I live with my mom so when im not around shes there to take care of our cats but when im around i have one cat that starts having allergic reactions she scratches at her skin till she bleeds and has seizers. When i actually pet her its 100 times worse. When im gone for a few days at a time shes completely fine I've tried only using the soap and shampoo and conditioner and deoderant as my to see if thats the problem but she still only has these problems when im around she has messed up the tip of her tail pretty badly bc of it and bc of it my mom is making me get rid of her but no one wants to take in a sick cat and we cant afford vet bills

Never heard of this but i found articles that support the idea...your cat might benefit from an anti histamine on a vet's advice.  Don't treat without a vet's help.

Hi @cookie91

One of my cats has allergies too. We've not been able to find out exactly what she is allergic to as she only scratches during the winter. The issue hasn't been resolved yet, but she has been a lot better since our vet prescribed a steroid called Prednisone. Maybe something like this could help your cat.

I know vets bills are expensive, but a prescription of one course of anti-histamines or steroids won't cost that much. If it works at least you will know what to do to help the cat and you can consider re-homing or continuing with medication from there.

Good luck, please keep us posted.

That could be something you do and you dont notice.

Story: once upon a time I had a terrible allergia on my left arm. Since it looked very strange, I went to a Dermatological  Service in a specialised hospital. Few doctors looked at me, prescribe  me few pages of blool  tests and in a very academic language they said they do not know. Nothing happen after tests, which discovered that I was overweight (well, I could say that without spending hunderd ...  :-)  ).

After breaking my head and making a "film" of what I am doing every day, I discovered that one specific brand of soap is the cause. Oki, one may say. so what? That is quite habitual! Now it came the strange thing: to heal this up I stayed at home and use another soap. When I went to my job.. Bum! the allergy showed up again. Although I changed the soap brand. Home again . Allergy dissapears. Job. Allergy ... Bum! Again. Nightmare. A friend of mine told me that I am allergic to my job...:). Few other days of "filming" myself. Then, in a night - I got it! I remembered that I cleaned my briefcase (which I carry under my left arm - the one with allergy) by the same brand of the cleaning agent with the soap provoked my allergia in the first place.

What I am trying to say is that discovering the allergen is sometime more difficult that bringing peace on Earth.

Sadly it doesnt matter my mom is making me get rid of her and nobody wants her bc of her health issues. I looked into shelters but the will just kill her and no kill places require u to pay for fixing them and vet stuff which i cant afford now. She was never a cat we planned on keeping sadly. She was an abandoned kitten we found under our porch. My neighborhood is bad about ferrel cats.

I am allergic to scented products and you don't realize how many products are scented until you are. Laundry detergent, dish soap, hand soaps, and not everything says it is scented.

If re-homing is the only option and the only medical problem is the allergy then a no kill shelter should still take her. I know you say the money is an issue and I know here the rate is about $125 for a relinquishment but it really is in her best interest for you to find a no kill that has room. Kitten season is approaching (or here since a lot are being born or too young for new homes right now). Maybe you can ask your mom for a loan; since you won't be buying cat food anymore that is money you can use to pay her back over the next few months.

While you are at the rescue you could ask about TNR programs in your area and see if you can start trapping in your neighborhood. Getting involved with TNR would be a great way to help reduce the feral cat problem in your neighborhood.

In our country some cat owners make cat food at home. It is very easy, although not that healthy. Still, I think is a far better option than a shelter or re-homing.

Here you have the receipt (please, all TCS people, do not blame me, I know it is not healthy, but I think is much more preferable than actually killing the cat or send it to the shelter):

- 3/4 weight of raw meat (chicken or veal, for the reason are easier to cook, but pork is ok as well, providing it is fresh) - chop it very small

- 1/4 rice (the cheapest one can find)

Don't bother with exact measurement, you may estimate by seeing the portions, and you will adjust after looking in the bowl which component - rice or meat- has not been consumed).

Boil all together at will, but more than 10 min (depends on the type of rice, however)

Serve at room temperature, in small portions (not suitable for free-feeding), after adding a drop of fish oil or even cooking oil (one-two drops, not more!)

Time by time (once a week) serve raw meat (one spoon), carefully handled in hygienic conditions (wash hands, wash knife) - to add taurine (which is destroyed by boiling and cat cannot make it out of the served diet).

There is also a chance (not sure, but we can at least hope) that by doing so allergy will disappear. Why we consider always that vets and medication are the first choice? Why not leave the Nature to follow its path?

===

And I also tell you some from the "history" experience in my country: the less you care, the most interesting the cat life will be. Ok, it will be shorter (perhaps not more than 5 years), but in my humble opinion, freedom is always first choice.

Many years ago I never ever heard about "histamine", "antibiotics" and  vet was usually for dramatic situations only. So what? That was the time and cats were there. Were the cats happy? I have no idea. But everybody loved them and they survived to 2017 :-).

The original  sentence is "care kills the cat" and not "curiosity kills the cat" - and that is for a reason: we have to know a lot of things (more than we actually do) about the cat 's biology to be able to care them like in Space Station (in full artificial conditions).

My humble opinion is that if you feed that cat home-made like above and let her in peace , less care about allergies and so on, will be OK, the cat will live for ever in your home.

Please note that this my very personal opinion, it is an opinion very strictly related to this situation and by no means can be extended as a general advise on cat caring. Not at all.

===

Tell you mother to give cat a second chance. She deserves it. Like all of us do.

Does any one think letting her just be an outside cat will be fine bc money is a big issue which breaks my heart i love this cat a lot but my mother is fed up and just wants her gone. And like i said shelter suck cus they kill and cant afford the no kill ones i dont know anybody who wants my poor kitty so im wondering if just making her an ouside cat would also be best for her. I apriciate everyones ideas i feel like a shity person bc of this i hate when people get pets and just throw them out i hate that more than anything but at this point im wondering if it will be best with her. I also wonder if this is why the mama cat abandoned her when she was a kitten. Wont cats do that if the kitten has something wrong with it?

Outdoor cats do exist :-).  In my country  rural area there is many of them.

Some costs nothing at all.

The only point is to make sure the cat has not to cope with big dangers in the outside area.

====

You may address a shelter vet for free consultations, or at least a technician to perform basic checks. Approach  a college or vet students  for free care.

You can also ask the supermarkets to give you cat food that is close to expiration date, if you do not want to make home-food.

===

When you say "money is a big issue" what do you mean? The money for day-by-day care/feeding or the money for vets and meds? Or both?

Dangers depend on the area you live in. In some - coyotes. In other- mosquitos. In some other- cars. Or dogs. Or winter to cold.

There are solutions for all.

Is she spayed? If not, if she goes outside you're going to have 50 cats real soon :/.

Does she have all her shots? I wouldn't want to take the risk if not. Rabies shots are required for outdoor cats in most areas of the US so there could be legal trouble.

Some cats adjust easily, some don't. It really all depends on her personality. And what the dangers are in your particular neighborhood.

Here you have the receipt (please, all TCS people, do not blame me, I know it is not healthy, but I think is much more preferable than actually killing the cat or send it to the shelter):

I know you acknowledge that it's not a complete diet. I just want to point out to lurkers and others who read this that this would be fatal if fed as the sole diet of an indoor cat, and it would be a slow and unpleasant death. It lacks any source of calcium and, even with a small amount of raw meat once a week, far from enough taurine. Those are only the most glaring deficiencies. An outdoor cat who hunts may do OK with this diet, as they would get calcium and taurine from their prey.

The money issues is with the huge expense like vets bills and meds also i may be wrong but isnt making the food more expensive than store bought cat food. I can afford cat food and day to day care its the big things that we cant afford but i like i said we never planed on getting her she was abandoned my her mom on our property if my mom didnt bring her in and bottle feed her she would be dead right now. There are some hazards outside. Strays weather it be dog or cat is really bad.

Where are you located? There are members all over the world.

Someone might be able to help you rehome your kitty instead of putting her outside

Please do not put your cat outside!  She will be dead in no time.  She will also be pregnant in no time, which could kill her.  Putting an ill, intact cat outside is the worst possible idea.
