Hope everyone had a merry Christmas!

Mia has still been vomiting almost every day and not eating...she licked her food a couple times. The steroids we have been waiting for finally arrived on Thursday in liquid form, and she immediately vomited from them. We went back to the specialist and she got a steroid injection and a new anti nausea injection and we got to take home injections of both of those to last until Monday. She is still vomiting about once a day and now has diarrhea which is a side effect. My husband read that steroids take about 4-7 days to help IBD, does anyone know if that's true?

We are still feeding her liquid through the feeding tube into her intestine but she is slowly losing weight.

A few days to a  week is not an unreasonable amount of time for steroids to kick in.  Is the injectable anti nausea drug Cerenia?  Its a great drug and best given after  some sub Qfluids as it can sting otherwise, but my cat was on oral and sometimes injectable Cerenia for about 1.5 years.

No, we had tried Cerenia and zofran before when this all started and neither worked at all. This one is metoclopramide. I think it's just a short term prescription.

The steroid injectible is dexamethasone. The liquid steroid that made her vomit was prednisolone. The vet said that some cats don't respond to prednisone so he didn't want to chance that one.

She's also getting Famotidine for stomach acid and mirtazapine for appetite stimulant.

Mia finally started eating a little more today!!! And no vomit today, just diarrhea. Should I add pumpkin or Probiotics to her food? I'm so scared to change anything when she's eating for the first time in weeks. She also drank a little bit which she hasn't done at all in the last few weeks. [emoji]128077[/emoji]

What a sweetheart. I want to cover her with kisses[emoji]128149[/emoji]. So glad to hear she's doing a little better today.

Aww poor little girl, her system's probably all mucked up from what's been happening, and she's probably all stressed too. So glad she didn't vomit though! It's the little victories...

It's almost shocking that neither Cerenia nor Zofran worked.

Your cat's situation is SO DELICATE that I wouldn't do anything  without a licensed Vet's advice.  For an ongoing condition your vet should be willing to give you a call back on Monday if you call first thing.  Most Vets that i know spend 1/3 of their working day doing phone call backs to clients.

I only tried zofran once because she gave a loud cry before she vomited which I know was painful :(

I haven't, I'm waiting on the specialist vet to call me back from yesterday. I know he's out all next week. He said to follow up with my regular vet but I don't really trust her opinions.

Thanks! She is still doing well today and has energy. She really wants to come out of the room she's in but her activity needs to be restricted for at least a few more days to make sure she's recovered from the surgeries. My husband and I are taking turns sleeping with her on an air mattress and she kept me up a lot last night. Our other cat Chessy is confused why she's in there. I'm trying to give him lots of attention too.

Mia stopped eating again on Sunday evening and was still vomiting about once a day and having diarrhea pretty bad.  The specialist I've been working with is on vacation this week, so he asked me to follow up with my regular vet (the one who didn't know how to diagnose IBD).  Well I talked to her yesterday, and now that she knows what the problem is, she laid out a new treatment plan that makes a lot more sense than things the specialist was trying to do.  Now Mia is on weekly Vitamin B injections, Prednisolone liquid steroids (given through her feeding tube so she doesn't vomit), Cerenia for anti-nausea (the Metaclopromide was giving her the bad diarrhea), Famotidine for stomach acid, and Mirtazipine for appetite stimulant.

I went home to check on her at lunch today (my husband checked on her yesterday at lunch), and I got her to eat a little bit on her own!  She hasn't vomited in a day and a half, so let's hope this keeps up!  She's really thin and needs to gain weight ASAP.

EDIT:  We also took off her blue sweater for a little bit last night and my husband washed it while I brushed her with the Furminator.  She LOVED it.  She was purring in my lap and waving her tail.  I think I filled a small trash can with her fur, lol.

What a ride poor Mia has been on! I hope they have it all figured out now. At least it sounds like you're moving in the right direction!

IBD is so cruel...one day I think Mia is doing better and the next day she is not.  I think she is finally getting the right treatment, but I think it might be too late.  She ate a little on her own yesterday morning, after Mirtazapine, and then licked her food once or twice yesterday afternoon, but she hasn't eaten anything else or drank at all.  The last time she had Mirtazapine on Saturday (I can only give it every 3 days) she ate a lot more on her own.  Yesterday afternoon I started syringe feeding her and giving her subq fluids because the liquid food in her feeding tube was contributing to her diarrhea.

I've also noticed that she has been grinding her teeth a little bit when she has food in her mouth.  When I first took her to the vet a few weeks ago, she had 2 teeth that had root resorption that my vet said would have to come out after we deal with her current problems.  (I asked the surgeon during the emergency surgery if they could just take them out then, and they said they can't do dental work.)  Well I was able to look closely at her teeth last night, and 2-3 of them look terrible, really small like they have been wasting away.  I think probably from all the vomiting?  Now I feel even more terrible because she must be in pain from that, and I'm sure it's contributing to her not wanting to eat.  I don't know if I should put her through another procedure to take the bad teeth out when she might not be getting better anyway.

I don't know what to do :(

How is she otherwise? Is she alert? Or is she listless? Obviously there will be a bit of lethargy from not eating but you can tell the difference usually. Does she play at all? Is there still life left in her?  I guess that is the real question.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through so much with her. Can you ask the doctor if there is another appetite stimulant that might help? There are others out there that can be given daily. Even mirtazepine, in some cases, is given every other day. But the side effects are not so great then.

She is definitely less alert and more listless than she used to be.  On Saturday she was more active and trying to get out of the room she's in, probably due to the Mirtazapine dose that day, but since then she has been pretty inactive.  Not playing with anything.  She loves our laps and usually crawls onto it when one of us sits next to her.  It's so hard to tell...I think there's a little life left in her, but not much.  I don't know if her behavior is mainly a result of everything she has been through and just needs more time, or if she's really not getting better.

Maybe...we keep picking up new medicines though, and my husband is getting upset with how much things are costing for her.  I haven't added it all up but I know it's over $8k so far.  I don't know if that would help.  Both the specialist and my regular vet are on vacation this week, but my regular vet told me to text or call her anytime, so I've been doing that every day and she's pretty responsive.
