I'm sure she is! She'll stay that way for a few weeks. When my cat's kittens were about 6 weeks old, she began leaving them with me every day, and heading upstairs for a HUGE nap in my bed. It was as though she really needed the break and the deep sleep. Please give your cat lots of wet food now.
Wet food is additional protein, especially one like Fancy Feast classic, where meat is the first ingredient. She needs it, and you'll use it to wean the kittens with eventually. I'm sure your cat would appreciate it. I recommend giving her as much as she wants while she's lactating. And the kittens will need it to grow on in addition to kitten chow.
Great, thanks @sarthur2 ! I will not have a choice of brand where I live, they only have one sort of kitten wet food so I will go with that. And buy a lot since that will be for the kittens too! I did not think yet about the next stage with the kittens hehe, I am playing this day by day right now.
Your cat may also like plain boiled chicken, tuna fish, or an occasional soft boiled egg. Finely crushed egg shells mixed into her wet food offer extra clacium, which is essential now too. It sounds like you're doing a great job!
Ahhh, chicken and tuna are way easier to find! I will get the food situation sorted out tomorrow, for tonight, she got 2 licks of cream cheese of my finger and that made her like her kitten chow again.
She is back with the babies and looks very happy. The little ones already look chubbier.
Thanks for asking, @talkingpeanut Babies look fine, Zoé is very zen now, mostly with the kittens and when she needs a break, she stays with me in the living room.
I got the kitten wet food and will give her some next time she comes out of the room.
She started bleeding this morning, watery blood tinged liquid. It does not smell bad and the liquid is clear. She actually cleans it up herself. It is quiet a lot but she seems happy, calm and she is eating and drinking so I am not worried. Should I be?
Vet said to bring her over but I don't want to stress Zoé out and separate her from the babies when they finally bounded. I told the Vet I would if she looks any different, feverish or in distress.
Kittens look fine, a lot of movement, saw some poop on the towels in the nest today so I am trusting that Zoé is doing a good job. I will take pictures a bit later.
Yes, you'll need to change the bedding in the nest every couple of days. Glad you got kitten wet food. The spotting is normal for cats for a few days after giving birth. You said it was a lot. How much was it? She should not hemorrhage. Glad to hear they are bonding well!
It is more blood tinged liquid than pure blood, very light color and watery. They were three bigger puddles but she was more interested in stealing my breakfast while it was happening. I think it stopped now. She just cleaned herself and the floor but didn't seemed phased at all. I will watch her closely and if she seems different, will take her to the vet.
I am glad too that the mother instinct kicked in! I am very proud of her, she is so young and is doing everything right
Just FYI, the discharge sounds like a normal post-partum amount, and you're an excellent cat parent. She sounds extra hungry though! Give her as much food as she wants now. Did she like the wet food? Perhaps you can boil some chicken for her too.
This sounds ok for now and I would continue to monitor. If she does go to the vet, you will need to bring the whole family in. You definitely don't want to separate mom and babies this early.
Watch for losing blood. Otherwise, so glad she's settled in!
This is very reassuring, @sarthur2 She just came out as you posted and loved the kitten food, she ate almost an entire pouch. The bleeding stopped, I changed the towels in the nest and added an absorbing padd underneath. She is back with the kittens.
The stealing my breakfast thing is not about being hungry hehe, she always wants whatever I put in my mouth and I don't let her. I guess it is more about being a 6 month old curious kitty. But this means she is acting like her normal silly self
Thank you again for everything, I feel like things are going better and I am less scared
Zoe enjoyed her first taste of tuna, the kittens are growing and I finally gave them names.
The one that looks like her mum is Pepita, she is quiet and very cuddly. The black one is Bob, the laziest kitten around. He keeps falling asleep and forgets to eat. The third one is Vic, he is THE boss. Bullying the others off the best tit, sleeping alone on mums back instead of her tummy, moving around like crazy. Finally, Cotton, who I thought was the runt, catched up to the others nicely and is participating in Vic's efforts to bother the two quiet ones.
