So Bella either lost her mucus plug at 1:30 am or her water broke. Pretty sure it was her mucus plug though. She's now having full on contractions. No one got much sleep last night here lol. She was in and out of her litter box every 2 minutes emptying her bowels and attempting to pee but just little bits came out at a time. She's very uncomfortable now and licking constantly at her bottom while having contractions then resting for a minute. Guess we're in for a long day.

Just after I posted that she had a kitten! Born at 6:37 am :D She's only had one. And I think there only is one, I had only felt movement from one the past few weeks I'm pretty sure. I have a question though, she chewed the umbilical cord from the placenta but let quite a long piece attached to the kitten and I just caught her trying to bite/pull it off. Should I be cutting it shorter now? It's quite hard now like dried up. Also, she's been biting the kitten :/ so I've had to sit by the box since she had it and make sure everything is okay. Why would she be doing this?!

Congratulations! [emoji]128149[/emoji]

You can shorten the cord to about an inch from the naval. It will fall off on its own in the next week.

She just needs to settle down, and it often takes new moms 24-48 hours to do this due to hormones. Do keep an eye on things until then.

Is the kitten latching and nursing well? Be sure to lavish praise on mom and feed her well!

I agree. What she is doing is normal. Just make sure the kitten latches onto a nipple. She may surprise you and have another!

Should I still tie it off and cut it then? And yes it's latching and nursing, sometimes has to be placed at a nipple and has a hard time finding it. Bella does get up and leave it every so often though. I'm just concerned about the biting. The kitten is psasming what do I do

If the cord is longer than 1", you can cut it off. If Bella tries to chew it off, let her. She will also want to lick the kitten and clean it up. This is normal, but don't let her bite it's neck or anything else. Did you mean the kitten is having spasms?

Bella is grabbing the cord with her teeth and reefing on it. The kitten is having spasms in between feedings. Baby was born 9 hours ago almost, she's been licking and cleaning it but she gets pretty rough and has bitten it and I've had to intervene.

Also I was asking how do I cut the cord now that it is dried up. Do I still need to use blunt scissors?

Yes, tie it off and cut it with scissors. Keep the kitten close to mom because it needs the heat. Or heat a sock with raw rice in it in the microwave and place it near the kitten.

Do they have to be BLUNT SCISSORS or does it not matter since its dried now

Actually I just measured it and it's about 3 cm long so I think I'm going to leave it alone..neither of them are really letting me touch it anyways. The end of the cord Has two pieces but I think it's okay

Post a picture so we can see if it needs trimming. Hopefully, mom will leave it alone now. Is the kitten okay? You can give her a rice sock or stuffed toy to cuddle when mom is not there. It's normal for mom to take breaks.

I do think you should tie the cord off and trim it just a little. It's a bit long. That way it won't be an issue and it's safer. Is the baby doing okay otherwise?
