Hi everyone- I don't often make threads but I have a good friend whose kitty has been struggling with IBD and mild pancreatitis for the last year. He's so skinny and doesn't eat much.

He had a pancreatitis flare-up last week and was also diagnosed with anemia, though it was caught in the early stages. We think it's from poor nutrition, most likely due to the fact he has IBD and hasn't been eating enough.

Has anyone tried NourishCat for their kitties with IBD? It has calories and needed vitamins, plus I hear cats love it because it tastes like milk. I've read lots of reviews on how it's saved their cats from wasting away. Will it make him go diarrhea?

My friend is at wit's end and needs help.

I would say there are no guarantees that:
a) your friends cat will drink it
b) it won't cause diarrhea
c) it's good for cats with IBD

Have you seen this website? It's all about IBD and has lots of helpful information: IBDKitties – Helping Save Lives…One Paw at a Time Maybe there will be something there that will be useful in finding some supplements or food that will help your friend's cat. I know IBD can be so tricky to deal with. Is this cat on any medications. I think that is usually necessary.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, he's on Cerenia, Prednisolone and Centrine. I don't think the drugs are really helping.

He was having a bad bout of diarrhea and a pancreatitis flare-up. He would barely eat; would lick the food a couple of times and then walk away. He is currently on Purina Beyond pate food. If he refuses that she reverts back to Fancy Feast. I just don't think those brands of wet food are doing him any good with the condition he's in. She'll maybe get a small spoonful of food in him a few times a day so he's certainly not getting the nutrients he needs, especially with the diarrhea. He's been getting fluids every week.

The other day she caught him eating the kitty litter crystals!! She told her vet and her reply was "he was probably hungry." What the heck?!! I told her it could be a sign of nutrient deficiency or even anemia and she needed to get her cat back to the vet to test for it. Sure enough, he tested positive for anemia. I told her that vet was an idiot and to get a new vet!

She has an appt with a specialist on Tuesday for an ultra-sound. But in the meantime I think he really needs to get some calories and much-needed vitamins in him. She's going to switch to a raw diet (after my badgering her to try it) but she needs to get her cat to eat first.

I was really hoping some membets on here had tried NourishCat for their kitties with IBD and whether it helped.

Glad he is on Pred, which I've heard is really quite necessary for IBD. How about Vit. B? Is he getting that?

I agree with you that anytime a cat is eating litter that is a pretty good clue that they may have anemia. Glad your friend is seeking a new Vet :sigh:

I think he's had vitamin B injections. I brought up the digestive enzymes but her vet doesn't think he needs them. I thought pancreatitis kitties needed added digestive enzymes?

Why not try raw? It's the best diet possible for an IBD cat. Here's more info and you can join our very active facebook group if you'd like more specific help.

I believe SOME pancreatitis kitties need digestive enzymes, but can't say for certain, as every case is different. I've heard that in some instances, they can actually cause harm, but I can't recall the circumstances, and cannot locate the thread where it was discussed. Also cannot recall if that was concerning pancreatitis or IBD, but was definitely ONE of those :sigh:.

I think your best bet is for your friend to discuss all of that with the new Vet. So, in regards to the medication/supplements he is curently on, I don't see any reference to pain meds, and that may be the reason he isn't eating much. He may be in a great deal of pain :frown:

Yes, I've been pushing her to try raw food but I don't live in Ohio so it's hard to get her to do things without my being there.

I have my own kitty on Natures Variety Instinct canned and Primal frozen rabbit raw food.

I think Centrine is supposed to help with pain...

Kitty (that's her cat's name) had an ultra-sound done yesterday and they suspect lymphoma in his stomach AND lymphoma or ulcerative colitis in his intestines. They did a biopsy of tummy to confirm and she is awaiting results on that.

If lymphoma is confirmed, does anyone have experience with using goat's milk to help? We are scrapping the NourishCat since Kitty appears to be much worse than originally thought.

What a crummy week. I'm in Texas and have friends/family in Houston so I've had my hands full, too.

The results came back and he had a massive tumor in his stomach. She kept him at the vet hospital for 6 days and because nothing was working to help him, she finally had to let him go yesterday.

Thank you all who replied in this thread and tried to help. It was really appreciated!!
