I was researching online info re: one of my cats' digestive problems, and I came upon the following --

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/whiskas-cat-food.html.

The Consumer Affairs site documents 137 complaints about Whiskas Temptations, and these are not frivolous or trivial complaints! Severe vomiting, lethargy, renal failure, and ultimately, in many cases, death. Some of the reports are less than one month old.

In addition, I see nothing online indicating a recall.

What's going on with this product? There seems sufficient evidence of a potentially lethal response to the product to be able to recall or at least formally investigate  it.

Oh no, my cat loves these. Thank you for posting the link--horrifying. These have made him throw up on occasion but I wasn't worried. . He's healthy otherwise, I hope... I wonder what's going on?? Veery troubling!

Thank you for the information concerning the integrity, or lack thereof, of the Consumer Affairs site. It really does look like they operate through a questionably legal process of extortion -- if a business wants to respond online to negative reviews, they must pay. However, Mars is not a small business that could create local competition, so someone might be motivated to badmouth them, as nasty and low as that is. Mars is a multinational corporation and I can't see one of their competitors having 137 negative comments posted about a pet product that allegedly results in serious illness and/or death. I will look further into this. If anyone knows something I don't, please let me know.

Yes, they might be questionable, but I remember the numerous ignored complaints about the dog treats killing dogs, and, before that, the dog food recall. It was sites that this that were calling attention to the issues, sometimes years before action was taken to address the issue.

I noticed on the consumer site that many people are saying that this seems to be a sudden issue, and sometimes only with certain flavored treats. This has been my experience as well. My cat ate the chicken treats for 2 years, now won't touch them after throwing them up last summer. The chicken dentabites make him sick if he eats more than a couple. He can't tolerate the dairy ones at all, though he loves them. It's all a little strange. I'm curious to see other responses, but I'm really tempted (no pun meant) to withhold these treats until these claims are investigated.

Wow thank you for posting this. I'm not sure the site is reputable but it's always better to be safe than sorry! I'll look into finding new treats for my baby

I do feed my cat Temptations but i also feed him PureBites which are just freeze dried treats with one ingredient. I believe PureButes is much healthier and that can be something you can look into if you want to switch treats brands.

Thanks for the site. i have seen those complaints before but I've chalked it up to the fact that cats have sensitive stomachs and can develop allergies. I will, however, look more into this and come to a more informed decision whether or not i want to continue with Temptations.

Consumer afairs is corrupt just like many other things we depend on to tell us what is good and what is bad? I lost 1 cat to temptations...I didnt know. he had just turned 11. Now my 2nd cat who will be 11 soon is exhibiting the same signs. Want something done you will have to start throwing money at consumer affairs and the FDA in order for them to give a shyte.

I give Andraste dry treats made by Whiskas every day - one or two pieces a day.... I guess I will change brands...

I stopped giving Andraste whiskas' wet food right after the first time - she got sick just after eating the stuff. I should have taken that as an warning and changed the brand of the treats too.

*THERE CERTAINLY DOES.*  And thank you for posting this information.  Maybe the scoffers will reconsider their insensitive comments.  Many lives have been lost and much suffering has occurred.  It's time to get this issue dealt with!

EVERYone's cats love these.  They're called "kitty crack" by some for that reason.  But I know I will never buy them again.  We may like or even love a lot of things,  but that doesn't mean we should use/have them.

My cats loved them too, but I've switched now to Kitty Yums by Blue Buffalo, and they haven't complained ;). I hear good things about Blue Buffalo, and would definitely recommend :)

Good on ya!  SPOT brand "Feline Harvest" treats are our choice -- they're grain-free, affordable, and come in several flavors, including tuna, salmon, and chicken, all favorites here.

Most experts would say that wet food is not only very necessary because it contains a lot of moisture, is easily digestible, and good-quality wet contains important nutrients in balanced formulas; many advocate against feeding any dry food at all, but I do feed high-quality dry as an "extra" along with the wet food.

My last cat, Ruby, lived 19 years. For many of those years she enjoyed her Temptations treats. We fed her 12-15 treats per day as a snack in between 3 oz cans of Fancy Feast classic puree. She was a very healthy indoor cat until age finally caught up with her when as she neared her 19th year.

Our beloved Rani angel was like that, too.  About an hour before bed time, she would start haranguing for her Temptations.  Sometimes she would climb to the top of the 7' catpipe in the master bedroom and launch herself onto the bed from there, making quite a thud.  She would not stop until she got her Temptations.  When they started making her sick, I switched to better quality treats, which she initially loved, but tapered off on.  There was never any substitute for Temptations, as far as she was concerned.

So what's the problem with Temptations?   So far,  I've not seen any ill effects in my cats.

Doing a bit of research the only bad I can come up with is some of the ingredients may have come from China, at least in the past. Maybe that is why there was a problem in the past? (I'm just guessing) Most pet stuff suppliers have started to veer away from getting stuff from China recently though. Looking at a bag of temptations, at least in Canada, they are made in Ontario. However there are way better treats out there for cats, so that are healthier options. Just like eating a bag of junk food is not good for you but probably isn't going to cause you to die. My guess is a combo of some people having bad experiences with the treats (cats can have allergies or sensitive stomachs), and websites like that customer affairs one that  basically try to force companies to pay them, or give bad reviews. Also trolls love review sites, and there is nothing preventing people going online and saying what ever they feel like, true or not. So there may not even be as many cases as the internet makes it seem. Pet foods are unfortunately not subjected to the same standards as human foods, so soiled or tainted treats are going to happen more often then human food (but it does happen with human food too).

That being said though, any treat really should be just that, a treat and not an normal part of the daily diet. Personally if you are feeding a good quality diet to your cat (whiskers is not), a little bit of junk food (Temptations) as a treat probably wont be the death of them. As I said though there are way better treats for cats then temptations, just like there is way better food then Friskies or Whiskers.
