Bear is at the vet. He's very sick, liver looks horrible.

Does your vet not know someone else you can take Bear to for an ultrasound?
It can't wait any longer...

I agree with Denali, she may be an expert but an ultrasound is not that difficult that someone else couldn't do it - it would definitely give you a better idea of his liver and if there is any fluid to indicate fip

Aw I'm very sorry to hear that Bear is sick. He's a beautiful kitty, and I hope he gets better soon!

I like mews2much's suggestion about trying U of North Carolina. My vet referred me to our local veterinary medical teaching hospital when my kitty needed surgery. She's an excellent vet, but because they're a research institution, they have equipment that private vets may not have. They also have access to multiple specialists within the teaching hospital. They were extremely thorough, and offered care credit. It might be helpful to check with them about whether they can perform an ultrasound.

Good luck, and plenty of to both you and Bear!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and support.

Care credit is my only credit card... and there is only about $120 left on it. My vet is letting me charge my account there. It really bothers me to admit this, but I can't afford North Carolina State Veterinary hospital. I feel like a horrible cat mom, if I had the money he would already be there.

I have emailed several clinics asking if they do ultrasound, and if they will let me make payments. If I don't hear back from them by Monday then I will call.

Please don't feel bad about it...you are doing the best you can for Bear, and giving him such personalized, intense care. Definitely not every cat is so lucky, and Bear is very lucky to have you. I know the feeling of feeling like you're not doing "enough", but at the end, we all do the best that we can and know that we tried. Bear seems like a fighter; and you're definitely taking great care of him. Plenty more !

Do not feel bad. You are doing the best you can with Bear. Far more than many would. More vibes for Bear and lots of hugs for you

I wish that we had a good public pet insurance plan, that was non-profit.
We could all put in an equal amount monthly, share the expense of treatment.

Keeping you and precious Bear in my thoughts.

How's Bear doing? I've been anxiously following this thread and haven't heard anything for a couple of days. Hope he's improving more and more each day (even if his labs don't exactly show it)

Sorry for the lack of updates! I've been very busy with Bear, school/exams, the other cats, and a puppy!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments, and support!

Bear has been eating baked chicken the last few days, about a cup a day! I let him eat whatever he will eat. And a great thing is that the chicken makes him thirsty, I have watched him drink water on his own (3 times so far) after he eats the chicken. His jaundice isn't any better. He is on the same meds still. I still have to assist feed him 99% of the time. He is still doing good with the SubQ fluids, he gets 50-150 depending on how he's doing. If I see him drink water that day, I only give 50. On the other hand if he vomits I give him 150. He has only threw up about tiwce in 2 weeks, that is great! He is still very perky and acts happy and curious about everything, just like normal Bear.

I got a 2nd opinion, from another vet at the same office when I went on Thurs. He said that it takes the jaundice a long time to go away, and that the liver has an amazing ability to regenerate. He sounded pretty hopeful but he did mention that if Bear took a turn for the worse that it could be fip, cancer, ect causing all of this. He also said that we are doing everything right, that there isn't anything else we can do at this point besides the ultrasound. He tried to call the ultrasound lady again for me, and she didn't answer but he left a message for her about Bear. I called Friday and he said he still hadn't heard from her, he thinks she could be on vacation. I am going to call again Monday and see if he has heard from her. If he hasn't I am going to ask for her name... lol I am going to risk looking like a total stalker and see if I can find her on FaceBook or something, LOL. I am very desperate at this point. I have called the other vet clinics and asked if I could get an ultrasound and if they would let me make monthly payments on it, but they all say that I must pay in full. I don't have the money to pay in full, my vet is letting me make payments. This is just crazy.

Something cute that Bear has started doing: When I wake up in the morning I look over at him to see if he is ok. He starts "meow Mooow Meowwwww!" Which is classic Bear for "Give me food NOW!" The funny thing is that there is 4 bowls of different typs of food/treats in his crate at ALL times... but what he is demanding is for me to love on him while he eats the food that has been in his crate all night.
He will not eat in the morning until I pet him and love on him, the minute I stop petting and talking to him, he stops eating. LOL! I don't mind it at all, I think it's adorable. He only eats a tiny bit at a time though, anywhere from a tablespoon to a teaspoon full even when I give him a couple extra hrs between feedings. I am still feeding him every 4-5hrs around the clock.

Yes, the poor fellow is still in the crate.
The vet has me scared that it may be fip, and my other cats could catch it if it is fip. For those who don't know, fip is almost always fatal. I do get him out and love on him several times a day. And at night I sit with him on my lap and watch tv with him, until he doesn't want to be held anymore. I would take him for walks on a harness outside several times a day, but he hates going outside. He freezes up and gets scared. I wish he liked going outside though, that would be good exersice and fun if he did.

I read this and really don't understand where your vet is coming from to think this might be FIP... But hey... he is the vet so... I hope Bear gets better soon, and you can get on hold of this lady or get another solution situation... That is a real drag... I am so sorry you are going through this

Because about a week before Bear got sick my mom found a stray, it was in very bad shape. We took it to the vet and it was dying, barely able to walk, boney, jaundiced, and his organs were shutting down. More importantly, his abdomen was full of thick yellow-orange fluid. The vet was almost sure that it was fip, but it did not matter the cat was dying. We had him pts. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, my mom couldn't stay and I didn't want him to die alone.

But my cats had no contact with him what-so-ever. Unless I spread it to Bear myself. I changed clothes and washed my hands before I touched the cats, or anything else. But there is still a chance that he got it somehow.

Thanks for the vibes, we realllly need them!

I know... I read that too... I still think that one thing is one thing, and another is another... But that is just me... I do not believe this possibility... at all... But regardless of what I think... How much is this thing going to cost? How much do you need for the ultrasound? If you don't find this lady, how much do you need to come up with to get it done elsewhere?

I think so too, but figured it was wishful thinking.

The quote that my vet gave me for the lady he uses is $300. The quote I got from the other vets were $240-350. But some of them use a "mobile clinic" and I bet that is the same lady. I found 2 more clinics to call though, maybe they can help.

How soon do you need that money? Let's work on you getting it - that's priority #1.

Depends on if he gets ahold of the lady. If he does, and I don't have to directly pay her, then I can just charge it to my account there. If he doesn't get up with the lady, then I would have to schedule the ultrasound with another clinic and pay the day we get the ultrasound.

I have 2 more clinics that I have not called, one a family member has been going to for a very long time. Maybe they would let me make payments. I will call monday when they are open.
