Rigel, I hope you, Gema, and Milky are safe! I'm looking forward to reading your posts and hearing that everything is fine
We're all thinking of you.
I'm guessing that (since Merida was at that point about 50 miles ssw of the eye) that Rigel had to deal with winds of around 90+mph. Still bad, but not as bad as it could have been.Category Two Hurricane:
Winds 96-110 mph (83-95 kt or 154-177 km/hr). Storm surge generally 6-8 feet above normal. Some roofing material, door, and window damage of buildings. Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees with some trees blown down. Considerable damage to mobile homes, poorly constructed signs, and piers. Coastal and low-lying escape routes flood 2-4 hours before arrival of the hurricane center. Small craft in unprotected anchorages break moorings. Hurricane Bonnie of 1998 was a Category Two hurricane when it hit the North Carolina coast, while Hurricane Georges of 1998 was a Category Two Hurricane when it hit the Florida Keys and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
You and me both. I've been watching the the reports on TV as the storm gets closer and closer to Merida! Hope everything is going well Rigel!Originally Posted by ugaimes
Rigel, I couldn't get you and Gema and Milky out of my head for the past 3 days. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, my friend.
Assuming one lives in a concrete building (As are most modern buildings in caribbean cities), in a place where you don't get any flooding, (MÃ[emoji]169[/emoji]rida is far inland) and knows the matter of hurricanes (as anyone born and bred in the tropics does), he will be safe. My main worry is the electricity... my experience of Hurricane Georges in 1998 was of three weeks without electricity and two weeks without water, which means it might be a while before he can contact us again.Originally Posted by RoseHawke
