Awkward...I don't see how you can remove the collar without talking to your neighbours. On the other hand, if you've already done a spot on flea treatment on her then the collar must be removed as you're doubling up on treatments which is a really bad idea. Remove it then talk to them (or get your mum to) is the best option. Removing it without talking to them could be counterproductive - yes, cats loose collars when they're out and about (I lost count of the number of collars I found adorning the bushes when growing up!) but for all you know they'll replace it and keep replacing. From what you said, you're not even certain that it's a flea and tick collar. Remove it, but keep it and talk to the neighbours is the best option. I know you don't want to talk to them, but it may be your only choice now. Get your mum to help if you can. God luck.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately; I've been very busy and it seems that some genuine experts are helping you now. I have very little actual experience with fleas as I live in Denver, Colorado, also known as "The Mile High City;" fleas are much less of a problem at altitude, and it's been many years since I had an indoor/outdoor cat. And now it's time for me to get busy again.

Hey, thank you
columbine & margret
Im gonna go with my mum I think
hopefully she,ll agree and tell em
that the collars that say flea and tick collars are
dangerous so you must, nt buy them
and i will chuck it away before ,
but sisters keep saying its their cat so you
cant take it off , whereas I call it a street cat who isnt feral
also if it was their cat they could atleast put
a effort to
. Feed her
. Give her shelter or keep her inside,
if I come home at 8, 9 or even 10 in the evening she
is always their and then she run Inside
. Even play with her , give her respect

Its okay margret it will be nice to have advice from
you to , but columbine is also a BIG help towards
me

. Thank you margret and columbine

Hope it goes well with your neighbours. Don't chuck the collar before talking to them...its their property not yours. Remove it if you want but keep hold of it. Bear in mind the laws about what chemicals can go into the collars are different here than in the US. The scariest ones are banned for cats here.

When you talk to them try not to be too judgemental. Yes, they're acting irresponsibly (and shamefully so) with this cat but you need them onside. Go in too strong and they'll just get defensive or worse. You don't want them stopping you from caring for this sweet girl, so go carefully. Tact is essential.

:vibes: that it goes ok :)

Permethrin (the most common 'danger' chemical) is present in some flea and tick collars in the uk, but at very low levels.

Maybe a better line to take is this quote from Purina's page on flea control

"Flea collars are generally not very effective as they have a limited range of effect (around the collar)."

That might be a more compelling argument for your neighbours, and is less judgemental. If you discuss toxicity, be sure to name the problem chemicals and explain how they can affect the cat.

I really hope they will decide to let the cat stay with you. Ignore your sister. Your mum will be a far better judge of the situation. You do need to come to some arrangement soon. Good luck with talking to them.

Thanks columbine and mwallance056 Iwould love to keep the cat
but actually i wanted to tell them that I took the
collar on her not if I
wanted to keep her but thank you for your support
but hopefully I will ask them one day

Mwallance056 thank you , but it would kind of
be the responsibility of a neighbour to take care of
a street cat so its totally fine!!!

Thank you columbine and mwallance 056

Glad to hear she's doing so well. It sounds like, at this rate, you may find yourself as the cat's owner...whatever anyone says. Ultimately, if she is determined to live with you, the only way for her so called owners to stop it is to keep her as an indoor cat themselves ;) She clearly thinks she's your cat

Agreed. And the reason she sleeps so much is that all cats sleep so much, unless they're seriously ill. In fact, a cat that goes for more than two hours at a time without sleeping could develop serious problems as a result. Eighteen hours of sleep per day is not uncommon. There's a good reason that the term "cat nap" is so common.

Yes, if there were a sleeping contest (not counting hibernation and such) cats would win it paws down.

As long as you allow her to come into your house whenever she likes, and the neighbors don't allow her into their house, and she spends most of her time at your house, she is your cat, in all but name. I don't think there's any point in worrying about the name thing. You love her, she loves you, your parents are cool with you having her, these are the things that matter. Worst case scenario: the neighbors decide to assert their rights and start actually taking care of her.
