He's incontinent of bowel and bladder from what I can tell thus far. He pooped a substantial amount day before yesterday, and he was 4 weeks old Sunday. Bob has birth defects, and has yet to be actually diagnosed as to what's wrong. (That's it in a nutshell I guess) he started eating real food Friday, and his brothers are now using the box as of today for most and yesterday for one of them.

Your kitten is likely suffering from what is known as "Manx Syndrome". He's not a Manx, but appeared to have been born with a non-functioning tail, which you had amputated when Bob was about 2 days old.

Cats without tails tend to have genetic birth defects such as spinal problems that can sometimes make walking difficult, and can also lead to incontinence. Many cats with this condition are otherwise normal, but may always need help with cleaning up after going potty. Many wear diapers.

There is not much a vet can do other than take an x-ray to confirm the diagnosis. Bob will always have special needs. This is why vets suggest euthanizing such kittens, because they require extra care. I find that to be a cop-out, especially if the kitten is otherwise normal, which Bob appears to be.

I suggested waiting to see this vet since Bob is only 4 weeks old, and it will be a big day. You will have a better idea how well he can walk and play and use the litter box in a couple more weeks. He may master the litter box more slowly than his litter mates, or not. It may be too soon to know. I think it does not always pay to rush these things.

This is what I was figuring since he was taken to have his tail done. I was assured by the vet that this wasn't possible and he would be normal. He follows me around, plays with his brothers, and runs after my dog so I believe he will live just fine. This won't affect him getting neutered any will it? I really think I need tips on how to help him pee and poop. I haven't seen anything for kittens, only cats. They say that helps have a normal life for him and a less messy one for myself. He may be different, but he can hop, run, slide to the side, or whatever he decides to do forever here. I am going to find him a diaper cover that's small enough so he can go wherever he wants without worries. I've done lots of research on the subject already as this is what I've thought since I saw her was wetting himself.

To avoid constipation you may want to add drops of olive oil to his wet food. You can always stimulate him to go as one would with a younger kitten. Infant glycerin suppositories can also be used for constipation. A small piece is shaved off of one suppository and inserted. It usually works in a few minutes. I think the peeing is involuntary and not much you can do about it. Again, I think time will tell you more as he learns to compensate.

The vet should have known that a lifeless tail might mean problems. However, the vet did not cause the issue by amputating. The issue is genetic. The vet should have recommended an x-ray to confirm any issues.

Yeah I'm a little upset about the vet not thinking of it, or listening when I asked twice. Either way it won't change anything. I am afraid he's going to get all backed up as far as both pee and poop go bcz I don't really know how to tell whether he is empty or not. I may take him to the expensive vet and ask them to show me how to tell and such as at this point that's what he really needs. He gets cleaned 3 times a day, one is usually a water rinse after work and a drop of dawn when it's really stuck. Going to try and make a tiny diaper cover for him for when I'm home and he's out bcz he likes to chase me down and get cuddled. The other babies r all doing great by the way, and I think I have found homes for all of them.

You can buy grocery store brand diapers and cut them to his size as he grows. Just buy a roll of adhesive tape to tape the diapers and he should be okay. You may need to stimulate him mornings and evenings to pee and poop as you would a younger kitten who has no mom and needs stimulating.

You can stimulate him over a sink for less mess. Again, oil added to his food will prevent constipation.

Was it the expensive vet who amputated his tail, or the other one? The expensive vet suggested you euthanize, right?

And you're keeping Bob, aren't you? Great you're finding homes for the others!

The cheap vet said euthanize him, the expensive vet I have to go see to get anything said. I doubt they suggest euthanasia as I had a dog with cancer and they never pushed it, just allowed me the option when him and I were ready. Bob will not be seeing the cheap vet here ever again, we will pay more for someone who doesn't want me to kill anything with a problem. I will put oil in his food starting today to make sure he doesn't get stopped up. Bob is a permanent now yes. He will go nowhere as long as I'm still kicking myself.

I'm pleased to hear that the cheap vet will be out of the picture, and that you are committed to giving Bob the quality of life the little fellow deserves. My good but expensive vet allows me to make payments on my bills over time. Perhaps yours will too!

Well, the vet thinks there's lots of hope for him! She wants to try Lazer treatments on his spine to see if perhaps he can gain at least part of his feeling back and hopefully be continent one day. She is very impressed with him overall and giving him an enema and expressing his bladder. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up to much, but I'm very excited for him, and I'm so curious as to how this turns out!

This is good to hear! Is there a downside to the laser treatment on his spine? How much poop came out with his enema?

She acted like there were really no side effects, it is just to reduce swelling mostly and returns things to their normal state. She got a ton of pee out of him (which was really cloudy and smelled terrible) and she said she got some poop out with his enema that was really hard, but right after his laser treatment he pooped a ton! Then when they laser treated his bladder he did even more, and even more again once we were gone. He weighed 1.2 lbs when we got there and he was 14.8 ounces when we left! Poor little Bob! He looked so worn out when we left. We go back on Friday for another laser treatment, so we have time to see what goes on in between. He has feeling to poop, so she thinks he could at least be able to do that one day on his own! She gave him an antibiotic for a uti cause she said she's positive he has one as much as there was and as bad as it looked. I'm so excited for him!

I'm glad she gave him an antibiotic for the UTI, and glad she got him cleaned out. I am very excited and hopeful that he will improve with treatment too!

Did the vet do an x-ray to see where the problem is on his spine?

I'm sure Bob was wiped out after all that! Bless his little heart!

At 4 weeks old he should weigh about 16 ounces, and continue to gain about one pound a month for the next 5-6 months.

No, she didn't do an x-ray. I think she was trying to save the money because she already is sure that it's because of a spinal defect. She said she was going to fix what she could for now and later we could address exactly where his problems coming from if we need to. Yes, I assumed he was small after I realized that he was so full of bad stuff. I guess him being 2 ounces under isn't as bad as it could be. I'm so glad that he has such a good shot of getting better.

I made Bob a diaper out of an old hospital gown and stick on velcro. It isn't the best, but the diaper I ordered and got today was way to big. I'm glad he goes back tomorrow for his treatment bcz I feel like he is backing up with urine again and I tried to get him to go but I got scared I was going to hurt him. He tried to use the litter box again today, but nothing came out. Poor little guy

Okay, you need to ask the vet to show you how to stimulate him for both pee and poop. It is very important that you be able to do this for him a couple times a day right now. It is easy to do, and after a couple of times you will be comfortable doing it, and Bob will be healthier for it.

Thank you for everything you are doing for Bob. He's a lucky little guy to have you in his corner! [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

Well Bob had another laser treatment done and he seems to like them. He pooped a tiny amount after they did his spine and a little dot when they did his bladder. It seems to help a little with that at least. Poor guy they showed me how to drain his bladder (he was already very full again) except the vet had already left and the assistant was afraid to squeeze to hard so he said tomorrow when I go in to talk to the vet and she can show me exactly how much pressure I can apply to empty him completely. He has a whole bunch come out once again today though. I take him back at 930 am for another laser treatment so we will see what all the vet says then, and how full his bladder is this time. Still not much happening (as far as I know) in the poop department. He still goes and digs in the litter but nothing ever happens just digging my, relocating, and more digging. Poor little guy.
