I agree with Ondine. They use it to hold the pate together/thicken it. I'm sure they are aware of the controversy around carrageenan and figured they would throw something out there that points towards it being beneficial.
I would think that cats would derive some of the same benefits as we do from oils, being that they are fats even though they can't really digest plant material. I only know this because we use coconut oil (unrefined, virgin, organic) for much of the same reasons you use EVOO and our cats LOVE...
No, I did not necessarily intend to make it that high, but her recipe as is says to remove 20-25% of the bones in the recipe. Chicken thighs are 21% ish (or so I thought) so that would make it rather high on bone as well (12-15% just rough estimate). Originally, I thought it was supposed to be...
Hopefully someone sees this. I have a question related to the Pierson recipe but I did not want to start a new thread. I was curious if I could make the food using a whole chicken and then adding in the appropriate amount of meat to balance the meat/bone content, about 1.25-1.5 times the weight...
Sorry about the delay. I put very little water in the cooker. Pretty much just enough to cover the bones, since it would not be cooking for too long. And yes, I did use the cooking water when it was finished and then adjusted the amount of "extra" water she has in her recipe. I only had to add...
Just thought I'd report back that the recipe works out great. I deboned the thighs using a boning knife and popped them into the pressure cooker. Took about an hour and a half for them to reach crumble status. I let them cool, pureed them and made the recipe exactly as Dr. Pierson has it on her...
Just thought I'd add in our experiences with this- It's a HIT! Also, the pinky mice don't bleed at all so there is no mess involved. We do this once or twice a week and afterwards both cats sleep like they are just *so* content with life.
Exactly. I don't know if you guys are familiar with Merrick's Wing-a-ling canned dog food, but it also has the mush bones in it. You can literally squish them between your fingers. And yes, I would be pureeing it very finely and then mixing it with the meat. I have no worries about it...
That is what I was thinking as well. If not for anything, I would assume that it would be much better than the bone meal, considering they would still get the marrow and stuff. Thanks for your reply! Hopefully I can get a few more opinions... If this would work, it would be SUCH a stress reliever.
Hello TCS,
I have decided to start feeding Dr. Pierson's ground recipe and after purchasing everything but the grinder ( I was going to try using the bone meal first to make sure they would eat it) I stumbled upon a dog food recipe that calls for pressure cooking an entire chicken until the...
I personally chose to go the route of getting my long haired cat used to baths. As a kitten, I gave her baths (usually just with water and pretending to rub shampoo on her) once a month. Now that she is an adult, I do it every 3-4 months and treat heavily. Se has no fear of water and behaves...
