Diatomaceous earth will kill any insect so it's not an issue as to what type they are. DE is made of ground diatoms (microscopic sea crustaceans). there are two kinds - industrial and human/food grade. It is important that you get the human/food grade. I got mine at our local garden centre and it isn't labelled as DE. It says CHEMFREE on the container and lower in the text it says it is DE. You will need to ask the staff/owner. Make sure they know what you are asking for and the reason so that they give you the right stuff.
DE pierces the exoskeleton of the insect and it suffocates. DE is safe for mammals although it can cause irritation to the lungs if the dust is inhaled. If ingested by mammals, (us or our cats) all it will do is kill any internal parasites we may have which isn't a bad thing at all.
