about eating meat that still has hair attached . Long ago I had a cat that used to catch and eat rabbits from the field next door. He never had hairballs. Or any bowel problems. Fleas are what I had to deal with. But still worth it.
It does not have to cost a lot. If you want to do something similar and are good at DOY you can start installing narrow shelving near the ceiling. this is not space that we would normally use but cats love to get up there. Personally I think the little darlings already think they rule our lives...
Do they have feeling in the back feet? if so try massaging them every time you look at the little cuties. If no feeling then you may well be right. But from the pinkness in the picture I would say they have good blood supply so hopefully be OK. I know you would already have thought to check with...

do you have space to leave the carrier out with the door open? this way they wont get upset if you have to use it. Just throw a towel over it and it becomes an extra place they can lie in.

All good suggestions. One extra idea, if you think it might be a smell then get a bucket of warm water and make a diluted bleach solution, I think its one teaspoon to one liter of water and wipe down all the doorways. make sure you don't have it stronger then that as its harmful to cats.
I've just been reading how people use squirt bottles, and I hate to say this, but I agree to not using them. seems its a tool that can too easily be misused, so avoiding it is the best course.
