Savannah or Ocicat?

Ok, so I got this cat for free from my boss who told me it was a 3-5 year old F3 Savannah.  He got it for free from someone he knew that could no longer care for it.

Neither I nor my boss have any kind of papers proving what he is or he isn't.

Judging from pictures online, I did find some Savannahs that look just like him.  However, most of the pictures of Ocicats I see look just like him as well.

It's really hard to tell because they both seem to have similar markings.  Dark spots, stripes on top of the head and down the back, banded tail and arms...

His coat is really hard to portray in pictures.  He's mostly a sandy gold color but his fur is tipped with grey/white/silver.  His face is the best way to see this.  It kind of reminds me of a coyote.  In natural light you see all of his colors and he looks dusty, in most of the pictures I try to take you don't see any of the grey in him.

He has dark brown spots that turn to almost black on his tail.

It's very frustrating to say the least.  There are some Savannahs that look genuinely Serval, while some are nearly indistinguishable from Ocicats.

Size range didn't help me either.  Despite the fact that I can't get a straight answer on how to properly measure a cat, and the fact that I don't have a scale, Savannahs and Ocicats seem to have an overlapping size range and he seems to be right smack in the middle on the smaller side of Savannah and larger side of Ocicat.

The way I measured him was floor to shoulder as he was sitting up tall (I didn't stretch him, nor was he hunching) and the base of the neck to the base of the tail.  He seems to be about 14x17 in this manner.  Including the tail he is 28" long, but these likely aren't accurate as measuring a cat by yourself can be kind of difficult.

I don't have a scale but he feels like a bowling ball.  I'd estimate he's around 15lbs.

Any help is appreciated.

Sorry for the double-post, there doesn't seem to be an edit tool that I can see.

Here is a better picture of his face so you can see the markings.

I can't help you, but wanted you to know I think your cat is just beautiful! I love his blue eyes! I'm sure some of the breeders can help, But without papers I guess it doesn't matter. I think you got a steal no matter what!

Thank you!

Yes, regardless of what he is I was very attracted to his rather wild look, his striking eyes, and generous size.  His attitude is very unique as well, something I did not expect from my rather limited experience with friends' and family's cats over the years.

He even sounds cool, he doesn't have a typical "meow".  It's more of a deeper "mow" than anything else, and he has a nice rumbly purr.

He's a sweet cat and since he was free it's even sweeter!

If he is purebred---I'm not guaranteeing that although spots and blue eyes are fairly rare in the general population so probably he at least has some purebred in him---I'd say more likely a Bengal than a Savannah.

Beautiful boy :rbheart:

I don't think he is a ocicat due to your boy having blue eyes. Ocicats do not have blue eyes so that rules it out for me.
However I do see some savannah in him but I would say he looks more like an F5 or F6 savannah than an F3.

Gorgeous looking boy :D

Thanks for the all the replies and the compliments so far.

Interesting to know about Ocicats not having blue eyes.  It's funny, now that you mention that almost every picture I see I notice that they have yellowish eyes.

I did consider that maybe he is a farther removed generation of Savannah than I was told.  But I am glad that someone else sees some savannah in him and I'm not just going on hearsay.  I swear in the right light you can see a subtle remnant of the Serval's characteristic ear markings, it seems like his ears are lighter in the middle and darker  on the top and bottom, but I could be seeing it because I want to see it

As far as Bengals go, don't they usually have rosettes instead of spots?

Rosettes are desirable, yes, but not all Bengals come out with perfect show coats :D. So a lot of pet-quality Bengals have kind of plain spots. Bengals are a lot more common than Savannahs which is why I think it's more likely. If you Google "seal lynx point Bengal" there are quite a few who look like him.

Hmm...

You may be right about that one.

Bengal or Savannah, eh, both have pretty cool heritage

One very beautiful cat.  That coat looks like it has a wonderful texture to it, short but dense and thick.

If he is biggish, like you hint somewhere, it is an indicium for Savannah, or possibly Bengal.  Ocis are rather petite, these I did saw.

So I did talk to my boss again about him and found some interesting information.

Apparently at some point Samson got into some building materials while my boss was renovating his basement and got a little sick from something.  While at the vet, the normal veterinarians had some issues, I guess, and they called in a "specialist" to deal with him.  Ended up running up a $1000 vet bill, but they couldn't find out the problem and his illness just went away on it's own. My boss thinks he just got into some fiberglass insulation, and after that kept him far from the basement until it was finished and it never became anything worse.

The "specialist" reportedly told my boss what Sam was, but he doesn't remember it exactly and says "his name was, like, 5 words long".

The word is that he is mixed with an orange tabby.  The guy my boss got him from had two cats, Sam and his apparent older sister who was supposedly an F2 Savannah, but she was a household terror and he was super chill so my boss took Sam.

Let's assume this is all correct.  If his sister is an F2 that would make his mother an F1, but Savannah males are sterile until F5.  So if that is all correct he either is an F2 bred from an F1 Savannah mother and a domestic cat father (orange tabby?), or an F2 Savannah "SBT" bred from an F1 Savannah mother and an F5 or later Savannah father.

The latter seems the most likely to me, as he seems a lot more housecat than Serval to be a legitimate F2.  If he was bred with two Savannah parents, one which was 5 generations removed from the wild, he would have quite a low percentage of Serval traits and quite a high percentage of typical cat traits.

He has a regular shaped head, triangular and standard proportioned ears, and he isn't really tall.  If all he got from his Serval ancestry was his markings, his attitude, and his slightly larger size, that could all make sense.

Of course this is all going on hearsay and speculation, and we all know how the game of telephone works...

Either way my boss is adamant that he is a Savannah.
