I got a cat in 2001, and in 2002 I decided to get her a companion because I was going to be at college all day for awhile.
They bonded after three days, and the new kitten became the alpha, and the one year old mothered her and bathed her.
The first kitty got a fast-moving cancer in her intestines, and had to be put down just four days after it was discovered about a week ago.
Now, the younger one seems to be in mourning, but I'm not sure because she has failing kidneys and I read that this health issue can either look like dementia or cause it (I can't recall which).
Her behavior is to sit in corners under furniture, and stare at the wall in the middle of the night. Last night I saw her in attack mode (hair on entire body bushed up, but especially along the spine and tail. She was staring this way at me as I slept.
I'm just wondering if these behaviors sound more like grief or dementia. She's looked like she may have either dementia or vision problems for awhile (if I move my hand at night in the dark she often doesn't seem to recognize what it is).
Thank you.
