The cat sitter came by and fixed the blinds. All is well! Thanks for letting me fret a bit.

Oh, I must have a nutmeg at all times! There is NOTHING like freshly-planed nutmeg!

LOL, salt is not a spice. Salt is a ROCK. We put it on our food. Don't ask me why. :p I'm not a huge fan of salt. I do like tiny amounts, but you can almost count the grains of salt I put on foods. I do cook with it, but I just don't care for it sprinkeld that much. Watermelon and popcorn being major exceptions. OH...and salted caramel ice cream. The salt-sweet juxtaposition is appealing.

I feel for you. I carried my first one 11 months. The doctor kept telling me I got my dates wrong. HAH! He was 8 pounds, 8 ounces, which isn't THAT big, but he was 27 INCHES LONG! And held his head up and focused at 12 hours old. I think I'd have given birth when he was packed and ready for college, but a friend threw me on the back of a Harley hard-tail and drove me down 15 miles of bad road.

The genetics of cat colors is fascinating! I love the fact that, genetically, there are only two coat colors, black and red. Everything else is a dilution, permutation, or lack of color.

I can't promise it, but it is quite rare for a cat to get into trouble like that. I'm glad she's found something else to play with now!

Since I will only be checking the Health forum breifly tomorrow, let me take this time to say

Oh my! It doesn't sound entirely safe to carry a baby that long!
I'm sure about Aedan's due date. The first month after I went off the birth control, my period was 3 days late and I got a positive test. When I started bleeding, I went to get checked out and the test was negative. It was a slightly odd period so it was likely a very early miscarriage. Then, I started showing a few symptoms a week before my next period was due and got a positive test 2 days before it would have come. I was paying pretty close attention since we were trying.
I was actually doing some research and found that only around 50% of pregnancies survive. A lot end in early miscarriages without the woman ever even knowing she was pregnant. I thought it was an interesting tidbit.

Completely random question: what food group do mushrooms fall under? They're not a fruit or vegetable - they're a fungus. I've always wondered but never really bothered to ask.
Mushrooms are neither vegetable nor fruit, since they are not technically a plant. You are correct about them being a fungus, and that is their classification.

It is in the vegetable category. Since the categories are not quite botanical, this also allows for tomatoes to be a vegetable as well as sweet corn (which is actually a grain).

My son and I get into some really strange conversations which results in us looking up a lot of weird stuff.
Mushrooms was one at one time.

Why are Christmas and New Years the only two holidays that have an Eve before them? Is it because people celebrate both days?

Okay, let me make this clear up front: I do NOT recommend this!!! It's very dangerous; DON'T DO IT, not even at full-term!!! (Is that emphatic enough for everyone?)

My late mother-in-law had rheumatic fever as a child, which resulted in a leaky (I think) heart valve; she was physically very fragile for the rest of her life. Her mother had some kind of minor job in a hospital and therefore considered herself to be a medical expert, which is probably why my MIL wasn't treated for the strep throat that caused the rheumatic fever. Anyway, when my MIL got pregnant her mother was very worried about her health, and was basically convinced that it would be dangerous for her to carry her babies to full term. MIL had three pregnancies, each of which ended somewhat prematurely, probably due to her mother slipping a large dose of a laxative into her food and/or drink (and knowing her she probably stole the laxative from her employer). My Roger was the youngest of the three. The oldest is Roger's sister, and the middle child didn't make it; he died of Hyaline Membrane Disease (Definition of Hyaline membrane disease). One of the reasons Roger is on dialysis now is that he was born with an undersized kidney which never matured properly; it might have done so had his birth not been premature.
* * * * * *
My mother had a lot of trouble carrying pregnancies to term; she had numerous miscarriages both before and after my birth, most of them at the early embryonic stage. But she was very in-tune with her own body. She told me that she always knew she was pregnant as soon as it happened, even before missing a period, and her doctor absolutely believed her. Because of the history of miscarriage she'd call her doctor immediately and say "I'm pregnant," and he'd say "Go to bed. I'll have your medicine delivered." The medicine was DES. (Diethylstilbestrol - Wikipedia) My personal theory (no way to test it) is that for her it actually worked; I think it suppressed her fibroids long enough for her to carry me and my brothers to term. It may also be the reason I have diabetes now, and it is the reason I may have to fight with Medicare in order to get the PAP smears that I need every year for the rest of my life.

Goodness. There are all kinds of tips for kick starting labor. One is castor oil. Not doing that. It could cause the baby to have his first bm in the womb, breathe it in, and possibly die or have learning disabilities. I might try eating a boatload of pineapple or sex or whatever, but I won't do anything potentially dangerous.

My best advice is just be patient. When your body is ready, he will be born.

They aren't. Halloween is one that most people (at least in the U.S.) celebrate only on the Eve. It's actually All Hallows' Eve, and it comes before All Hallows' Day. You just don't notice it because "All Hallow's Eve" has been contracted to "Halloween," and because you don't celebrate All Hallows' Day. (All Saints' Day - Wikipedia Halloween - Wikipedia) Basically, Halloween is for most people a secular holiday; All Hallows' Day is a religious holiday.

Also, the early Christian church continued the Jewish custom of beginning the day at sundown of the previous day, and some of that has survived into the present. In some Catholic Churches, for instance, if you can't make it to mass on Sunday you can go on Saturday night and it counts as Sunday mass. By this standard, Christmas Day actually begins on Christmas Eve. The standard doesn't generally apply to New Year's Day/Eve because it's a more secular holiday.

Beyond that, Christmas and New Years are the two holidays that come at the darkest time of the year (in the Northern hemisphere), so they're the holidays that we really want to make a bit longer. And Halloween comes when the days are getting shorter and we also need something to cheer us up.

If your doctor decides that you're far enough past your due date that it's becoming dangerous for either you or the baby he or she has ways of inducing labor that are much safer. Until then, consider this a chance to learn something you're going to need a lot of once the baby is born: patience. (Don't you just love these learning opportunities that life keeps sending our way? :insertevillaugh:)

I'm great at being patient. Just not when I'm miserable and in constant pain lol. It'll all be worth it in the end. I'm right at the end now. I've made it all this time; I'll get through it. But I reserve the right to complain! Haha

I've always wondered about it and I've asked several people. You're the only one who gave a very detailed and complete explanation. Thank you.

I use a bit of salt while cooking but not much extra. My mom eats a ton of salt. Since a lot of salt can cause high blood pressure, my mom jokes that she has to eat it or she'd be dead. I inherited my low blood pressure from my mother. I tell her I don't think it works that way.

Another two or three more weeks won't kill you. Mother Nature had a reason for pregnancy to be as long as it is or we would have a pouch like a kangaroo where baby could develop a little more before being let out into the cold cruel world. Most babies quiet down at this stage anyway, getting ready for the big push and turning over if they have not done so yet. Enjoy being as lazy as you can now, get as much sleep as possible as you will be missing a lot later. These last few weeks will pass faster than you think now, suddenly you will remember all the things you have not done yet or that you think need to be done RIGHT NOW! They don't, they can wait or someone else can do them for you. And yes, you have the right to complain so do it. No time like the present.

I need to check that out. I've always known it as All Hallows' Eve and then Day of the Dead on Nov. 1st. At least, most people in AZ celebrate it that way.
