Would you think it might be a bit hard to breath and difficult to sleep with a 10 pound bag of potatoes on your chest?  Would someone please tell our Joey, former feral/stray, that at 12 pounds he is just as bad?  I can't tell him because I was so pleased he wanted to cuddle and snuggle I couldn't bear to make him move.  Plus, please tell him he's HOT and his purring keeps me awake too.  Good thing we got that extra hour of sleep last night, I needed it.

I'll gently pass that message onto your Joey if you have the same conversation with my Kitty because I can't bring myself to tell her the exact same thing either [emoji]128569[/emoji]

Telling them doesn't work.  I tell Montressor nightly to get the bleep off my pillow and he comes right on back every time I move him.  Cats are going to do what cats want to do.

Try a short hiss and a stare. That's cat for "no!"

Awww, but that would hurt his feelings!

The Mu has to sleep under the covers with me and she insists that I spoon her. If I roll over in the night she gets out of bed and crawls back under the covers on the other side so I can spoon her again.

She's a former feral too. Spent her first six months living in a storm drain under my old apartment building. She's been making up for lost snuggle time eve since.

Sophie likes to walk on me and stand on me. She prefers my back but will walk up my leg and stand on my side if I'm sleeping on my side.

ETA- Sophie is much closer in size to a 5 pound sack of taters though

I always sleep on my side so luckily, I don't have to worry about trying to breathe with a heavy kitty on my chest.  However, I do have to try to sleep with a kitty kneading my head and using his claws.

Oh yes. The kneading. I have been awakened to find both Sophie AND Henry kneading me. Henry usually keeps the claws tucked in. Sometimes Sophie's will be out just a touch until I tell her, "no claws, please". Then she puts them away and goes back to kneading.

LOL, it's great the company I have with this, so many of you putting up with the same thing, short of breath and tired.

Last night Joey was already up by my pillow, waiting.  He didn't end up on my chest.  After I wiggled him around a little he ended up on his back beside me, looking up at me, waiting for pets.  I don't know how long he might have stayed if DH hadn't stubbed his toe and let up a yell and frightened Joey away when he came to bed.  Darn DH and his tender toes.

Joey did come back in the middle of the night and he's so cute, he comes up and peers at me first, before settling in next to me or on me.  I'm not sure if he's checking to be sure I'm really there or asking if it's ok or seeing if I'm awake so he can have some pets.

I have two grown littermates, and I'd much rather have them sleepy and snuggly when I go to bed, instead of playing wide-awake and keeping me up! My girl, Marley, likes curling up on my legs, and my boy, Charlie, curls on my chest, so at least their weight is spread out.

This thread is surprising to me. I find it's 10000x easier to sleep when I can hear my kitties purring and have them right next to me. It's a nuisance I appreciate greatly.

I'm right there with you on that one.  I love going to sleep listening to purrs.  This morning John put Mickey on the floor and I asked him why he didn't like the purring and he said something about not being able to sleep with the excessive vibrations and I'm just like, you're a weirdo and went back to sleep.  I didn't get my Murphy and Connor cuddles last night cuz I had to keep MIckey shut in the bedroom away from the food and water.

Wrap arm around, gently roll on your side and make a furious attack of belly pettins, if that is not enough torture him with putting lips on his belly and blowing with ptrrrrrr sound, but be quick, he might think it is new game which needs to be played with hind leg yabbing claws extracted!

They will get a hint of too much love or then they figure out nibbing belly middle of night is what that playful human wants, you never know about cats, however sudden grab and belly rubbing has worked for me previously when years ago I had such issues.

Good wrestle is what they do with each other, so cat probably does not see it as negative, but it must be done with care, love and as a act of play, aim is not to get cat off, aim is to gain hunting victory in constant game of hunt they live in, by getting cat on his back without cat realizing what is happening and skinning by belly rubbing, you gain a victory in that game. Just wait when you have hands full of groceries though...

Sometimes it is bit of chess with them, they are really good at playing you where they want you, countless of times they have managed to steal my good spot in warm bed, then licking themselves and pretending so innocent. Luckily there is cat food, easy to steal good spot back with it :D

Oh, if belly rubs fail, use the blanket! Snuggle/wrap him into blanket and belly rub, it is love/hate thing for them, kind of play fight that enhances bonding, sometimes mine love it, sometimes hate it, but when I had issue with big cat on my chest, it also did work, well caused cat to sleep in arm pit, but that is easier when trying to sleep :D

Oh.  I thought the OP was trying to discourage the kitty from sitting on his or her chest?
I don't think @Piano Cat  is seriously trying to discourage him. I think it's supposed to be a jokey thread where we all compare what it's like to sleep with our kitties.

Is that right, Piano Cat?

LOL, yes, of course.  Because we thought Joey was feral at first I'm thrilled he wants to cuddle with me.  It would be nice to breath though.  LOL

Here's another conundrum.  Now your cat(s) and you are cozily snuggled up in bed, what happens when you have to get up in the middle of the night?  How do you do it without disturbing the cat so much he leaves?  Joey likes to sleep on top of the covers.  I've found I can move enough to grab them and pull him down lower on my body, or beside my body, enough to allow me to slowly withdraw each leg.  Getting back in to bed is just as tricky, though I re-snuggle Joey in the blankets he's usually moved a bit so I'm getting back in one leg at a time, slowly, but feeling my way with my toes to be sure I'm not disturbing him.  Then I slide the covers back up.  I may be old enough to need to get up in the night to pee but I'm still agile enough to contort myself to get in and out and still have my snuggle buddy with me.

You are hilarious....and here I thought I was the only one who did this [emoji]128514[/emoji]. Done slowly enough, this a very effective method. The key is to move slowly!

I wouldn't know how to sleep without a gang of cats on and around me! They all sleep on my side of the bed except my Jack - he has taken my husbands pillow. I am just happy that the dog doesn't want to sleep on the bed.  I would have to go sleep in one of the other bedrooms because there wouldn't be room for me!! I can always tell when the weather is getting colder since they tend to move up the bed - summer they spend mostly at the foot, but cold weather they snuggle at my stomach or higher. Getting into or out of bed requires some skill so not to disturb them.

I can't get out of bed without disturbing them, no matter how slowly I go.  They follow me to the bathroom and then come back to bed with me.  They have to make sure the toilet monster doesn't get me, I guess.
