No real wind here although we're starting to get a little breezy, no rain yet. Looking at the radar it looks like we'll get that in a couple of hours or so.

My understanding is that Pascagoula and Biloxi MS are really, really bad off.

Of course, what this means is, any homes or businesses that are along the coast at sea level, would be under 30+ feet of water.
Oh no, I thought that is was downgraded and things were not as bad as that....?

Also what will happen as it continues on north? Does it just lose steam....

Well, it did weaken from a cat 5 to a cat 4, but it was a strong and large cat 4. Now that Katrina is over land, the storm will die, because it needs open warm water to survive. However, it will take it quite awhile to weaken, because it was a rather large storm. Now that it is over land, there is another big danger, tornados. Hurricanes produce tornados once they hit land. I live in Ohio and we are expected to get the remnants of Katrina. We will not have the high winds, unless some big thunderstorms develop as katrina approaches. However, we are going to get a lot of rain, which is a good thing, because we really need it bad, but this is going to be flooding rains. I have to find a place for our neighbor's kittens that were born outside. They are 1 1/2 weeks old and will not do good if it rains that heavy.

Marge, did you see that link I posted with the categorys of hurricanes and the damage caused by each one? Even though it was downgraded, it came on land as a 4 which is a very serious storm and causes major damage.
Last year when Hurricanes Charlie and Frances came through Florida our area really only got tropical storm force winds and weather but we had extensive damage throughout our city. Power was lost for days in some areas and trees were down all over the place. We were on the east side of both of those storms which is the worst side. Tornadoes typically spawn from the storm as well.
Once the storm reaches land it will downgrade fairly quickly, last I saw Katrina was a 2. It will continue to weaken as it moves through land and will basically end up being a rainstorm.

Our SoCal station KCal9 just reported that Katrina is downgraded to a level 1. You TCSers are great - WOW! Did your prayers & vibes do a good job this time. Let's keep those {{{{prayers & vibes}}}} going out to areas already hit, esp. those poor animals who, for various reasons, have no humans looking out for them and those humans who, for various reasons, are unable to care for their pets....Also, tornadoes continue to be a threat for the states yet to be hit... ChristyGirl, my daughter is in Lebanon, TN, with her auntie, for a change of scenery (my daughter has brain-damage, but is used to severe weather, such as severe thunderstorms & blizzards). I send extra prayers for all the disabled, elderly, young & animals in this troubling weather...

Hubby came home from work early, we got the deck furniture off the deck into the shop, and bungeed the grill to the deck railing. Still mostly light rain here, although we have had a couple of bursts from bands.

We've had at least 4 or 5 tornado warnings (tornado on the ground) in the B'ham metro area, and we're under a tornado watch (possibility of tornadoes) until 7:00 or better.

We pay attention, but it's also awesome to sit in the garage/shop where we've now got the deck furniture and watch the wind and the rain while sipping on a brew and puffing on a rare (for us, we smoke a cigar about every 4-5 months
as a sybaritic treat) cigar.

Checking in...

We got some heavy wind from the feeder bands as they moved through Northeast Florida... just enough to turn a few umbrellas inside out and nearly jerk mine right out of my hand. Our power didn't even flicker, not much to write home about here. However, we sat in somewhat of amazement that we felt that kind of effect this far East.

Apparently the place where my sister's beach house is suffered minimal damage and barely any surge, which is completely nuts considering that towns on either side of it flooded pretty heavily. They were expecting a 12ft surge there so I'm not completely trusting of these preliminary reports although the police did say the road was passable... it definitely wasn't after Ivan.

I haven't heard from my sister in Pensacola yet so it's entirely possible that their neighborhood flooded, but I doubt it (due to where she is).

I've heard reports that in some sections of NO there are bodies floating around... this cleanup is going to be one horrendous job. Why, oh why, did anyone think it was okay to ride it out in their homes???

Like most of us, I've been glued to the weather channel and news stations since last night. Sending prayers to all those (and their animals) who are suffering due to Katrina. Wish I knew how to post the darn link...but CNN & MSNBC web sites, both have video feed of the damage and the animal efforts of Noah's Will.

Again, sending strength, hope & safe vibes to all those involved.

Very possible. Due to the fact that New Orleans is below sea level, burials are usually above ground in mausoleums. They're noted for it in fact and even have (had) graveyard tours. How macabre is that
?
