Our little Sangria (15 yo) had a liver lobectomy in 2022. They removed a large cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer). She was cancer-free up until just now. Our general vet did a cytology on an abdominal lump that was growing from her abdominal wall, and it came back as carcinoma.
Today, we took her to a specialist, and we opted for palliative care. The intent is not to try and cure the cancer but to try and slow it down and give her a good quality of life. She doesn't have any obvious symptoms right now, and her blood work came back great except for a bit of anemia for which she got an iron injection and will receive a hormone to stimulate red blood cell production once a week for 4 weeks.
The drug of choice for palliative for us was Palladia. The specialist said it is generally well tolerated and could potentially slow the cancer although it's not guaranteed. He was careful to remind us that it won't be a cure. After lots of crying at the vet hospital today, we decided this was the best course of action. She's older, has arthritis, and had a tough recovery back in 2022 from her liver lobectomy. We don't want to put her through another surgery.
We also have some "as needed" meds just in case she starts showing symptoms --- mirtazapine, gabapentin, omeprazole.
My question: Has anyone here used Palladia for cancer in their cat? Did it buy you more time?
