Three days ago, I was petting my cat on the side of the head when she winced and ran away. I grabbed her to look at the area and noticed that there was a bone-hard lump along her left jawline. Of course, I freaked out. Convinced she had osteosarcoma or squamous cell carcinoma, I rushed her to the ER vet 2 hours away.
The vet said it could be an abscess or cancer. They sedated her and did dental X-rays with plates. They also aspirated some of the fluid and looked under the microscope. It was pus.
The vet then came back and said that based on the x-rays and the fact that there was pus and that she had some bad teeth, she was 95% certain it wasn't cancer. She got an antibiotic injection and a painkiller injection. Yesterday, we returned for the tooth extraction. She said she would biopsy if she found something odd.
They extracted two teeth and drained the pus. They found a small foreign object that looked like a tiny sliver of fingernail lodged in her gums. Now she has a few stitches and is on a painkiller and staying in our room. She's eating well.
The vet said that based on all of this, she's fairly confident it isn't cancer. She said there's no way to be certain without a biopsy, but that she really doesn't think it is cancer. We were told the hard lump would go away once the inflammation subsided and once the antibiotic injection started working.
I still can't sleep. I'm harping on that 5%. I'm TERRIFIED that this is actually osteosarcoma or the jaw and that the vet just missed it. Can someone talk me down?
