This is what I think. Now I know several men that love cats so I don't believe this is true for all men, and I don't think it's an inherent need to control things, I think it's a norm of our society that little boys are taught to control things and little girls are taught to love things. I actually find this whole discussion interesting as I was just talking to a friend about this the other night. I read once that often men dislike cats because they have an inherent need to control things, and cats resist being controlled and always assert their independence. That's why men are generally dog people and women are generally cat people. Don't know how true that is, but thought it was interesting anyway.
