I hope the vet says he's improving.
You'll probably need to wait to try to retrain him until you're sure he's feeling better.
I don't know exactly how to do it - someone else might be able to walk you through the process better than I could.
After Oreo had his bladder surgery he continued to go outside the box until I replaced all the old boxes and changed litters - it turned out that he was associating his old boxes and his old litter (Feline Pine) with his pain.
For us, fortunately, switching boxes and litter was all that was necessary. I switched to Cat Attract for a little while, then gradually switched to our current litter (Fresh Results). I tried reintroducing Feline Pine, but he won't go for it.
If you're happy with your current litter, you may be able to switch to Cat Attract for a while, then gradually reintroduce it by mixing increasing proportions with the Cat Attract.
