Hi all,
My kitty is approaching 2 years old and is very troubled with dermatological problems. I am wonder if anybody has come across anything similar as two vets I've tried have yielded minimal results.
Full history and pictures below.
She was neutered around 6 months old and soon after that I saw she had that ear disease that forms a black layer inside her ears (not sure of the name in English).
I treated her daily with Epiotic and slowly we got rid of that.
Soon after, itching in her ears returned and I assumed it was the same thing coming back and started cleaning her ears again although they were quite clean.
When it persisted I took her to the vet and was treated locally and maybe she took a pill, I can't remember exactly.
It kept going on and off up until last Christmas when it worsened significantly. She was itching a lot and hurting her self with her nails while scratching.
I took her to a new vet who tested her for fungi (on the spot and sent samples to a lab) and found nothing.
She then suggested that she was allergic to something so I started feeding her Royal Canin's hypoallergenic dry food and started giving her Prezolon (cortizone), progressively lowering dosage.
The same pattern continued: after 2-3 weeks of cortizone, she'd be fine and soon after we stopped giving her cortizone, she'd go back to having problems.
All in all, she must have taken cortizone for 6 months, on and off.
In the middle of that, I was away for 6 weeks during which time I left her with a friend who cat sit for me.
When we came back to my apartment she got worse so we assumed that whatever was causing her allergy was most evident here.
When I got her back, she was off Prezolon and being sprayed with Cortavance locally in the problematic areas: around both her ears, on her belly and behind and under her hind legs.
When she got worse again, the vet said we should put her on another cycle of cortizone and I said no and went to see a homeopathic vet here.
He gave me a new treatment including a homeopathic remedy, supplements (Clavaderm and brewer's yeast) and propοlis/calendula tincture applied in the problem areas, as well as bathing with Fungoral shampoo 3 times a week.
He initially thought that after so much cortizone she was probably infected.
No results so he changed the homeopathic remedy and transitioned to Hypericum oil applied locally to help her with the itching.
Today I noticed that her belly is now sagging, something it didn't do to this extent before. I hope it's because she's lost weight or something but it freaked me out.
I also noticed she has a small black lump on her nose that itches a lot.
The new vet said he believes it's a hormonal problem and not an allergy because the problem areas are affected symmetrically (both her ears in the exact same spots, as well as her legs).
So, I'm supposed to go in on Tuesday to get a blood sample from her and do hormonal tests.
Generally she's either sleeping or itching and doesn't purr as much as she used to... She eats but her appetite has definitely decreased.
Does anyone have anything that could help?? My poor kitty is in great distress...
Thanks in advance.
