Potential Purina One Cat Food Problem

Thats the trouble with upgrading food. If they don't like it, you are stuck with a costly bag of nothing, or can.

I have one cat who will only eat kibbles and no wet. No matter what. So he gets what ever he likes. That is what I mean about the junk food junkies at my house. Purina with its sugar. I saw a small pet store that I can start buying better can, atleast. See which one wins. A new dry will have to wait.

I have a very, very finicky eater - Lucky. In my experience, even her, can eat any dry - as long as the switch is done veeeeery slowly - and I am saying slowly. Her transitions don't take me the usual 1 week to 10 days; they take up to a month; but they work.... have worked every time. She is only on ProPlan now, which I am well aware of the lack of quality (not the worst, but no way not the best) because she needed a hairball food after she went through a blockage. On that occasion, she was not eating period; after several days of syringe/force-feeding, I let her pick a dry from several foods.... And that's what she chose. It has worked for her hairballs, so I have not changed.... I will now. :nod:
I know it will be a drag - she is as finicky as it comes..... but it can be done.... With dry it can.... At least I have always been able to do so.... And when I tell you she is finicky.... you better believe it :nod:
As far as wet, I have never had luck with her - unless I syringe-feed her, she will not eat. All my cats eat excellent (ZiwiPeak) wet, but no matter what the quality, nasty, good, bad, excellent - she just HATES wet.

. Yes - Perla has been on clavamox from getting a terrible virus from her distemper vaccine

..... Never again. She kept her food down this morning and I pray this keeps up for later too. We are delaying going up North now till early tomorrow morning. I can't leave her if she is that sick again later, she will need to be boarded at the vet then or come with us. Her temp. was normal 101.2, she is eating, drinking and acting normal this morning. :cross: that it keep's up for her afternoon meal. She happily ate up the Stella/Chewey's raw cubes this morning and no vomiting. She has not had Fancy Feast in two day's since I read about Purina products.

I wouldn't think the food itself would be causing her to "go" outside the litterbox. That is sometimes due to a UTI, or if she's not doing it often, maybe the box just isn't clean enough for her?

what i'm saying is maybe she isn't feeling well from it she has already been checked for a UTI and her box is cleaned 2-3 times a day. She has been strictly eating fancy feast and purina one canned maybe there's something going on the vet never thought to check for...?

We picked them both up all new food today, felidae, natural balance Taste of The Wild (all canned). They tried and liked the Felidae, first time they tried Felidae it struck out they wouldn't touch it.

Day two of our switch to Natural balance and all of the cats like it so far. Now...next hurdle...getting Blue to switch from Canned Friskies to Canned NB Ultra. Oh Lord help us. He is almost 15 years old and he is the epitome of "grumpy old man." LOL

Oh no! I just bought a big bag of Purina One Biscuits from the supermarket yesterday! Molly loved them. They are all the biscuits I have and it's Christmas Day tomorrow, so I won't be able to get her any more biscuits :-( we are in the UK though, I wonder if that's any different?

Our switch was a success! We just finished the 5th day and all of the cats are doing great. Blue transitioned to the canned food without an issue at all (YAY!!) and it makes me feel so good knowing that it is a better food for him anyway! The dry food does not seem to be bothering my sensitive tummies...yet. Let's hope it stays that way. Right now, I am still mixing their food, but we are down to very little of their old Purina food and mostly the Natural Balance. I feel good about the switch. Thank you all for the valuable information and the major "head's up!" on the food issues with Purina. I have done lots of research lately and it is amazing to me just how many foods Purina makes! Kit and Kaboodle, Meow Mix, Cat Chow, Purina One, Purina One Beyond...then on to the wet foods - Friskies, Fancy Feast. Unbelievable!

My dh works as a Reliability and Design Engineering Mgr for a manufacturing company (appliances, not food!) and we were discussing how many, many companies do this type of thing. For instance...when you run out to buy an appliance with a brand name, did you know that the majority of their stuff is made to standard by an "off brand" factory? Many times, the brand name appliance will be sitting right beside the off brand appliance in a store and folks will choose the namebrand thinking that means it is "better" and that is not necessarily true. I learn something new everyday! LOL

Gets worst..... Apparently about 80% of the pet food here in the US is manufactured by 3 companies - which is why over 100 brands got affected in that 2007 recall....... Not all these private label companies have the machinery to manufacture the food - so they hire the large companies, who have a basic formula to make the food for them.... And there you have it - when a big problem hits, it can become a monstrosity. Which is the biggest reason I am switching mine to raw - do not like that - at all.
I think every pet owner should watch this video - it is not about raw.... it is about the pet food industry...... it is very eye opening. If for anything, It teaches us better ways to keep our babies healthier - i.e. rotations, and such.

I've been reading up on the Purina One episode. It looks like the only type recalled (and it has been recalled) is the maturity.

I read this thread and burst out crying. My cats have been throwing up on and off for months. I posted about it - and about trying out various dry foods thinking that was the culprit - in the cat nutrition forum.

Anyway, we had a foster kitty in the summer (Raymond AKA Clancey) who took sick at Labor Day. He was throwing up this whitish, foamy stuff and we took him to the emergency room. $500 later, they said he might have an obstruction but couldn't be sure without surgery. As I was facing surgery of my own and was not sure what the outcome would be, we decided to let him go. The thing is, he'd been eating Proplan (wet and dry) and Fancy Feast since we'd started fostering him.

Four of my cats split a can of Fancy Feast every morning and night. They've been the ones throwing up, so now I realize it may not have been the dry food after all. (I have switched them all successfully to Merrick's BG, which I free feed). I will now make a trip to the store and get some Merrick's wet as well.

The irony is, I had just purchased a stock of Fancy Feast at Petsmart with a gift certificate. I just came back from taking it all back. The manager said he hadn't heard of any recall or other issues and I didn't want to argue with him. But I figure they will probably keep any issues quiet for as long as they can.

I did get two cans of Blue Buffalo but only two ate it. The other turned up their noses. We will figure this out but I am so glad I read this thread! Thanks!

The reason you havnt heard of recallS is because the only Purina product that has been recalled is PURINA ONE 7+ MATURTY and its a limited recall. Don't panic!!!

Yeah, well, before recalls happen, people have to report the problems.

So if anyone has been having a problem, please report it to both the company and the FDA.

Recalls are almost always preceded by problems - that's how they figure out the product needs to be recalled.

The fact that recalls are not there, doesn't mean that there are not problems.... There are reports for other Purina problems, including FF, and Purina One.
Keep in mind, recalls are not immediate - it is not like a few cats get sick, and the product is off the shelves..... That is not to say that it CAN happen, and a lot of cats can get sick before a recall happen.

To Ondine - I am so sorry you are going through all this :hugs:

If they do get better on the new food :cross: and you have reasons to Believe it was Fancy Feast that caused their troubles, by all means call the FDA.

The weird thing is, none of them is sick - just throwing up occasionally. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to it until I realized it was only the four who ate the FF. Raymond was different in that he was a kitten and hadn't eaten anything but the kitten Proplan or FF.

He got sick within a few days of his starting to eat the FF. He would ignore his kitten Proplan and run from bowl to bowl, scarfing down the other cat's FF. None of them cared because they'd go eat his Proplan.

I will try to report it but because I have no idea of the lot numbers, it may not help anything. I think I'll just stick with Merrick's. They are all eating it and so far, so good.

Just wanted to add that Mr. Jinx is in love with HALO brand wet cans, so I switch that with Natural Balance, also something he enjoys. The HALO small cans are at Whole Foods and range from 89 cents on a good sale day to $1.19ish on a regular day, which is *nearly* the same price as other supermarket brands. It's a really high quality food and whole veggies for not too much, just in case anyone is looking. OH - and if you go online you can try two cans for free at their website.
