Mary Anne, sometimes it is normal for some persians to snort and sound like they're not breathing very well. This bothers me about the breed. Jake has this problem but I believe his is allergies. I give him 1/4 to 1/2 a chlortrimetron tablet a couple times a day when he has problems. It's a decongestant/anti-histamine. You can get it over the counter at any drug store or grocery store. Can someone clue me in on persians please? Here is what I have noticed....
Trouble breathing, honestly when I look at his face, I don't even see a nose!
This is not normal as far as I know of. None of my persians had trouble swallowing. Maybe it is part of his neglect and will go away with time (I hope). But I'd ask the vet about it.He has trouble swallowing- keeps hitching his throat up, like something is stuck there?
Jake does this too. My girls don't. Must be a man thing. When I first put his food down, he won't touch it- then all of a sudden he goes for it, burying his face into his plate and getting food all over him.
Jake does this when he is very happy. Peaches does it occassionally. I don't believe it has anything to do with their sinuses. Jake's face is more extreme then Peaches'.He purrs but he trills at the same time? Is this just because of the shortened sinuses?
I don't notice my cats doing this. Unless they have the hiccups. Geez girl... you're very detail oriented! Good for you!I had him on my lap earlier, combing him. When he breathes, at the end of each breath his stomach does a sort of half-hitch, then he relaxes and breathes again- hitch- breathe- hitch
Can't help you with this either. I'm thinking it's a personal trait and not a breed trait since I've had 5 and none of them have done it! But that's just an educated guess. He grinds his teeth when he is upset. That is the only way to explain it. He works his mouth and the noise is kind of like a "whirrawhirrawhirrawhirrawhirra" Once we stop doing the unpleasant stuff- pill, ointment etc..he stops
I think I know what you're talking about here. Mine tend to get stuck in their fur when grooming. I think it's just because of all the long fur.He is dyslexic in grooming himself. He starts and his tongue gets caught in his hair and he has to pull his head up high to extracate himself?
Well, he should have all the normal parts but unfortunately he has the extreme face like my Jakey. So everything just gets squished. They are more prone to congestion and allergies (or it's just more noticable.) My guess is that if you try giving him some chlortrimetron it will help this greatly. I don't have to give it to Jake all the time. Just occassionally and then it seems to clear up. Hope this helps!I feel so sorry for him- I know part of the problem is he just doesn't have the normal breathing tube that he should.
LOL, MA, they can be quite good at that! My mom has a flame just like my Yum-Yum, he has to have daily meds, he's really, really good at not taking them sometimes, as mom says, about the time she thinks she's got him where he'll take them w/o any trouble, he starts with a new tactic for not doing it! I pilled him one day, got it down him, no trouble, turned my back to walk away and heard him spit it out! %#^^&&% cats! LOLOriginally Posted by hissy

He doesn't like his face messed with. He is getting savvy on how NOT to take his pills. He distrusts dogs and other cats, and he has the funniest growl I have ever heard. It sounds like your barefeet scraping over gravel. He is a definite love and is getting some of his much needed body weight back. Slowly and steadily we will win this race!
Mary Anne, you are just finding out what all of us Persian owners have known for years! Just throw all those myths and rumors out the window! Anyone who says a persian is grumpy, has never known one!Originally Posted by hissy
He's blowing all the myths I have ever heard about Pesians. I heard they love to lay on soft beds, he ditches the cat hammock, the pillows, the couch, the chair to lay on the hard table or the computer mouse and keyboard. I heard they were grumpy- he is the most loveable, playful fella.
