Lil Buddy played! Well, OK, he took a couple of swats at a string, but still. That's progress, right? I let him down in the bathroom after cuddle time and played with a string with him and Asa. Asa loves that game and he played and Buddy played a little. He was probably making fun of Asa for thinking it was real prey. He explored the bathroom, got in the other kitties litterbox and checked it out. He looked in the bathtub. Then he spent his time tryint to open the door. I have been having our time together before dinner. Maybe I should do it after, when he isn't so hungry. He went to the vet today. His weight is up to 10.8 from 10.3 a week ago. She said to feed him as much as he wants, that he will probably gain another pound at least. He isn't rail thin but he doesn't have any spare fat. His owie is healing slowly, she said maybe another month. He bit me twice today. The vet said to tell him no sharply and let him know that it isn't OK. I am a little hesitant to do that. I think just not reacting in fear and continuing to get him out of his crate is better. Maybe I will take out his crate and just give him an open bed. I haven't decided that yet. I know the crate makes him feel safe but it also lets him not progress. Maybe. Any opinions? I forgot to take the camera.

I've forgotten what kind of crate you are using.

If you are using a carrier, perhaps dissambling it halfway, and leaving the bottom in there would open his world up some, but also leave something familiar there.

If you are using a true crate, perhaps making sure that it isn't covered at all, and that the door is propped open will accomplish the same.

I wouldn't just up and remove the crate, but I would give him a choice between the crate and the rest of the room.

Also, make sure that your doors are cat proof...I've known cats that could open doors.

He sounds like he's doing very well.

Keep us posted,

He is in a big crate, a dog crate, about 2x3 feet floor space. In there he has a little plastic crate with the door open. He likes to sit on the top of it during the night. He is very nocturnal, but quiet about it unless he hankers for a middle of the night snack. I can take the top off the little crate and he would still have his bed, just without the top. I think I may get a shelf to put in there so he could have an "upstairs" place to climb onto. Becky

Sounds like a great idea

Perhaps without the cage you can get some pictures?

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Maybe try taking the crate out of the cage, and creating a shelf in the cage, and placing the crate near the cage, and leaving the cage door open? With ferals, especially older ones, it's really best just to let them go at their own pace, and he feels safe in the cage - but if he snuggles in the crate at times, moving it outside of the cage may be a way to help him "enlarge" his space? And it's ALWAYS best to keep the crate out and available, especially if it's a "safe" space. This will make it easier in the future when he's not using the cage to get him to the vet.

I was tired this morning so when Lil Buddy started meowing I just took him up on the bed with me. He started exploring and he was fine with me touching him while his four feet were on the bed. So I just let him be. He has been exploring and stops by every once in a while to see me. Asa is fine with this but Sally is a little miffed. She isn't hissing but she is following him everywhere. He discovered a catnip toy and was so excited. He is very attracted to the windows, though. I think he has escape plans. Becky

Lil Buddy purred! He has spent 24 hours free now and is doing just fine. He spends a lot of time on my bed. This morning he came up and plonked himself down on my chest and purred when I petted him. This is a first.
He still bites, though. I can't predict when he will do it. But when he bites then he will continue to bite if I try to pet him so I just leave him be. But two minutes later he might approach me for pets.
The other thing I have noticed about him now that he is out an about is that he doesn't jump onto things. He uses his front legs to pull up. I don't know if that is just his particular habit or if there is a problem. He can get up high but he has to do it by stages, not jumping to the top like my other two. He goes from the bed to the shelf to the window instead of just jumping to the window.
He is using the main litter box now and only goes back into his cage to eat. He is so funny when it is time to eat. He comes into the kitchen when he hears the cans open and meows and escorts me back to his cage to eat. What a sweet boy. Becky

Great news!

I would would be mildly concerned about the climbing habit, but unless he is showing signs of discomfort or something like that, it is probably just a personality trait. However it is worth noting, and bringing up at his next vet visit if he's still doing it.

Have you had any luck with pictures Becky?

Congrats!

As always, please keep us posted,

I took a picture of Lil Buddy and I finally figured out how to get the picture out of the camera into my computer. But I don't know how to get the picture into here. I can figure out how to email a picture. But I can't email it to the list. I looked it up in the site instructions and it refers to a browse button in the post reply screen but I don't see a browse button here. So if anyone can help me I will post his pic.
I took him to the vet yesterday. His wound is still getting smaller. It is now 1x3 cm. I never measured it until last week when I complained to the vet that it didn't seem to be getting any smaller and she said to measure so I would know. Last week it was 3.5x1.5 cm so we are still making progress. She said that the last part is slower healing and if it stops progressing she will do a surgical closure because it is now small enough. He has a small cyst on his neck that needs to be removed, he needs a dental and they want to xray his hips so he definately has an anesthesia in his future. He is now microchipped and officially mine. I even called animal control to make sure no one was looking for him and no one was. So he is mine, all mine.
He and Asa are getting to be pretty good friends. When I took him to the vet Asa went, too, because he had an eye infection. I took two carriers because I didn't think they were good enough friends to share that small of a space. Buddy's crate was on the exam table and Asa's was on the chair. When I took Asa out onto the table he went right into Buddy's crate with him. Buddy just moved over for him so there was over 20 pounds of cat in that little carrier.
Lil Buddy weighs 11.5 pounds now but the vet thinks he needs to be at least 12. She said to still give him his two cans a day. Sally and Asa each eat about one can a day. Buddy thinks each meal is his last still, so he scarfs up his whole can at each meal.

You have to host the images on another site, and then link to it.

Photobucket.com is one of the more popular here on the board.

You put the file there, and then you link the image into your post by:

typing

In your post.

If you need any help, just send me a PM.

Great news on Lil Buddy

Well, that didn't work, did it. It requires my password. I know people do this so I should be able to. But I don't know how. Becky

Ooooh, it worked. But it is so big. How would I make it smaller? Becky

You can see the scar on the front of his neck. It goes clear around to the middle of the back of his neck. The wound is in the middle of it, at the side of his neck.

You have to resize the photo before you post it to the site.

Your Fuji Finepix S3000 should've come with software that will let you do this.

There are also some pretty good free programs out there.

I have a Fujifilm camera and the software is really hard for me to figure out. But I will work on it. It took me two days and going to the Fuji site for me to figure out how to get the picture from my camera into the computer. I will try resizing. Thanks, Becky

I did it! Thanks.
OK, how could you tell what kind of camera I have? Are you psychic? Becky
