That's a good idea. He's been snuffling, so I'll bet his nose is stuffy and he can't smell well and so it doesn't seem tempting for him.

I just read your post, and I am very sorry for what you and smudge are going through. He is gorgous!!!!! I really hope everything works out.

You could try diluting a little of the baby food and put it into a medicine dropper and feed it to him that way.

Oh yes, Bijou and Mika need theirs warmed up in the microwave too. Except ham! Bijou sits in front of the refrigerator and tries to crawl in when the door is opened. He knows exactly where the ham is but after reading about it not being good for them, I only give him a bit about once a week. Doesn't stop him from standing on my legs and begging every night though.

Tell Smudge's daddy to give him a little ear scratch from me too.

I am so sorry that I have only just read this thread - I had no idea anything was seriously wrong. And so soon after we were joking about our kitties being look-alikes. I can only hope that things are not as bad as you fear, and send you good vibes for Smudge, especially from Wellington and Napoleon.

I just picked back up on this thread. I'm waiting to hear what the vet says.
Poor kitty. I'm sorry you and he are going through all of this.

I am just learning about Smudge, too. I have always admired how beautiful he is. I am crushed to learn of his diagnosis.

I lost Festus' sister Mattie to FIP last year. She was a jet black girl, just the opposite of your white boy! I know the heartbreak of FIP too well. Feel free to IM me. Hugs to you and your family as you love on your angel for the time you have left together.

Although FIP is horrible, the lessons we can learn from a cat as they go through it are amazing. Like how you said he can find his way around the house. Our Mattie's vision wasn't affected, but as she faded away, she just kept such a peace about her. Although I was sad to watch her go, she continued to be her sweet self right to the end. I only wish people who were ill could have that peace.

Hi there - Smudge and I have been napping on the couch for quite a bit of today. He is still drinking, and walking around, and sitting on laps. Unfortunately, my daughter had him in a room he wasn't familiar with and he peed on something and we saw a little blood. But I guess that is to be expected. He didn't lose control, and it didn't hurt, so we're just taking it day by day.

Good luck . And keep us up to date on kitty!
very true, my Marsh has feline herpes. L-lysine is preferred treatment, besides good nutrition and NO stress
herpes will manifest itself with brown eye discharge, swollen eyelids, and a host of other problems. Marsh wasn't diagnosed properly until we took him to a feline optomologyst.

I'd suggest a specialist, usually regular vets know very little about eye problems, beyond the regular treatment of prescribing an opthalmic ointment.

Oh, I'm sorry you don't know...I did go to a specialist, and he has FIP. My sweet boy is going to be leaving us soon. But I hope people read this thread and think FIP for eye problems, because I didn't know the first thing.

i'm so sorry
eye problems are one of those rare issues which sometimes take a while to diagnose.

I didn't notice the thread was 3 pages long...

Oh, heck, that's OK! I really, really thought it was just Herpes too. My poor vet didn't know what it was, but I have a sneaking suspicion he felt it deep inside and was just in denial.

Poor baby. Some of the signs were there but we just didn't know.

Now...I'm telling everyone...when we all win the lottery - we'll donate money to FIP research.

I must have missed it somewhere--so you DID get the test results back and little Smudge has a DEFINITE diagnosis of FIP??? I am heartbroken. As I said, I lost my little cat Moses to that hateful disease--with him I don't think it affected his eyes at all, he just started (very suddenly) to become very uncoordinated--he couldn't walk in a straight line, when he tried to jump he would usually fall, his little legs were wobbly--it was so hard to watch!!!
Sweet little Smudge--he is such a little beauty--I know you love him so much and this is so hard for you. God bless you for loving him so and giving him all this love and comfort and tenderness in his last days
This is just breaking my heart--I was SO hoping it was something much less serious. PLEASE give sweet Smudge an absolute ton of hugs and kisses and snuggles from me--I have learned to love this little boy too--I pray that the time he has left will be filled with love and peace and joy and comfort--and I know you will do exactly that for your little boy. God bless you, sweet Smudge, you are dearly loved and cherished. And about donating lottery money for a cure for FIP--if I ever win I promise I will be first in line to set up a project to OBLITERATE FIP!!!!

The official test results should be back Monday (tomorrow) but we saw an eye specialist, and by the things he was describing in the eye, it sounds pretty classic. The first red flag was a heightened level of proteins in his bloodwork when we got him neutered. There there was the fever that wouldn't go down with any antibiotic. The second round of bloodwork specifically said the hemoglobin was (breaking up? something like that). So after reading about the disease, it looks like it. The dry kind attacks different organs - brain (seizures, control), eyes (blindness), liver, kidneys. What a terrible disease!
