Cat hasn't given birth in one hour intervals. Kinda freaking out.

My cat gave birth to a kitten not too long ago but unfortunately it died and there was nothing we could do. It's been around an hour now and she hasn't started giving birth to other kittens. She seems a little bit tired and is laying down away from where she originally gave birth. She's around two years old and this is her first litter. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Little bit of an update:

She's been licking her vulva still and she seems reluctant to go back to her small nest where she originally gave birth. She still hasn't given birth to any other kittens.

Set up a new nest for her. She may not want to be in the nest thst smells like the baby that passed.

She may have another kitten now, or several hours from now, or in a day or two. As long as she is not in distress, or pushing for an hour with no success, she should be fine.

I'm sorry the first baby didn't make it. Do you know what was wrong?

Keep us posted!

Thank you for the response.

We don't have space for a new nest, but we did clean up her nest so it's not messy or smelly anymore. Right now she's back at her nest, but I had to escort her there just so that she wouldn't give birth at some other place.

She doesn't look like she's in distress, or has been trying to push. Pretty much for the entire hour interval she was just sleeping next to me. If anything she just looks tired.

I don't know what happened that caused the first kitten to die unfortunately. This is my first experience dealing with a pregnant cat, hence my anxiety :eek:

Update (sorry for double posting)

She still hasn't given birth to anymore kittens. As said earlier she doesn't seem distressed or in pain at all and is just resting. I haven't seen her attempting to push at all but rather just sleeping. I'm still worried.

I know that you are worried, but try to relax tonight. It's good your cat is resting. Are you sure she has more kittens?

She just gave birth, but the second kitten died. I don't understand if she's doing something wrong or if we're just unlucky. It seems that after she gives birth she's not licking or cleaning her babies.

Open the sac, pinch off the cord, and rub the baby vigorously with a towel to warm it and try to get it breathing!

You need to help her get the kittens going if she's not doing it.

She already did both upon giving birth.

@sarthur2

We did have to guide her in doing it though. At first she tried leaving when she first gave birth but we made sure she went back to clean the sac.

And did the kitten mew or move at all? Was it alive at all? Does it appear fully developed?

It didn't look like it. The kitten did not move at all.

How long did it take mom to do all that?

Can you post a picture of the kitten please? I'm wondering if it was premature.

@sarthur2

She gave birth pretty fast. As I said before though we had to guide her back to her kitten so that she could clean up the sac because she was walking away from it for some reason.

Here's a picture of the kitten

The kitten appears full term. If she has another one, do the job for her. Open the sac, pinch the cord, and rub the kitten to get it breathing. Don't wait for mom.

Do you think she has more kittens to birth?

There could also be something genetically wrong with the kittens. It's so hard to know.

I'm sorry this is not going well. It's sad the kittens have not made it. I hope things get better for you. I'm sure it's been very stressful. Please let us know if she has more.

Also, mom may have walked away from the babies because she sensed that there was something wrong with them. Mom cats will do that. I'm so sorry.

That's what I would've thought. Something weird was going on because she walked away from both kittens after giving birth to them.
