hugs.gif And an odd virus too. In fact tonight, her eye lid looked really good and no watery eye. It seems to get better and look better then if she rubs her eye, she irritates it again. There are times during the day it looks great and at other times I will notice it watering a bit and red. It really is taking a long time to go away, but you are right, slow is better than no improvement at all. wink.gif

Back on an eye ointment sniffle.gifshame.gif My poor angel's eye has taken a turn for the worse..... Very, very red and inflammed eye lid - a bit more watering and she was starting to rub her eye more irritating the tissue around the eyes and actually causing some bleeding. I am so upset for my amidala.gif and have been spoiling her rotten today. She is on Poly/Neo/Dex ointment - has a steroid. I am saying HUGE HUGE prayers asking that her eye will return to normal. This eye has been a problem for over two month's now. Such a worry .... sigh.gif She is still getting Lysine - but it doesn't seem to be doing it's job. Will keep you posted, of course. May bring her to Dr. Mark for a second opinion - though I have to wonder if this is a chronic problem right now that will require oral Pred for a bit. Perla thanks you all for your vibes and so does her momma heartpump.gifhugs.gif

OH Lauren, you really have had your hands full. hugs.gifhugs.gifhugs.gif

Sending mega, mega vibes for Perla that the topical ointment with the steroid will FINALLY do the trick! vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifheartpump.gif

I am really fuming right now - BECAUSE - I just read something today about the Herpes virus and Prednisone that confirms that this Herpes virus WAS brought on by the distemper vaccine (which she should have NOT been given that day - if the vet knew she was on Pred.) WHY didn't the vet know this dontknow.gifmad.gif....

Perla was in to see the vet last mid-October along with Perkins for their severe chin acne. I was getting worried it was ringworm, if you remember smile.gif. The culture's were negative. This vet (who I have never seen before in that particular office AND will not see again) put Perla and Perkins on Prednisone. The chins started clearing within a week on the Pred so I started spacing out the dosages and they also went down to 2.5 mg. a couple of times a week. Perla..... developed that weepy eye in November (makes sense now - from being on the Pred....) Unfortunately, I didn't know what I know now and at the time I didn't think much of the weepy eye and after talking to the vet on the phone about it - used the Neo-poly drops I had on hand. Then, Perla received her vaccine beginning of December. She still had the watery eye AND was still getting the Pred. twice a week for the chin. WHY WHY did the vet not ask me if she was still on Pred? AND WHY did the vet give her vaccine with a watery eye? I did tell this vet that she has a watery eye and should she get the vaccine. But didn't mention about the Pred because I honestly didn't think that would have been a problem - mad.gif This vet knew they were on the Pred recently and did not ask me if I was still giving that to them. Well, It is BAD to give a vaccine to a cat who is on Pred - and a Herpes kitty even worse - it is sealing the deal for a full blown herpes virus to erupt. Prednisone suppresses the immune system in the first place - that is WHY she got the weepy eye in November. She should have been off the Pred for at least two to three week's before she received the vaccine. I am SO very upset about this - and am going to call the head vet over there tomorrow and speak to him about this. I feel SO bad because I don't know if her eye will ever clear up - I feel awful about it. crying.gif I am desperately trying to figure out how this has happened to her - I don't know if I am going overboard here because Perkins (on Pred at the time too) and Presley didn't get the virus - BUT both of those boys did get a little sick too after the vaccine.

She has been on the Neo/Poly/Dex ointment for four days now. Yes - there is improvement in the swelling and redness of the eye lid - but it is watering like crazy again. I also am disgusted because the head vet over there (on the phone the other day) said he was trying to avoid the oral pred. if at all possible for this eye infection. BUT IF I were to give her oral Pred AND this IS Herpes - that will open her up to an even more severe viral infection by suppressing her immune system. What is he thinking..... I have to call and find out. I know I am not the best...... Internet DVM laughing02.gif and sometimes it is to my demise - but I can't help but research things like this. I just want answer's.

I just want her eye better and normal - I feel so badly for my little amidala.gif I think it is time that she see Dr. Mark - Pipsqueak's vet. In fact, I think all the cats will be going to Dr. Mark from now on. The only reason I was using this other vet - was for my TNRs. He did Perla, Perkins, Presley, Walden and Wendall's neuters. I just thought, well, I found a good vet and thought I would just keep using them for the kitten's.

Thanks for listening to my rant - I just really want Perla's eye to completely heal. I have to keep her on the steroid ointment for another seven days. I surely hope that it starts to clear - but I have my doubts. sigh.gif

I am SO sorry Perla is still dealing with this!!!!!! I do think the vaccine exacerbated the problem. frown.gif But I'm not so sure the pred compounded it. 2.5mg 2-3x a week is a very, very, very low dose, and here's why I say I'm not sure the pred compounded the problem.

I just had the chat with my vet yesterday about prednisolone, because of Lazlo. She said that 5mg (his dose) is not a "low" dose - but it is an anti-inflammatory dose, (at his 12 pounds), NOT an immuno-suppressive dose. So now that the chemo is done, even if we keep him on the pred (she's calling the oncologist to find out what he wants to do), I don't need to worry about HPP raw foods once their systems have adjusted to raw - not because of the pred.

So on that low of a dose - for how long before the vaccine? - it shouldn't be immuno-suppressive.

But at this point? You may want to find a cat eye specialist, Lauren. With the more specialized knowledge, they may have options/solutions the vets just haven't found yet.

Lauren, don't beat yourself up for not mentioning the Pred to Perla's vet---you didn't go to vet. school.  Beat up on the vet---he did go to vet. school laughing02.gif

I know how you feel, I've done the "if only I had....." routine myself.  You're an amazing Meowmy, and while it may be slow going, I'm sure Perla will beat whatever it is going on wiht her eye.

Gentle head skritches to your little Princess, and a (((big hug))) to you.heart.gif

Thank you, Laurie hugs.gif I just got off the phone with Dr. Sandu. He was very sorry I was so upset and felt badly. He reassured me that the PRED was NOT any where near the dosage to be Immuno-suppressive - not in the least. AND she was only getting 2.5 mg. twice a week at that point in time. So I got myself all worked up for nothing. He also said that the "oral" dose will be so small - for the anti-inflammatory response that it will not suppress her immune system either. BUT we will wait until the ten day steroid ointment treatment is done to see where we are at.

Her eye lid is definitely much better and the tissues in the eye are down a bit too. Still weepy though. YES, Laurie hugs.gif - the eye specialist would be a better option than taking her to Dr. Mark at this point for a second opinion - not that I don't think he could help - but he might be suggesting the same protocol as Dr. Sandu anyway. The Specialist at this point will have more options for us and be able to give me some hope, I am sure. biggrin.gifagree.gif

HI biggrin.gif!!!!!!!!!!!! I DO have some good news and I hope I am not jumping ahead of myself in saying so...... cross.gif KNOCK WOOD laughing02.gif BUT - her eye IS better. I finished up the steroidal ointment on Monday - yesterday. Today her eye almost looks totally normal - just a teeny bit of tearing after she eats or plays. The inner eyelids are not as red and swollen - just a teeny bit. The outer eyelid is completely normal and healed up clap.gifclap.gifclap.gifclap.gif SO the amidala.gif is on her way to a beautiful healthy eye again.... she SO deserves to be fully recovered after all of this time!!! She has been the BEST little angel for any eye medications I have had to give her. Just a total doll heartpump.gif THANKS again, friends hugs.gif, for your loving concern and support with the amidala.gif!! Perla thanks you too paw.gifwhitecat1.gif

WELL- when it rains it pours at my house..... Perla's eye is beginning to flare shame.gif It is chronically weepy, but with a flare-up it is more then just watery. I will take her to the vet again. I want her tear ducts checked this time. I am taking her to Dr. Mark for a second opinion. I also just ordered some Colloidal Silver 500 ppm. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0057ZH5Z6/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=hapcatfam-20&camp=0&creative=0&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B0057ZH5Z6&adid=1WKG90E0R8TM9835CBWP recommended by Carolina. She gave me instructions on how to dilute it and use it for her eye. I really need to get this under control. My poor little amidala.gif Perla. vibes.gifvibes.gif

I know she has herpes, but could this be related allergies at all?  Tis the season, you know  vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifthat you can nip this in the bud quickly

I do not think it allergies.... she has had this weepy eye since last November. The distemper vaccine in early December put her into a full blown Herpes virus. Her eye became very inflammed. After weeks of ointments - finally a steroidal ointment - it cleared - but still weepy ever so slightly. Another flare up is beginning. She is still getting almost 750 mg. of Lysine daily. Will increase that to 1000 mg. again. Thanks, Sally... hugs.gif

Oh, poor little Perla!  I was so surprised to get a notification for this thread; I'd hoped the little lady's eye issues were a thing of the past.

Sending loads of vibes.gifthat you can get this under control soon, Lauren.  A gentle head skritch to the Princess ( if she'll allow it, of course laughing02.gif )

HI LIBBY!!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gifhugs.gif Thank YOU.... unfortunately, Perla's eye has still be "mildly" weepy, not bad at all. Now for whatever reason, another flare up. Her appointment is tomorrow afternoon with the vet. I JUST gave her a scritch from you laughing02.gif She happens to be resting right next to me this morning on the couch while I am on the computer!!! The amidala.gif thanks you for the scritch. Although, she did give me a bit of a look....she has her limits in the "touching" and "scritching" department rolleyes.gifbluelaugh.gif

(sorry about the messed up "quote" box; I'm computer illiterate)

I hope everything goes well at the vet's today and you can somehow get the little one's issues under control.  Sending loads of vibes.gifto Perlas.

OK, now, for Perla's update. sweat.gif It is definitely a Herpetic Eye issue. Herpes virus in the eye. This could potentially be a chronic issue for life especially in times of stress. AND we all know that the amidala.gif Perla has to have things JUST SO worship.gif.... I am to apply the Neo Poly Dex drops in her eye three to four times a day. That will be a challenge with her. I can barely ever even pet her. Definitely likes to keep her distance but stay close, you know??!! I will manage though. Once she figures out the routine again, I think she will allow it cross.gif

Dr. Mark thinks the CS is an excellent idea clap.gifclap.gifclap.gifclap.gifclap.gif But he only wants me to blot on the outside of the eye right now. She has some odd pustules on her outer eyelids as well sigh.gif So the CS will be a great benefit to that part of the condition. AFTER the ten days of the steroidal drops, then I can start the diluted CS drops in the eye.

ALSO - if anyone knows anything about Zithromax for Herpetic eyes in cat's - please let me know. I could try that if the drops do not clear the eye or the CS does not clear the eye. So in a few week's. Doc says that he learned at a conference that Azithromycin (Zithromax). We will not go there unless nothing else works. It is a powerful antibiotic with some pretty scary side effects. sigh.gif Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks...... hugs.gif

Gotta love Dr. Mark! hugs.gifhearthrob.gif

I'm sorry, Lauren, that this could be an ongoing problem. I guess we got Lucky with Flowerbelle. agree.gifcross.gif

Come on amidala.gif Perla - let mommy give you the drops!!!!!!!!!!!!! vibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifvibes.gifrub.gif

Poor Perla!  I've had to use ointments on kitties' eyes before, but can't imagine trying to get any of them to hold still for drops.  I hope the Lady Perla co-operates for you, Lauren.  Sending you and the little one loads of vibes.gif that the drops do the trick.
