Hi! We have 2 cats and my 14 year old cat has been acting funny. We had all the test done on him to make sure he is not sick. Now he howls all the time, he doesn't want to be touched and he is missing the litter box when he poops. He has also started to attack the other cat for no reason. How do I help him. He is loosing a lot of weight too and like I said the doctor has no clue whats wrong with him. I'm thinking of getting a second opinion. I'm really concerned, he's even started to bite me. Oh, he also has really good days and he'll come and sit next to me and purr. What should I do?

Sounds like maybe he's in pain? What tests did the vet do? Is he eating okay, and what does he eat?

HI! He's eating blue buffalo grain free food. The vet did all blood work on him thyroid, kidney, etc... all came back clean. He is also loosing  his fur in clumps and it is really matted and won't let me brush him.

A second opinion or a referral from your vet to a specialist might be a good idea. Something is definitely not right. If he were my kitty, I'd consider having an ultrasound done to see if anything odd showed up internally.

I think the weight loss is a red flag, I would get a second opinion.  Both of my senior cats turned out to be sick (separate occurrences) when they showed sudden weight loss.

Is he going to the bathroom less frequently?  Perhaps he's constipated, one of my guys had an issue with that which of course causes pain and then odd behavior.  My vet x-rayed to confirm.

Hope it all turns out well!

HI! The only problem with the ultra sound is that it's pretty expensive. He also needs to be sedated for it so that adds extra. He is drinking a lot of water and eating a lot. Also howls, but, not when he goes to the bathroom. Though he stinks. I was also told it could be diabeties. We are thinking it may be close to the end for him and this happens to be the hardest decision I have to make. He is not doing well at all.

Drinking a lot can also be a sign of kidney disease.  I've had 2 cats in renal failure that both also showed signs of dementia.  My female who has since passed would get "lost" in my 1000 square foot house.  I'd find her terrified in the upstairs hallway not knowing where she was.  She was a sweet, sweet girl until she started to lose it (and she was after) but one time when she got really scared because she didn't know where she was, she did bite me.  She too would miss the litterbox.  One time I moved the box 3 feet and she was like "Well the box is supposed to be here" and she went about her business.

The male I have currently in renal failure also has dementia.  He will sit, stare at my headboard and howl if he can't find me.  It is heart breaking.

Having your pets get old is diffucult.  I would consider a second opinion and if you can find a cat only vet that would be your best bet.
