A few days to a week is not an unreasonable amount of time for steroids to kick in. Is the injectable anti nausea drug Cerenia? Its a great drug and best given after some sub Qfluids as it can sting otherwise, but my cat was on oral and sometimes injectable Cerenia for about 1.5 years.Hope everyone had a merry Christmas!
Mia has still been vomiting almost every day and not eating...she licked her food a couple times. The steroids we have been waiting for finally arrived on Thursday in liquid form, and she immediately vomited from them. We went back to the specialist and she got a steroid injection and a new anti nausea injection and we got to take home injections of both of those to last until Monday. She is still vomiting about once a day and now has diarrhea which is a side effect. My husband read that steroids take about 4-7 days to help IBD, does anyone know if that's true?
We are still feeding her liquid through the feeding tube into her intestine but she is slowly losing weight.
It's almost shocking that neither Cerenia nor Zofran worked. No, we had tried Cerenia and zofran before when this all started and neither worked at all. This one is metoclopramide. I think it's just a short term prescription.
The steroid injectible is dexamethasone. The liquid steroid that made her vomit was prednisolone. The vet said that some cats don't respond to prednisone so he didn't want to chance that one.
She's also getting Famotidine for stomach acid and mirtazapine for appetite stimulant.
Your cat's situation is SO DELICATE that I wouldn't do anything without a licensed Vet's advice. For an ongoing condition your vet should be willing to give you a call back on Monday if you call first thing. Most Vets that i know spend 1/3 of their working day doing phone call backs to clients.Mia finally started eating a little more today!!! And no vomit today, just diarrhea. Should I add pumpkin or Probiotics to her food? I'm so scared to change anything when she's eating for the first time in weeks. She also drank a little bit which she hasn't done at all in the last few weeks. [emoji]128077[/emoji]
What a beautiful little girl.
She is definitely less alert and more listless than she used to be. On Saturday she was more active and trying to get out of the room she's in, probably due to the Mirtazapine dose that day, but since then she has been pretty inactive. Not playing with anything. She loves our laps and usually crawls onto it when one of us sits next to her. It's so hard to tell...I think there's a little life left in her, but not much. I don't know if her behavior is mainly a result of everything she has been through and just needs more time, or if she's really not getting better.
How is she otherwise? Is she alert? Or is she listless? Obviously there will be a bit of lethargy from not eating but you can tell the difference usually. Does she play at all? Is there still life left in her? I guess that is the real question.
I'm so sorry you are having to go through so much with her. Can you ask the doctor if there is another appetite stimulant that might help? There are others out there that can be given daily. Even mirtazepine, in some cases, is given every other day. But the side effects are not so great then.
