy, with champion bloodlines. She also said they are very well personalized and very affectionate. I plan on asking about his eyes as soon as I see him this afternoon. I will let you all know what I decided to do. Thanks for all the help guys! It's very appreciated!

Please do let us know how it goes.  I will say again that this is a red flag and a sign of neglect.  It's not just about the eyes - it's a standard of care.  Make sure you take note of the house, the cattery, and how many litters mom and dad participate in.

Just wanted to say good luck today have a look at the other kittens and mum and dad and see what they look like check the other end to make sure it is clean and no sign of tummy

problems as Persians can have delicate tummies and if you decide to buy him and I think I would be tempted  make sure you keep him on the food he is used to eating for now

As a person who shows their cats in CFA, I would like to say that champion bloodlines doesn't mean a whole lot. It only means that the cat who has it was shown for 6 rings and not disqualified. You need to look for grand champion ( has to beat 200 cats to acheive this), regional or national winners. I won't beat a dead horse because I have already stated my opinion on this particular situation.

I went yesterday and surprisingly her home was huge & immaculate! She kept the males together in a good sized room that had some shedding on the blankets but that was about it, no signs of neglect. They were all very friendly and came right up to me. Clean litter boxes etc. All the kittens looked well groomed and eyes on all kittens were surprisingly clean. No crust or goo at all. There was staining on the cheeks though. She had their records and everything looked normal. Mom and dad were very healthy and we'll taken care, not over breed either. In all honestly I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised!
The kitten I had my eye on was the friendliest letting me hold him and even fell asleep in my arms. I decided to get him. He's settled in well. He's taken quite fondly to my husband :). Being the only other male in the house, my husband now has a new buddy!

I have a female persian kitten who has been rather excited about new friend but I haven't fully introduced them yet. They've seen each other from across the room. We got in late last night after vacationing so I plan on doing the scent swapping today with a blanket etc for she and my resident himi with new baby boy.

I'll also be taking him to the vet asap to make sure he doesn't have any problems etc. And although his eyes have done great since getting him (no signs of excessive running ) I'll have them check those extensively also.

I feel good about my choice, but let's hope it remains that way after we've been to the vet!
Thanks so much for all your advice and pointers! It helped me tremendously in feeling like I make an educated decision!

I decided to get him. I was pleasantly surprised by the breeder and the kittens. I posted more about my experience in my last post on this thread.

He does have an extremely flat face, more so than I realized from photos. I got him yesterday evening and his eyes looked great, and since then haven't gotten bad. I've seen some slight clear tearing but nothing that looked concerning. I'm really not sure why the photo made it look so prevalent. Perhaps bad lighting combined with poor photo timing. I took this about an hour ago (almost 12 hours after getting him).
I do think I'm going to get the eye envy for those stains on his cheeks though. And definitely have the vet check them.

I'd love to see your baby! Are you posting from a computer or a device like phone or iPad? I'm using my phone and there are 4 icons at the top of my little conversation/ posting box.. the first is a "B", the second is a chain link, the third is a little picture with mountains & the 4th is an "@". If you also have those tap the little picture of mountains and that will allow you to attach a pic from your computer or device.

Wow!! They are all so beautiful & "magnificent" as the judge said! I'm so sorry you lost Toby:(

So out of curiosity, have you tried the eye envy? I just ordered the starter kit from amazon. Hope it's all its made out to be! Baxter (his unofficial name for the moment lol) hasn't had lots of running, however I've cleaned them twice with damp tissue, but it seems most of the staining is already there instead of constant running like I was worried would happen. And it's not sticky or gross, just normal looking tears. I hope it stays that way.

I did try Eye Envy quite a few years ago now and found it quite expensive and I personally wasnt very impressed then I was told by a cat show judge that the one that works best is the Eye Envy that you have to keep in the fridge but by this time I had tries so many things that did not work I was quite disillusioned !  I tried "Kleen Face" which takes quite a while to work and you need to apply it several times a day for the best results

Our vet told me to just bathe their eyes with boiled water but of course it does not do a lot for any staining I dont honestly think there is anything that really works like magic for this problem

Well I guess I shall see in a day or two. I should receive it then. If it doesn't I might try one of these homemade recipes listed in this thread .

Congratulations on your new Persian boy!  How did the vet visit go?  Have you decided on a name yet?  I'm sure your husband will enjoy his new buddy too.

I just wanted to add that this is our 3rd Persian.  Both our former vet who retired and our new vet who is a feline specialist recommended against any eye stain product.  It's a personal choice and not everyone will agree.  Our present Persian is a cream and I only use warm water on a cotton pad several times a day.  This works for us quite nicely but I realize every cat is different.  Best of luck!
