If high liver enzymes were caused by needing a dental cleaning, how long after the dental would it take for liver enzymes to return to normal?

She's been on Denamarin since early Nov and had a bloodtest a month+ after starting, plus had bloodwork before her dental (just over 2 months being on it). The denamarin is given about 3-5 pm each day and make sure she doesn't eat 1 hour after or 2 hours before giving. I use just enough pill pocket to barely coat, so she will take the pill.

On Oct 27., AST (90), ALT (385), and ALP (88) were high.

On Dec. 13, limited recheck for ALT was 364.

On Jan. 10, pre-dental bloodwork showed still high, however I haven't requested records yet to see exact numbers.

Are you familiar with timeframe to see differences with Denamarin use?

I am not familiar with time frame, I would ask to see the records so you could see if those numbers are coming down slowly.
Do you remember if her GGT was high?

Just received records from Jan 10, 2023 and ALT seems to have gone up to 433. I was worried about her appetitie being reduced this week after her dental and surgery, with 3 times in a row she did not come upstairs while I prepped their dinner.

A vet did send me a message, including they can prescribe an apetite stimulant. After hearing that, my cat has been back to eating pretty normally! This morning, last night and last morning ate almost all her food at once and went back to finish within a half hour to finish. Plus followed me upstairs and into the room where they get feed for evening meal! She hasn't done that for months! Crossing my fingers something is better??

Maybe healing from surgery affected her eating. Need to decide if I need to pick up the appetite stimulant since she is eating better and showing more interest at mealtime in the last 1.5 days than she has in months??? Will it continue?

At least I have a plan and next steps. They can give me a referral for ultrasound, but if she continues to do better I am wondering if it is necessary right now to do US? I would definitely retest her live values to see if any progress. Guess I should ask about that. What would you all do? Esp if more on a budget.

Great news! How much of the appetite stimulant did the vet give you?
Personally I'd probably retest her values and see how they do before the ultrasound, especially if your vet didn't specifically say she needs and ultrasound ASAP. I hope she continues to improve!!

iPappy iPappy No appetite stimulant has been given yet, which is why I'm very excited about her improved appetite now for 2 days straight! :) She just started eating well again. I don't think I will buy the appetite stimulant at this point bc she is back to eating well, but it's great to know it is available if/when I need it.

Awesome, that reaffirms what I was leaning towards and was very helpful to hear. Thanks for your feedback regarding this!

Oh geez, I totally misread that and thought her appetite came back after the appetite stimulant. This is even better!!
Please keep us updated on how she is doing!

So her blood test showed liver enzymes still are elevated (430). Her appetitie is still decent, but not quite pre-appetitie. I am also trying to train her for a microchip feeder this week, so not sure if she's a little fussy about that. It depends on the day and which food she is getting, some days she eats most all at once and other days needs hours to finish.

I'm getting a referral for an ultrasound, and my vet said it's not super urgent, but I would like to get it done in the next month or so, if possible. So we'll see. I'm continuing the Denamarin for now.

Was it the ALT that was 430? How about the others?
I think the ultrasound is an excellent idea, just to get a better picture of what's going on. You're taking such excellent care of her. :hugs:

Yes. Back in late Oct her AST was 90 and ALP 88, which flags values as high. With the limited blood check-up, those values were not included in her last three bloodtests.

Ultrasound will be $700 and they referred me to another clinic as they do not do them at my vet. Probably try to go this month. They don't do appts, which is annoying, if just getting an ultrasound, and said it can be 1-4 hour wait. oof.

I made an appointment with a specialist to get the ultrasound done so it would be an actual appt time. Appt was today and they found a large mass, which appears to have spread to other areas, so they believe it is cancer. They are very hesitant about surgery being a possibility due to size, so I choose not to do anymore diagnostics because we wouldn't be able to treat it anyway. Cost was also a factor as it would have been thousands to do a ct to plan if surgery was possible, and could be $7-10,000 if we tried surgery.

They did give me antibiotics incase there was any infection and this may ease things a bit, as well as appetite stimulant. Just this week she started having reduced appetite to where she has only been eating 1/3-2/3 of her meals. Vet said they could try draining the fluid, but it wasn't clear if it would come back right away or take time to build up, and most likely the mass was causing the real issue. That due to size that was most likely impacting her appetite. There is a fluid filled center that could rupture or cause infection, but I wasn't sure if it was worth draining bc I don't want to cause anymore discomfort for my cat by putting her through procedures that can be painful or cause additional complications.

She is also jaundiced, and some other liver values elevated now, too.

I will most likely need to decide when it is time and will be looking into someone coming to my home to put her down. I've been really worried about her this week, and this prognosis shows I was picking up signals she wasn't feeling okay. There were times she was sitting on my desk this past just looking at me and occasionally climbed onto my lap while at my computer. I got the feeling she was trying to communicate with me that she was not feeling well. I'm feeling really sad right now.

I am so sorry. :(
I can't remember, but how old is she? Is she stressed out at the vets?
I have been in similar situations with mine where a procedure might work and hold for awhile, or it might work and then come back in 24 hours. In those situations (provided their overall quality of life is still good), I *usually* try it---once. I've had 50/50 success rates with this, but talking with your vet about draining the fluid and what they feel would be best would be something I wouldn't write off completely, if you feel she would be up to it.
:hugs:

She's about 12.5 years old. She's not doing well. Looks very weak and hardly ate anything. If I can't get home service until Monday, I don't think she's going to make it nor should I put her through waiting that long. It feels like she declined so much between before vet and when she arrived home from the vet.

I guess it depends on if she's showing interest in breakfast this morning. She was supposed to get something to relax her yesterday so she was less vocal during ultrasound, and I was hoping maybe that was affecting her. But she was up just now and I placed her food in front of her and just a couple licks and she was done. Concerning, esp bc I applied the appetite stimulant an hour before her dinner last night and don't feel like it's doing anything and she's eating worse than she was. She did eat up the liquid treat I gave her (did not help her eat food when I put it on food, but ate it separately and only took her pill pockets when I smothered them in the treat), so I'll feed her a couple of those to at least get some calories/nutrients if she won't eat food. Going to call my vet to discuss, too.

She's walking steadier this morning, but hardly ate any breakfast. Was excited about the liquid treat at first, but didn't eat it after putting the rest on a plate (only 1 tablespoon in packet?). Did take her meds with treat on it.

Just give her what she will eat. Try everything, low-sodium tuna, deli turkey breast, whatever. She just needs you to feel somewhat comfortable right now. If it was me, I'd avoid any more vet visits, they are just too stressful. I'm so sorry.....I'll pray fro you all. Please come and talk to us any time you need to. You need to vent at times like these......

The at home service only had opening on Sunday and worried she won't last that long. They called back and said a vet can make a trip today, so I scheduled that. I'd rather do it at home than have to take her to the vet and don't want her to suffer more than she is by waiting.

She hesitated at the stairs, but went up some, but then stopped and looked at the stairs..I told her, let me carry you up. We've been sitting in the enclosed deck upstairs since then. My other two cats are keeping close by my eldest, too.

I'm not ready to say goodbye, but don't want her to be in pain anymore. I don't think it's fair having her wait until Sunday. There's been times she sits and stares at me past few days when right in front of me and feel it's her communicating she's not okay. I know I'm making the right decision, but it's hard.
