Another reason to keep them clipped is if he scratches someone and draws blood. Cat scratches and bites can get infected quite easily.

Is it NECESSARY to trim a cat's claws?

I haven't read this thread yet, but from my own experience, it is not necessary at all to trim a cats claws. Unless it is something that causing problems for the cat, the only reason to trim is if it bother YOU.
