Hurricane coming our way:( - Page 4

Well; it's raining here! I got up around 9:30 this morning after not falling asleep till after 5...and sleeping fitfully after that. Basically the guy on the radio said it's gonna rain till tomorrow afternoon. The heaviest for us is overnight.

Keep us in your prayers. Its so hard to feel isolated; especially with a little one.

The good news is that my neighbors got a generator so they will be able to get water after the storm; should we need any more. I'm still praying we are far enough inland that we don't need that at all.

Is it tomorrow yet?

All I can say is I know how you feel.

I am posting this photo since someone told me you would all appreciate my sense of humor. So here it goes:

Yes that was on my front lawn yesterday .

Things are starting to get a little scary here. This morning when I woke up I checked everything and thought we were only going to get a little storm, but the winds are really picking up.

Here's a video of the wind & rain I just shot a few minutes ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ83mpAFIRo - sorry, I always forget to hold my iPhone in landscape view when taking a video.

I took another video about a half hour before and the wind noise in the background was 1/3 of the noise in the above video. I don't have to work my second job tonight thank goodness because the store lost power - so glad my manager got to go home. I still have power, though. Hope it sticks! I filled up the bathtub with water and have my flashlights, candles, etc.

EVERYONE STAY SAFE PLEASE!

Thanks! My grandparents have a second house in Wilmington and I used to spend so much time down there when I was young that it almost feels like I grew up there. Hoping everyone is all right

We due to have at least 10" (yes, you read that right!) of rain tonight and early tomorrow. We've already had several heavy rains the past 2 weeks, and that will be on top of that amount.

Should have built that ark last week!

This will be a very weird weather week here--first, an earthquake, now a hurricane.

Where are you? I'm in Richmond. I totally agree about the weather! Although I reckon an earthquake doesn't count as weather

I took a video last year of Earl as it nailed us. Was only a tropical storm at this point but as you can see around 1:25, the winds were pretty darn strong. Love the trees being so close. I couldn't sleep because they kept hitting the window. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgP33_LVMTc&

That was Buddy's first real storm and he wasn't even scared. He sat there in the window through most of it. He just didn't like the rain hitting him.

Irene is expected to miss us for the most part, although we are getting a good dumping of rain tomorrow and wind gusts around 60km/h (roughly 40mph). Nothing serious though. Hope everyone is staying safe down south.

That is toooo funny!! Love it!!

We did have the power flash here but it came right back on. I think it might be because just up the road about 10 miles or so they had an outage that came back on right around then.

DH and I have been folding and organizing laundry.

Glad you liked the photo . I am also glad you did not lose power. Right now I am just playing cat monitor .

All four are inside and two that are indoor/outdoor are very PISSED about the thus far 30 hour lock up.

Well, certain areas of our county are recommended to evacuate due to the potential for flooding. The county earlier this morning recommended the evacuation of the RV Parks. Yeah - that's helpful. Where exactly is everyone supposed to go? Anyone planning to camp for the weekend cancelled, and RV parks for 600 miles west of here are full. The owners of this one did tell all non-seasonal campers to evacuate, and they've all been packing up and rolling.

We did get the crates ready (the car is already packed with any necessary supplies - it always is) just in case... but the only place we'd go is up to the front office. Which, quite frankly, looks less safe than our RV.

Right now they're still projecting it to be a category 1 when it rolls up here, but hopefully they're wrong and it'll just be technically a tropical storm with high winds and a lot of rain. We were in a storm just last summer that dumped 10" in 24 hours with wind gusts up to 60mph. So hopefully county fears are overblown.

Obviously we put the awnings up.

Hmm, well we officially have damage! I am so thankful for how this turned out.

A huge tree next to my apartment fell over and would have landed directly on my car if there hadn't been another tree in the way, which is currently supporting it. (I'm going to go move my car now.)

Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFrwRSVKVN0

Sorry for the heavy breathing haha, I was a little upset.
Here's a pic from a few minutes ago, after we moved our cars:

I'm just hoping the smaller tree that caught the one that fell continues to hold it up!
Bah, I spoke too soon. Nova Scotia is now under a tropical storm warning for tomorrow. Wind gusts up to 100kmh (just over 60mph). Yay!
We've started to get very heavy rain and high winds already. This was supposed to happen more overnight. Now, Irene is about 230 miles south of us. It may not be very good when she gets here, if this is the prelude!

Where are you MargeCat? We've been getting rain off and on all day, but no winds yet.

WOW Anna - good thing your car wasn't there!
I've just been reading my newspaper about the hurricane and I just want to send more vibes everyones way.xx

It WAS there!!!!! LOL! It was right under the branches of the tree, which are suspended in the air because the smaller tree is supporting it. I posted a vid that I took of the tree before I moved my car. Craziness, y'all, and there are several more hours to come from what I'm told. I'm just so thankful I still have power. It flickers every 15 minutes or so but hasn't shut off yet.
Hope it stays on. I didn't watch the vid because I've got terrible bandwidth right now. We took down the cell booster, and our only internet is the USB air cars.

The rain has deffinitely picked up here and the wind too. We had a 15 minute long tornado warning; but now looking at the map I'm not quite sure why because it wasn't even headed our direction. Mooch and Noodles did not appreicate being haluled into the closet with a very excited 1 1/2 year old. DH let them out; I better not need to catch them again. I think we basically have 12 more hours of heavy rain expected. We've lost a lot of leaves off one tree and a few small branches.

I'm ready to wake up and have it be tomorrow already! Enough is enough!!
I just saw this picture someone posted on facebook from Wilmington. The tree fell and got caught on power lines and left the car unscratched. Can you say L U C K Y ?!

I'm located near Philadelphia, PA.

It's REALLY coming down now! And it's even windier.

Can you believe that some places near here are supposed to get over 15" of rain?!?!

We're well-prepared, though. I bought a ton of cat food and litter yesterday, and some more preps today--I didn't really need to, but I just wanted to get out of the house one last time! I have everything in those orange Home Depot ("Homer buckets") just in case water comes in the house or we get evacuated after the storm (that can happen). I have a couple of changes of clothing, sturdy shoes, rain gear, toiletries, trash bags, flashlight, plastic cutlery, etc. in them. The canned cat food is in a smallish rolling suitcase, along with 6 foil lasagne pans (dollar store). These make great emergency, disposable kitty litter boxes. I have OUR canned human food in a Homer bucket. I have an empty rock salt bucket (like the Homers) that is allocated for toilet usage only (I wouldn't want to store even canned food in an empty rock salt bucket--just in case of the chemicals). I have a belly bag and a small backpack to carry valuables, keys, blood sugar snacks (I'm a diabetic), etc.

Those Homer buckets are great, BTW. The lids snap on tightly, and they are only about $5.00. They are easy to carry, and you can stuff a lot of things in them for an emergency kit. Each teen or adult could carry 2, which means you can take a lot of things with you. In a shelter, they can also be a table, a nightstand by your cot/sleeping bag, and a stool. You can carry water in them, and you should also slate a separate one as a toilet, just in case--throw in trash bags for liners, and rolls of toilet paper (you can squash the t.p. to save space). I've sometimes been in situations where we had to use one for a toilet!

Two of my poor cats are terrified right now. The other 7 don't seem to notice the weather. Poor Leo has been shadowing me all day, and his sister, Little Miss, has been hunkering down in the foyer, where she goes when it rains heavily.

That is awesome, your post had a lot of great information!

It hasn't started here.... yet... we have the generators gassed up and in place, food cooked that can be eaten cold, 18gallon totes filled with water candles and flashlights at the ready. We are under hurricane warnings, and not to far away is under hurrican AND tornado warnings. Not looking forward to this.

I hope its all over early enough for enough clean up to happen by 5am Monday morning so I can make it the 45min up to the hospital.... I'm scheduled for surgery at 6am Monday morning! (I'm having my gallbadder removed)

they just issued a Tornado watch for Long Island. Oh goody.
I hope you all stay safe during this tumultuous weather. You are in my thoughts and prayers!

I finally lost power. Super. Talk to y'all later!
I spent hours today trying to sand bag my back door from the roof top into my living room.......I hope it works! There is only a 5 inch lip before it starts flooding and I know the drain won't be able to take so much rain!
Can you believe the idiot bar below me is open??!! Not only are they acting like this is no big deal, keeping people (very few) from safety, but also getting them liquored up before they go back outside! IDIOTS!
Oh I believe it!! Crazy people! There is a restaurant down here doing the same thing I saw. My ex-stepbrother is having a hurricane party. But he lives in Boston so it's not quite there yet....just an excuse to drink.
I believe it! They were supposed to evacuate in Hoboken - to help, they made it mandatory that anyone with a liquor license not sell liquor after 6:00pm this evening, and even taxis aren't allowed to be driving.
