i was also wondering if the shake that killed and injured rescue workers reached the trapped miners and possibly doomed them. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, but its possible that it affected them as well.

They *could* be alive, but then again, what's the possibility of that compared to the possibility of the rescue workers dying to retrieve what may actually be the bodies of the trapped miners, instead of finding them alive. That's the horrifying part, (beyond the whole ordeal in general).. if you abandon the rescue and they're alive, you're sentencing them to death. If you continue to try to rescue them, and they're dead, then you've killed rescue workers, and possibly more than three, if they continue.
