I never do because I wear Converse All-Stars which are a major PAIN to lace and tie up. It takes me like a good 5 minutes to get my shoes on and ready. For those that don't know what I'm talking about..this is what my shoes look like of course the pair shown here aren't mine but I didn't feel like getting my digital camera out so yeah lol:

Now to put my shoes on I take out the two top laces and slip my foot in then I go through each lace to make it as tight as possible..then I lace them back up and tighten those. Lacing is more difficult now because my cat tore up one of my laces. Plus I have to do this with one shoe at a time so yes it is more work than it may seem..those that own High-Top converse know what I'm talking about. There was an incident where I had to take my shoes off to go into someone's house and out of respect I did it. But when we were supposebly about to leave I put them back on and found out we had another good 20 minutes to wait and I was like "I'll..just..stay outside and play with the dog..
" So as for not taking off my shoes everytime I enter someone's home..I have myself a good excuse, plus they never complain.

When I come home, the first thing I do is take my shoes off-it's much more comfortable. But I don't expect guests to do the same thing, and I have a doormat for them to wipe their shoes off on before they come in. As for visting other people's homes, I've found that people usually tell you if they want you to take your shoes off. If nothing is said, I leave my shoes on.

My home...they come off as soon as I hit the door....anyone elses home....it depends...I have two good friends, one of whom I shared a dorm room with.....their homes are like my own...enter the door, the shoes come off! Anyone else's...it depends on their actions, if they do, I might, if they don't I won't. Now, church....I sit down, usually off they come!

I think it might be more common in Canada, as when I lived in Portland for awhile, no one did it, and everyone asked me why I was taking my shoes off!!!

Yes, its ironic that my parents don't take their shoes off in my house, but its more insulting to me b/c it makes me think they don't think my house is clean enough or "worth" taking their shoes off for.

That's why I loved Thailand. It's total custom to take your shoes off, even when entering stores sometimes. I loved it.

I usually take them off because in the summer I hate shoes and in the winter they are wet.

I am with you, Cindy. Growing up, our house had a mudroom off the kitchen, where we removed snowy boots, etc. in the winter, but other than that, shoes did not come off. I grew up in an old house with hardwood floors. If you were barefoot or in your socks, you risked getting splinters. Yuck! I have something on my feet always, except in the bed and in the shower. Sometimes it is slippers, but I don't wear uncomfortable shoes, even to work, so often they stay on.

If someone coming in my house wants to take shoes off, have at it, but I have never asked, nor do I expect anyone to remove footwear in my house.

Well I'm the first person that has voted I ask first, but if they say keep them off I still take them off anyway!

If I don't ask then I just automatically take them off.

I always take my shoes off before I step into my house or anyone else's house for that matter. I have NO IDEA what I've stepped in throughout the day and I do not want to drag all that junk through my house. Also, I have to clean the floors less often if I don't wear my dirty shoes all through my house.

I do the same thing. I always have to tell my boyfriend to take off his shoes when he's at my apartment. It's really annoying

One of the most embarassing moments of my adult life was over shoes. My friend and his family had just moved to a new house. He told my husband and I not to worry about our shoes. Then a few minutes later his father came in and saw us with our shoes on and he practically threw a fit. I was mortified. I've never been there since. I wanted to take DH and run.

To me taking your shoes off is informal. I always ask, but being in a person's home that I don't know in my socks is uncomfortable to me. Still I go with what they prefer.

I don't automatically think of it, but I do notice if there are shoes by the door, and if I see them, I ask. My sister's in-laws ask it, so I do check for the shoes!

If it was socially acceptable, I would never wear any shoes but my bedroom slippers! Those thick socks with the tready things on the bottom are great too! The moment I get home, my shoes come (along with my bra!) I do realize, though, this is offensive to some people, so I always make sure it's ok before I go taking my shoes (not my bra
) off in someone's home.

What do you all think?
It depends on which shoes I'm wearing and what the house is like. I will always ask, but if I've got my cheapie work shoes on it's a bit scary cos they are SO smelly!!!

LOL!! You and I are kindred spirits on that one, Stephanie. I have these slipper thingys with lamb's wool on the inside and no sole, and everyone I know thinks they are revolting except for me. The only other person I knew who had a pair used to wear his to parties cos they were so comfy!! And the bra? No question there, they are HORRIBLE things!

I nearly always take my shoes off! My mum would never let us wear shoes indoors and we had to wear slippers all the time (so that we wouldn't wear out our socks!) It's a habit now to take my shoes off when going somewhere, even now at work, my shoes are off under my desk!
