I'm excited to announce our very own Feline Nutrition Month starting today!

Nutrition is the cornerstone of good health and it is up to us to decide on the best possible way to feed our cats, according to their needs and our abilities. Knowledge is key in deciding on the best kinds of food for your cat, and we're here to provide you with the latest information about creating a balanced and healthy diet for Kitty.

We'll be covering topics such as choosing the right cat food; how much to feed; how to read cat food labels; what makes good cat food, canned or dry, and many more, in new guides to added to our articles section. We'll also have feeding-themed contests and we'll try to generally pay more attention to this aspect of caring for our furbabies this month.

Without further ado, I'm happy to present you with a thoroughly revised version for this article -

Choosing The Right Food for Your Cat

Written by Laurie Goldstein, our very own @LDG  this is actually a new article, completely replacing the one we had before (with the same title). More detailed, and longer, this guide now has two parts (scroll through the first to reach the link to Part 2).

I'd like to thank Laurie for her invaluable contribution to the site in general, and to writing and re-writing nutrition articles for this month. She's done an absolutely amazing job and I can't begin to imagine just how many cats will benefit from this project (in addition to the numerous cats she's helped through TCS over the years!)

Thank you, Laurie!

For many years I researched canine and feline nutrition.  I found unless your pet has to have a specific diet for medical issues the very best diet is a varied one with common sense.  Canine and feline kibble has come a long way over many many years but during the processing part of the food many nutrients are lost or made "less potent" because of the high heating process.  For my Persian River, I do leave him dry food out all day, I also give him a morning and afternoon snack of some veggies and meat with added feline vitamins from The Wholistic Pet, I love their products.  He also gets Greenies as snacks or "good boy" treats for his teeth.  A variety in diet is the best provided the right vitamins are given. One type of food given all the time does not give a complete and balanced diet no matter what they claim.

Welcome to TCS!

This is just an announcement thread, so I thought I'd mention there are always interesting nutritional discussions going on in the Feline Nutrition forum. I think the topic of variety vs. feeding the same food would be great for a new thread there, so you're more than welcome to start one!

Also, we'd love to see your reviews of some of the cat foods you've tried in our reviews section. Greenies is definitely listed, I remember adding that one back when we had the cat treats reviews contest.
Let me know if you need help finding anything there. If it's not listed, I'll be happy to add it! Thank you!

One last installment for Feline Nutrition Month -

Choosing the Right Dry Cat Food

I know many of our members don't like feeding dry, but sometimes you just have to. When that happens, know how to do it the right way!
