Hello, TCS users. I recently adopted a solely indoor cat somewhere around a year and three months old and I was concerned for her disposition. At this point I've had her for a little less than a week but my partner does have two other cats at a family house where we are both supposed to be visiting and from what we know from the previous owners of this cat, Pelhi was born at some point in July and adopted early August on her own and has had no opportunity to socialise since with anything other than humans.

I understand the cats may not mix and to introduce them by scent first etc but I was concerned for how they could be if they do mix given her lack of exposure to other cats. I do have alternative accommodation prepared for Pelhi and myself if they cannot get along but ideally I would also want her to not be alone in our time together and do ideally intend to adopt another cat as time goes on.

As such, my question is when would it be best to find and introduce a partner for her? Of course, after a few more weeks for her to settle being the absolute minimum and naturally I also understand I would be undertaking care of a whole new cat and not just a play mate for Pelhi.

How long will you be visiting for? Are all cats involved spayed and neutered?

Yes they are. If they mix well the visit would be around a month depending on work. One of them does have FeLV so she will of course need to be vaccinated before exposure too.

How far is the trip? I am wondering if it would be better to leave your cat at home and have someone look after her. Travel and change are both very hard on cats.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Unfortunately nobody will be available to take care of her unless I myself stay behind which I am considering. Still, at some point I will have to take her so I can help out my parents. I suppose I could find a paid carer but money will be tight so I'll have to see. I'll have to find a way to minimise stress for her.

The trip itself will take about four hours.

S seaside I did a quick search and found many threads relating to travel with cats:

http://www.thecatsite.com/newsearch?search=Travel+with+cats

Some situations in these threads may not apply but hopefully some of the advice you read will help. I would suggest that you make sure Pehli views her carrier as a safe, comfortable place. To do this I would put a shirt of yours that has been worn but not washed (so your scent, which is comforting to her will be on it) in the bottom of the carrier. Leave the carrier open and somwhere Pehli can access it and let her explore at her leisure. You could also fed her meals to her in or near the carrier so she associates the carrier with good things (food!) and praise her if you see her lounging in it. Let her do the exploration at her own pace. If you are traveling by car, take short practice rides with her in her carrier to let her get used to riding in a car. Again, treats and praise during the practice rides will help establish positive associations with travel in a car.

Wow, thank you very much. I really appreciate the help! I'll be sure to start that out sooner rather than later and take a look over that thread now.
