Brown stewing beef, onions, sweet and hot peppers, mix in hot and sweet paprika as well as garlic, cover with water and simmer for 90 - 120 minutes. Thicken gravy with tomato paste and/or sour cream. Serve over egg noodles.

* worked at the animal shelter in the a.m.
* emptied waste paper baskets and put the trash can out for collection tomorrow
* clicker training session with Mogli
* researched a course I might be interested in taking later this year

it's still too early to start my day here -- 4am. i'm up bringing the house back up to a more reasonable temp/burning a couple loads of slab wood in the wood stove, then back to bed. it's -4 degrees F here tonight!!!
  • dump the wood stove ash pan, then add a load of slab wood to bring the temp up again
  • give snick her sub-q's, then give snick and jasper their breakfasts, then make my breakfast
  • i've got a "to do" list for todays busy day which includes laundry, cleaning, snow shoveling, the usual things (ie, washing the dishes, scooping litter boxes, taking the trash out, bringing in the newspaper), moving a lot of firewood, and assorted other small things to get done

I know. It's cold here, too, but not as cold as where you are. We could actually feel the house cooling down last night. And that wind just roared around the house. We had some squalls, too, which combined with the wind, gave us some white-out conditions. Didn't last long, just enough to dust the roads again. We are to get snow tonight into tomorrow (Friday) morning. Not much, according to our local weatherweenies. Under a wind chill advisory today, but I think this is supposed to be the worst of it, although we're not getting out of the freezer until Sunday or Monday.

So, anyway....Rick is back to bowling tonight after having two weeks off for the holidays. He's bowling early, so while he's gone:
  • Scoop the boxes
  • A quick vacuum about the living room and kitchen
And I think that will be it.

@Winchester -- when i'm asleep at night i can feel the house cooling down too, and it wakes me up. it was a rough night last night, getting up much more often to add wood to the wood stove. i did go to bed earlier than usual, because i knew i'd lose some sleep over the night.

part of the problem here is that this house needs better insulation, which i have planned in years to come. it's just going to take time to be able to get the whole house better insulated.

did you have steady but light snow there? we had a constant snow but very fine -- like the equivalent of a misty rain, but in snow form.

the wind chill advisory here ends at 10am. i don't plan on going outside until after 10am.

it's sunday here too, when the frigid weather returns to just cold. i'm so looking forward to that.

It was very light snow, although at times, when that wind really gusted yesterday afternoon, we couldn't see the building across the road from our complex; it was just white. Fortunately, that started in just after I came back inside from my walk!
Most of the time, it was like a mist, only snow. Like what you're describing.

We keep the electric blanket on high throughout the night, largely because of the cats. I'm a burrower, so I tend to burrow down into the covers and the covers are right around my nose. Molli doesn't like all the covers over her, just the comforter and she's happy. Sometimes, Molli gets too warm and she'll get up and go down to the foot of the bed and sleep there. Muffin, OTOH, is like me as she likes to burrow down in as deep as she can. If the bedcovers slip off of her, she'll let me know it by meowing at me and then I'll just tuck her back in again. And she'll drop back off to sleep. She's pretty much staying in bed and under the covers all night long.

We have electric heat throughout the house. The bedroom register hardly ever comes on and that room stays fairly warm most of the time. The last couple of nights, though, we've heard the bedroom register click on, so we know it's cold. And when I went to the basement this morning to use the treadmill, I flipped the curtain back to look outside and the windows were frosted. I'm wearing sweatpants and a heavy sweatshirt when I'm on the treadmill.

No woodstove here. My parents had an old, antique cookstove that they used to keep their house warm. It did a great job. Dad put vents in the floor in the kitchen, which was right above the stove. Even on the coldest days, my mom would walk around in shorts because the house was so warm! I loved visiting them because that was the one place I knew would be nice and toasty all the time.

Wind chill advisory here ends at 1:00 pm. I checked and, at noon, we will be at 15 degrees F with a wind chill of 1 F. So that's not actually quite that bad. I keep looking outside and the trees are whipping and the flags are whipping around the poles. I'm not sure I have the guts to go outside in it, though.

My MIL called me this morning. She wanted to go to the grocery store and she and my FIL were having a spat over it. He didn't want her to go out in the cold, esp as she is getting over a nasty cold. They decided to call me to see what I thought.
I asked her if it was vital that she go and she said, "Wellllllll, no, I guess not." I told her to keep her butt at home and that Rick and I would do some shopping for her when we're out and about on Saturday morning....that's still time enough to take advantage of the sales she wants. She wasn't real happy about it, but agreed. Honestly, if she were to fall in the parking lot and if nobody saw her fall for a while, it wouldn't take long for her to freeze in this weather. And she is recovering from that cold. I thought it was ridiculous. She was not amused.
  • And to keep on track, I will add that I have to look through the bathroom closet to try to find Rick's beard trimmer tonight. He says it's in there, but he can't find it. I didn't think the closet was that disorganized, but evidently it is.
He texted me this morning and asked if I'd take a gander for it for him.

Snowing again this morning, so Dear Richard brought me into work. We were supposed to get an inch of snow, but that was two inches ago. We'll see where we end up after it stops.

The only thing we're planning on tonight is some shopping with my sister. Then when we come home, I'm going to bed!

that's the way it was here too -- the wind was gusting and at times it was almost like "whiteout" conditions here.

i use a (electric) heated mattress pad -- that thing is heavenly. i've always said that i like to sleep very warm, but "a burrower" is more accurate.  snick is a burrower too, she loves warm and curls up under the covers behind my knees in bed. jasper is a snuggler, but that boy is a heating pad -- he's toasty warm all the time. if i'm feeling cold, jasper will come lay on my lap and make me feel warm.

my parents had an old "ben franklin" wood stove in their house, a pot belly style wood stove. there was a story behind that wood stove too. my dad was driving somewhere, through a more rural type area, and saw that old wood stove sitting in a field on someones property. he stopped and asked the owner about it, and bought the pot belly wood stove for $25. my dad stored that wood stove in garage or barn for years, then moved it into the house and had chimney pipe installed/attached to it so it could be used. it put out quite a good amount of heat, though it wasn't completely airtight -- even though dad had it re-caulked (not really caulk, but some substance that did the same as caulk but for old cast iron stoves) more than once.

i'm glad you were able to talk your MIL out of going out to shop in that kind of weather. many/most people don't think about that kind of situation happening -- falling and being hurt, and no one finding you for hours or longer. but it can happen. i think of that kind of thing often because no one would miss me for quite some time (well, the cats definitely would, but couldn't do anything to help me). that's why i won't climb up on a ladder and get onto the roof or clean out the gutters myself. i don't have a cell phone, so couldn't call anyone to help me if i fell.

today i got a few things done --
  • dumped the wood stove ash pan, then added more wood to the wood stove
  • gave snick and jasper their breakfasts, then made mine
  • washed the dishes, scooped litter boxes, took out the trash, and brought in the newspaper
  • took an hour and a half nap -- needed that after my busy day yesterday, and jasper joined me for the nap
  • called my mom, our weekly chat

I got up this morning and fed the cats. I tried to stay up, but was too pooped, so went back to bed. Now am awakened again and I feel better this time around. Even a couple of hours of extra sleep can help sometimes. It's really cold today, although the sun is shining. Our high will be 15 F.
  • Must scoop the boxes
  • Rick and I are running errands this morning: banking, the mall (I need new socks and I like Gold Toe black socks), and we must do a bit of grocery shopping for Rick's mother.
  • I may do a bit of cleaning this afternoon, just vacuuming and some dusting
