We're working on plans for our new kitchen addition...we're planning to start construction on the addition next spring....a 2 -1/2 car garage with the kitchen above that, so it's going to be a fairly large eat-in country kitchen. I love to cook, so I'd like to have enough room to move around in. People seem to congregate in our kitchen and, when we have dinners and parties, everybody always seems to want to help with things. We all have a great time at our house.
The sink and cabinets will be on a north-facing wall with the kitchen table at the southern side in front of large windows. There's a fireplace on the west wall next to the entranceway going into the living room; the fireplace will also be seen from the living room as well as the kitchen. There will be French doors at the entrance to the kitchen from the living room.
I would like to have a bay window at the sink area (northern end). A rather large window and I'm willing to give up some cabinet space (because there will be cabinets in the island, too) to have the room for the window. The north side will not have sunlight until late afternoon, when the sun gets to the west, hence the large bay window. The deck at the back of the house by the pool will be extended to the new kitchen area and will be enlarged for table, chairs, BBQ, etc. There will be French doors from the kitchen to the deck.
One of my GFs has basically told me that I'm crazy to want a window at my kitchen sink. She's doing her kitchen over, too, and she's moving her sink and cabinets to an inside wall. Well, that's fine for her, but it's not what I want. If I have to do dishes (and I really despise doing dishes, I might add), I don't want to look at a wall! I want to look outside at my flowers and the pool. We have a lot of bunnies in our back yard and I like to watch them. Birds, too. I enjoy watching things outside whenever I can.
So...where's your kitchen window, if you have one? If you had a choice, would you want a window at your sink area?
