You might want to stress that where you can take the kittens back or have them returned to you this will be with no monetary compensation to the other party.  Sad as it may seem someone could ask you for payment of their expenses or to compensate them for money spent on the cat / loss of their cat.  I'll take a look at the breeder's contract I have for Mouse when I get in from work and see if there is anything else in there.  I think there might even be an article about it on site and will take a look for that as well.

True. She can ask for their Drivers License and write down the number and expiration date. That would probably be simplest, and does offer a way to track people down if necessary.

Our pet laws in the US are very lax, @GrizzlySapien. It's a shame, and they need to change, but for now, that's the way it is.

Actually, @sarthur2  I think that the law in the US seems more strict than in Greece. And I say that, based on the SPCA shows I watch here in Greece. You have Animal Police. We don't. Maybe the law there is "lax" because your country has formed an animal protection plan that actually makes sure that the law is enforced, whenever it becomes known that someone abandones, or practices animal cruelty.

Here in Greece, we don't have that. We just depend on citizens' reporting and most of the time, it's the citizens themeselves who sue people who do not follow the law. That's costly for a citizen. Not like it would be on an animal protection organization or police etc.. And the sad thing, is that most of the time, citizens don't talk. Because they might be acquainted with the person who is guilty of breaking the law and they are afraid. 

So, our law might seem more strict, but there it is not enforced often.. Last time I sued an illegal pit bull breeder, he threatened me to break my legs. I went above and beyond to protect myself. I worked with a vet and he printed "false" results that the parents of the litters he sold were sick, we went public on that, managed to be contacted by people who had bought puppies from him (not all of them - most of buyers wanted the pups to train them for dog-fighting) so, there were like 9-10 people who were sueing him at once. I did that in collaboration with the police of course.. So, the guy couldn't break the legs of 10 people, as you can imagine 

We managed to seize the dogs in his possession and rehome them, he paid like 80,000 euros (after settling) and we never went to court. It was a good thing, cause the vet who printed the false results didn't end up risking his lisence.. And all that happened cause we don't have Animal Police. If I had given in to his threats and stop sueing him, he would've gone cleared. But I got maaaad

On both contracts I signed for the cats that I have adopted the respective shelters included a part that said that the shelter wasn't liable for expenses incurred by damages to property or to person. Or for vet expenses after adoption.

4 kittens have been adopted! We have one with a home lined up and one we are keeping so we are all set for now! I will miss them but their adoptive families are a great bunch of people so I know they will be loved. We weighed them all one last time today as its their 8 week birthday today. All of them were a few ounces over 2 pounds. Right where they should be so polka did great with them.

Polka is still making so much milk that when I pick her up, it runs down my arms. She's still nursing 2 kittens though and she shows no desire to stop. In fact, she chases them around and they happily oblige her. Polka is a little confused and seems a little sad but not like she was when she lost her kittens. The 2 remaining kittens don't seem to mind being without their 4 siblings. More milk for them is the way I think they see it. Lol

Lololol!! Polkas milk house! No more orphans that I know of but I'm friends with an attorney who works for a human society in Ohio. He oversees all their legal stuff. I contacted him asking about how we can become a 501.3c and what it entails. I actually had about a thousand questions. Lol. A good friend of mine is now really upset with me. Her cat go out and had kittens a few weeks ago. She asked if I could post her kittens on polkas page when they're ready to go. I agreed. Well that was before we decided to go for actual non-profit organization status. Before a contract was written up and we began establishing ourselves. I'm no longer Willing to put her kittens on for a few reasons. 1. We didn't rescue them 2. If my friend charged a fee for her kittens, which she needs to for their protection, we wouldn't be non-profit. She would make a profit off her kittens. 3. My attorney friend said it would be a bad idea because I am not physically responsible for those kittens and people may adopt them because they're under the presumption that they are adopting a rescue cat. We are just starting to build our reputation so I definitely don't want to mislead people and get a bad rap from the get-go. Am I wrong? Should I still stick to my original agreement to post her kittens under polkas rescue since we aren't an actual non-profit yet? If I end up giving up on this rescue, it won't be because of the kittens. It will be because of people. I've dealt with more drama this week than I normally deal with in a year. We had 4 prospective homes for butterscotch before someone followed through today. What we went through with these 4 families and then add on a close friend who now feels betrayed...... I don't deal well with this crap. Feeling guilt tripped. Phew. Felt good to rant. OH, To top it off, Chanel is flea free but her fleas managed to spread through the house so we are down another $300.00 in flea treatments. All is well though. Everyone is clear now.

Did you explain your reasons to your friend? You could try helping her find homes for the kittens on the side, but I would not put them on the site unless she literally and legally signs them over to you. It's the only way.

Sorry about the flea infestation. That was an expensive undertaking.

Glad you're inquiring about incorporating. Are there any kits out there you could utilize? The kind you buy at Office Depot or Staples? Or will you need an attorney?

I've seen some rescues post 'Courtesy posts' on Petfinder.  These are cats whose owners are trying to rehome for one reason or another.  They then have a disclaimer on the page, stating they are not responsible for anything.  But worded better than that.

I hope you didn't have to get an exterminator. You can buy Precor2000 online and while it won't kill fleas on animals, it'll kill fleas in the house, for about $35 or so you can buy 2 good sized cans.

We did advantage on 2 of our adult cats and both of our adult dogs. We used Adams flea medication for kittens on Chanel and polka and all 4 young kittens. We used ivermectin on all 8 rats and we washed all bedding, treated all carpets and furniture. It should be taken care of now. As far as having an attorney, he is helping us on the side but we are doing it on our own. He recommends we get established first and get the hang of how we want to run our rescue and start making our name known, then file for 501.c3 status. So we are going to apply the beginning of next year. We will work on establishing ourselves until then. I had a chance to talk to my best friend. She's feeling hurt. She wants to help us with our rescue, which I am more than happy to have her help but she feels like if she's helping, then her kittens should automatically be part of polkas house. I tried to explain that our mission is to end the overbreeding of cats and our mission statement is rescuing pregnant and nursing cats from situations where they are at high risk of abuse, neglect or euthanasia. By advertising her kittens as part of polkas house, we are condoning the breeding of our feline pets and we are straying away from our mission statement, as these kittens are in no danger. :-/ I offered a compromise and told her she can post them on polkas page but it needs to be clear that they are not part of polkas rescue. I'm not sure if she'll utilize the offer. I made her the secondary administrator on the page to help me keep up with messages and posts so she's welcome to the page anytime. I did let her know that if her cat gets pregnant again, I won't allow anymore kittens advertised on polkas page because for every kitten of hers that finds a home on polkas page, one of our rescues remains homeless, or worse yet, remains unrescued because we are full. Guess if I'm going to run an organization, I'll need to get some thick skin and be prepared for tough situations. Ho hum.

 Thick skin is an understatement.. People will always doubt and criticise and you'll get in a "*** mode" more times than you'll be able to count.. But it's worth it.. 

Also, I think your friend should try and understand your cause.. IMO you can help her, as long as you publicly clarify that you are just helping her to spread the word on finding homes for her kittens and that you bear no responsibility or claim no gain or profit from doing so. The most important help you can give your friend also would be to advice them to neuter their cat.. 
Yeah, I know, I neutered mine just 10 days ago (who am I to talk) but I didn't have him roaming around free spreading offspring.. Although, I would like to have had the chance of having small chocolate Grizzly babies around the house.. 

 But since their cat managed to mate, this means they didn't pay much attention to her.. Luckily she hasn't contracted any disease from mating..

She does support what I'm doing but I don't think she takes it as seriously. To her, it's more of a fun adventure. To me, it's more of trying to stop a heart breaking cycle. Like I said though, I did offer her to post her kittens on polkas site this one time as long as she clarifies that they are not polkas rescues. I also made sure she knew she couldn't request payment though because no profit can be made off of polkas site so it isn't a safe idea. I'm still in my 20's so im quite a bit younger than she is. I think she is just now realizing that I'm truly serious about this rescue. It wasn't just a random idea that I thought up when I was bored. Lol.
