As you may all know, I'v got a terrible knee problem that has been going on for nearly three years. Well, my Physiotherapist (he is great and excellent at knee problems) has come to a loss as to what to do for me now. I have hit a plateau again and am losing mobility and muscle again. (not that there's a lot, anyway, as it has wasted away)

Today, I am going back to see my Consultant who may or may not give me a nerve block to stop the pain. I am terrified of needles at the best of times, let alone in my sore knee.
I don't know what else he might suggest and I am scared that he might suggest another operation. (I have already had two and had to defer a year from uni due to the second surgery)

I would just like to request some vibes that everything goes ok at the hospital and that my Consultant has an idea on where to go from here. It is really getting me down, as I was so active before all this

Thank you!

Sarah, I sympathize with you. I too hate needles and have a doctor appt tomorrow afternoon where I am going to have blood work done. UGH! I think when it comes to a situation like yours, we have to have faith that someone somewhere will find something to help you. Just keep your spirits up as best you can, and just remember, the needles only pinches for a second.......just keep thinking at that time, this isn't so bad, this isn't so bad, this isn't so bad..........and it'll be over with!!!

Thank you, Susie, Susan and Chris!

I will try to remember the 'it isn't so bad' thing, Susie!
I'll be thinking of you, too, when you go to the doctors too!

Susan, I hope I don't have to have another operation too!
I think two is enough for me!

Chris, Thank you! I hope they find something too!

I was on Vioxx that worked really well, but it has been recalled and taken off the market, so I hope thay have another new anti inflamatory/painkiller now
Although, i'd rather just be better *sigh*

At the kitty's beck and call
Sarah - good luck chick. The thing I always try to remember when I'm going for nasty things is that no matter how much I'm NOT looking forward to something by this time tomorrow or by teatime etc it will have come and gone.

It helps to put it into perspective and makes the whole event seem much smaller than my mind blows it up to be. I know others on the site find this helpful as well.

Even so - I'll be thinking of you and sending tons of good vibes your way

Not sure what you mean by "vibes", but if it's anything close to prayers, then you've got 'em! !

My daughter had a knee replacement done when she was 43, and being pig-headed (takes after her daddy ?) she forced her therapy and threw her sticks away after 6 weeks.

She said later, that the only problem with the artificial knee is that it makes her swim "lop-sided".

You are getting good advice about looking forward to "when it is over", or to a "month from now".

I always thought this stuff you hear about blocking out painful memories and traumatic experiences was a bunch of junk, but I experienced it myself over a trip to the dentist, something I fear worse than facing a tiger, really.

I had told my wife not to tell me when my dentist appointment was until an hour before it was time, so I wouldn't have to dread the event in anticipation, and when I was in the dentist chair, he said something about the last time I was there, and I argued with him, telling him that I had never been there before, and I BELIEVED what I was saying.

He was able to show me records and X-rays to prove I had been there before.

My point is, that your mind IS ABLE to block out the memory of events that are too traumatic, for whatever reason, to live with, and I suppose that is a good thing.

God bless you, and count your blessings. Things could be a lot worse.

I am sorry you are in so much pain.
I can definately understand your needle anxiety. I have it too, I was supposed to get a cortisone shot in my neck over a year ago for bad disks and I still haven't done it!

Sending many good vibes to you.

I can identify with you. I have a bad knee and a bad hip, the results of horse riding accidents over the years. My doctor recommended glucosamine tablets every day, and I find they really do help - I know the difference if I don't take them. You can buy them in health shops and pharmacies, though obviously you should ask your doctor first. But several people I know swear by it, so it may be worth a try. Good luck with it.

Thank you, everyone!

Beth, I made sure that I had something to look forward to after my appointment! (although, I can't remember what it was now
helped get me through though!
)

Rhonda, that's excellent advice!

Leonard, Oooh
I am hoping I can scrape by without a knee replacement! I hope your daughter is doing well with her knee now! Repressing bad memories can be good, so long as they stay there! Also, thatnk you for reminding me, I always do think that I am lucky, as things could be a lot worse!

Fran, have you had your knees checked? Thank you for the vibes!

Diane, Needles are so yucky
But I think you should go get your shot if you need it! We could get appointments at the same time and send vibes to eachother!! (it would make us laugh telling our Doctors what we have planned!
)

Jenny, I haven't heard of glucosamine tablets, but I will certainly speak to my doctor about them! What do they do?

Mrsd, thank you for your prayers!

My appointment didn't go too badly! I remembered all the advice that you all gave me and was telling myself it wasn't going to be as bad as I thought. I was totally psyched up for the injection.

We discussed my knee and all the problems that i've been having and then my Consultant discussed the next step.

I was under the impression from my Physiotherapist that it would be a 'simple' injection into my knee to deaden the pain in the nerves surrounding it. Nope, I was wrong! I didn't have an injection yesterday (thankful, yet not) I have to go back to the hospital in approximately two weeks for a day. I will be seeing the Pain Management Specialist (called Derrick - funny what you remember!!
) He will give me injections (!!) into my vein that runs down the inside of my knee in order to numb to nerves.

I am on the understanding, now, that it will be a course of injections

Loving my beautiful baby girl
How wonderful, Sarah, that you have a Dr. who is sounds to be extremely interested in your care and listens so intently to your present symtoms. This is so important in receiving proper therapy! I'm glad you will be seeing the Pain Management Specialist, Derrick, and will be receiving treatment that will hopefully eliminate this pain you are having that is so affecting your entire life. I'm just so sorry, though, that you will have to receive this series of injections. This must feel really scary just to think about it.
You know we're all here with you, every step of the way!

Thank you Sam!
I need the calming vibes! Needles are so yucky!

Yes, Susan, I am SO pleased that there isn't going to be another operation!
I just have to get through the prospect of the injections
Better than a General Anaesthetic and knives though!

Stephanie, my Dr is wonderful, as is my Physiotherapist! (they worked together at the hospital I was at yesterday and work really well together! My physio is now near me!) They both seem intrigued by my case as I am so young have so many pitfalls and problems throughout the treatment - I am sure they will help though!
Yes, it does affect my whole life *sigh*
The injections are terrible scary! I kind of wish that I had have had them yesterday and then it would be over, but it wasn't to be! Thank you for being there!
