Hi all,

My kitty is approaching 2 years old and is very troubled with dermatological problems. I am wonder if anybody has come across anything similar as two vets I've tried have yielded minimal results.

Full history and pictures below.

She was neutered around 6 months old and soon after that I saw she had that ear disease that forms a black layer inside her ears (not sure of the name in English).

I treated her daily with Epiotic and slowly we got rid of that.

Soon after, itching in her ears returned and I assumed it was the same thing coming back and started cleaning her ears again although they were quite clean.

When it persisted I took her to the vet and was treated locally and maybe she took a pill, I can't remember exactly.

It kept going on and off up until last Christmas when it worsened significantly. She was itching a lot and hurting her self with her nails while scratching.

I took her to a new vet who tested her for fungi (on the spot and sent samples to a lab) and found nothing.

She then suggested that she was allergic to something so I started feeding her Royal Canin's hypoallergenic dry food and started giving her Prezolon (cortizone), progressively lowering dosage.

The same pattern continued: after 2-3 weeks of cortizone, she'd be fine and soon after we stopped giving her cortizone, she'd go back to having problems.

All in all, she must have taken cortizone for 6 months, on and off.

In the middle of that, I was away for 6 weeks during which time I left her with a friend who cat sit for me.

When we came back to my apartment she got worse so we assumed that whatever was causing her allergy was most evident here.

When I got her back, she was off Prezolon and being sprayed with Cortavance locally in the problematic areas: around both her ears, on her belly and behind and under her hind legs.

When she got worse again, the vet said we should put her on another cycle of cortizone and I said no and went to see a homeopathic vet here.

He gave me a new treatment including a homeopathic remedy, supplements (Clavaderm and brewer's yeast) and propοlis/calendula tincture applied in the problem areas, as well as bathing with Fungoral shampoo 3 times a week.

He initially thought that after so much cortizone she was probably infected.

No results so he changed the homeopathic remedy and transitioned to Hypericum oil applied locally to help her with the itching.

Today I noticed that her belly is now sagging, something it didn't do to this extent before. I hope it's because she's lost weight or something but it freaked me out.

I also noticed she has a small black lump on her nose that itches a lot.

The new vet said he believes it's a hormonal problem and not an allergy because the problem areas are affected symmetrically (both her ears in the exact same spots, as well as her legs).

So, I'm supposed to go in on Tuesday to get a blood sample from her and do hormonal tests.

Generally she's either sleeping or itching and doesn't purr as much as she used to... She eats but her appetite has definitely decreased.

Does anyone have anything that could help?? My poor kitty is in great distress...

Thanks in advance.

Oh, poor baby. She does look miserable. I really can't offer much, but I would recommend trying to get another opinion with the Cornell school of veterinary Medicine consult service.  It's $55 and the info is below along with the website.

The Camuti Consultation Service (Of Cornell Vet School) is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10AM to 12PM and from 2PM to 4PM ET (excluding holidays) (1-800-548-8937)   http://www.vet.cornell.edu/FHC/health_resources/camuti_service.cfm

Did you get any results from your vet on the blood work?  She looks miserable, poor kitty :(    Are you seeing a dermatologist or just the "regular" vet?  I would definitely recommend a specialist for sure.   Wish I had a "oh I've seen that before" reply for you :(

Guys, thanks for the interest!

We didn't do any blood work in the end as the vet suggested a new homeopathic remedy. I couldn't get it yesterday because something came up and was going to go today...

However, she seems unexpectedly much better today, she even played with some wrinkled paper (her favorite) which she hadn't done in a while.

It's hard to tell what helped, if anything, at this stage - I haven't used any ointments on her for 3 days because I thought they were aggravating her for whatever reason (I've used hypericum tincture often on myself and it's very soothing). So maybe the last homeopathic remedy is kicking in now.

I also started giving her a supplement by Naturea  (Immunity) which has mushrooms and echinacea in it but that was too soon to have helped so much.

It's probably a combination of everything.

Anyway, I hope she'll keep getting better, I'll post updates!

Just an update - she has improved very much recently taking only a homeopathic remedy (Sulphur) so we're continuing down this path, plus some Fenistil topically on her belly to help her cope with the itching!

Hopefully she'll have fully recovered soon!

georgiosd, I wondered what the regimen was that finally worked for your kitty. I have a 12y/o short hair tuxedo that has progressing skin crusts. He has been to see several vets and we haven't had any success. Can you tell me what worked for you and your kitty?

Have you tried coconut oil? My boy is no where near as bad as your little girl, but I'm in a "balancing act" with his skin allergies. I desperately want a homeopathic solution -- my vet wants drugs. On his sores that he can't reach to lick, the coconut oil will clear them up in a few days ..where he can lick it off, it doesn't help much except for the fact that it does some good internally...helps heal from the inside out. It's not a total cure/solution, but I think it has helped my boy. It certainly shouldn't hurt!

Hey guys,

Unfortunately I haven't had any permanently positive results with what we've tried so far.

Sulphur seems to have exhausted its effect after a couple of runs. We also tried another homeopathic drug based on her personality - didn't do much either.

We ran blood tests and although several readings are above the standard values, none of them is high enough to pinpoint any significant problem that we can give her medication for, homeopathic or not.

The last resort, which we're trying now, is a sort of immunotherapy - basically the vet extracted some of her blood, centrifuged it, and re-inserted the plasma part back into her body with a short (under the skin, not an intravenal). I've also given her a small dosage of Neoral, an immunosuppressant used when people have transplants to increase chances of accepting the new parts.

We did this a few days ago and I think there is some improvement, but little... We're due to give her a second shot on Monday and so we have to wait a bit to be certain of no/any effect.

I also Googled "immunotherapy for cats" and found a German lab which develops shots that do a similar job to what we did - I may try that also if this doesn't work (I'm getting desperate) - but, if you do decide to try this, bear in mind that their own fact sheet says that 90% of cats show at least *some* improvement, but *some* varies from "little to no" to "almost cured".

I'll try and update this again in a week or so when we'll know more about the effects of this treatment but if I forget, please post a reply so I get an e-mail notification to remember.

Good luck guys, I hope we all find a way to help our little fury friends.

PS: I don't know if you can just take Sulphur like that, better consult a homeopathic vet first.  As far as I know, it won't hurt the animal even if it's the "wrong" medication but...

I feel so badly for you and your cat. Has the vet absolutely ruled out mites??

We have no evidence to support a parasite theory... I've given her baths with drugs for all kinds of external causes and they've made no difference.

If anything, they've made things worse because the scrubbing I've given her while bathing made her itch further.

I also have two other cats in the house which would have been infected by now if she had any kind of parasite on her, they're always together......

Looks like an autoimmune disease or a severe allergy.....
